1 Overview
The RMS is a set of applications designed to assist service providers in provisioning,
monitoring and maintaining large-scale WiMAX networks. The RMS provides
comprehensive element management capabilities for Redline's RedMAX family of
products, including WiMAX Forum Certified™ base stations and subscribers.
The RMS uses a Java-based interface and requires some minor changes in the methods
used to select menu items (compared to standard HTML web-based applications or
Windows™ system applications). These differences are highlighted in the following
sections.
This document describes how to use the RMS to manage RedMAX network elements.
Pre-requisite knowledge requires in-depth understanding of internetworking, VLANs,
and SNMP. The user should also have a comprehensive understanding of configuration
and operation of RedMAX broadband fixed wireless access products as part of a
WiMAX network. Additional background knowledge should include operating systems
and basic computing.
Features
The RMS is a high performance scalable platform implemented using an SQL database. Multiple
operators, at separate locations and having various roles and access rights, can use a secure web
browser interface to manage a WiMAX broadband wireless access (BWA) subnet.
The RMS collects and stores statistical information for the RedMAX products and this data is
made available to other platforms. The inventory, statistical, and event information saved in the
SQL database is available to external management platforms for automation of system and
service provisioning, inventory, and maintenance functions.
The RMS supports the following functions:
- Full 802-16-2004 service flow provisioning.
- Web-based User Interface:
The RMS client is a web browser (Internet Explorer 6 or higher) used with the Virtual Java
Machine (JS2E Runtime Environment) allows administrators to access the RMS system from
local or remote locations.
- Extensive Automation Features:
Automated network element discovery with defined scope and interval. Discovery includes
full inventory for installed hardware modules, options, hardware versions, and software
versions. Integration with external managers in the OSS architecture. Scheduling and
scripting features for automation of repetitive tasks. Policies for software upgrade include
batch mode and scheduled operations.
- Alarms and Events:
Alarm filtering, suppression, and forwarding with full event details logged in the SQL
database. Alarm summary available in Fault Browser (based upon ITU-T X.733). Poll for

2 User Interface
2.1 Login
The RMS interface uses a common HTTP-based web browser application (Netscape or
Internet Explorer 6 or higher). Access to the RMS from a local or remote location
requires a compatible browser and a Virtual Java Machine installed on the host computer.
Each administrator and operator must have a valid account to access the RMS system. To
login, you must enter your username and password. Security is provided through
authentication and password encryption. Use the following steps to login to the system:
1. Start the Web browser application and enter the URL of the RMS system in the
address bar (i.e., http://192.168.25.100:8080/RedMAXEMS/). The browser will
display the login dialog:
Topology Use the topology tree to view discovered network elements, and to
Tree perform operations on a single node or groups of nodes.
On-line Help Each RMS screen includes context-sensitive help for the displayed
screen. Point the cursor to the '?' character in the upper-right portion
of the screen to display the help screen.
3. Click Search to begin the search. The results of the search are displayed on the main
portion of the screen. Click Cancel to stop the search and hide the search dialog.
Note: If the search does not locate any matching elements, the default NE view is
displayed (all network elements).
Search Results
Network Element Name: User-entered name for the NE.
Connection State: Status of the NE.
connected: NE is available online.
disconnected: NE is not responding.
Ip: Network IP address of the NE.

2.5.3 Logical Topology Nodes
Logical nodes can be added to the topology tree. Use the editing features to create new
nodes and copy & paste discovered nodes to create specific views of the network. Select
the node to be the parent of the new logical node and use one of the following editing
menu functions:
Cut: Copy selected node(s) to clipboard and delete item from topology tree.
Copy: Copy selected node(s) to clipboard.
Paste: Paste the clipboard contents to topology tree (under the currently selected node).
Delete: Delete the selected node(s) from the topology tree.
2.5.4 Delete Node
All nodes (except Root) can be deleted from the topology tree. Select the node to be
deleted, then right-click and choose Delete. The deletion confirmation screen is displayed.
Click Confirm to delete the node. All nodes located under this node (children) will also
be deleted.

3 User Administration
To access the RMS, you must have a valid user account. Each user account has a
password and at least one associated role. The role includes all security permissions for
that role type.
Note: When creating a new user account, you must select from the list of existing roles.
The RMS is provided with default role definitions that may be modified for the
deployment. You may wish to modify the default role definitions or create new roles
before assigning user accounts.
3.2 Roles
To modify roles, choose Security->Roles. All access permissions are based on role
definitions. The system administrator can create, modify, and delete roles. Each role
definition includes permissions to access resources and processes. Specific commands
and views can be added or removed from their role to match user requirements. User
permissions include the highest access level for each resource, across all assigned roles.

4 Discovery & Alarm Settings
4.1 Discovery Settings
The discovery process detects RedMAX wireless network elements based on the user-
specified search criteria. New network elements are identified and inventory information
is captured for installed hardware, software, and portions of the device configuration.
Additional settings are available for scheduling re-discovery of discovered networks.
Important: Each discovered NE is configured to forward SNMP trap messages to the
RMS (IP and port specified during RMS installation).
4.1.1 Discover a Network Segment
Choose Config->Discovery to view and modify existing discovery settings. The operator
can control the discovery process by specifying the parameters used when discovering
network elements.
Select the Discover a Network Element tab to display configuration settings for
discovering NEs on a network segment.

Important: If the restore operation was successful, and the destination was the Active
memory bank, the base station is automatically rebooted. When the base station is
rebooted, all traffic stops for about 30 seconds and then resumes as the subscribers are
registered.

Create Service Class Bundles
The RMS supports pre-provisioning of service class templates and service flow
definitions that can be saved in the RMS database. These saved service classes and
service flows can be associated in logical groups (bundles) and downloaded to a single
network element or selected groups of network elements. Classifier settings can not be
pre-provisioned.
Individual service class templates can not be downloaded to an NE. Service class
definitions must be grouped together in service class bundles. Use the following steps to
create or edit service class bundles:
The create and add functions use the same screen.
1. Click menu item Provisioning->Service Class Bundle. In the Service Class Bundles
screen click Add new bundle .

Add Service Flows to Bundle
Service flows can only be created as part of a service flow bundle. To add a new service
flow, you must be viewing the existing service flow bundles. The general procedure is to
create a new bundle and then add service flow templates to the bundle.
1. Locate the service class bundle in the table and left-click to select the bundle. The
lower table is updated to list all service class templates in the selected bundle. Left-
click to select one or more service class definitions.
2. Select the required settings for the new service flow(s) to be added to the bundle
(name, description, direction, and classifier type).
3. Click Add to add new service flow definitions to the selected bundles. Separate
service flow definitions are created for each selected service class. If the service flow
direction field is set to 'both' service flow definitions are created for the upstream and
downstream.
4. Click Done to save the current settings and exit this screen.
