1 Overview
The RMS is a set of applications designed to assist service providers in provisioning,
monitoring and maintaining large-scale WiMAX networks. The RMS provides
comprehensive element management capabilities for Redline's RedMAX family of
products, including WiMAX Forum Certified™ base stations and subscribers.
The RMS uses a Java-based interface and requires some minor changes in the methods
used to select menu items (compared to standard HTML web-based applications or
Windows™ system applications). These differences are highlighted in the following
sections.
This document describes how to use the RMS to manage RedMAX network elements.
Pre-requisite knowledge requires in-depth understanding of internetworking, VLANs,
and SNMP. The user should also have a comprehensive understanding of configuration
and operation of RedMAX broadband fixed wireless access products as part of a
WiMAX network. Additional background knowledge should include operating systems
and basic computing.
Features
The RMS is a high performance scalable platform implemented using an SQL database. Multiple
operators, at separate locations and having various roles and access rights, can use a secure web
browser interface to manage a WiMAX broadband wireless access (BWA) subnet.
The RMS collects and stores statistical information for the RedMAX products and this data is
made available to other platforms. The inventory, statistical, and event information saved in the
SQL database is available to external management platforms for automation of system and
service provisioning, inventory, and maintenance functions.
The RMS supports the following functions:
- Full 802-16-2004 service flow provisioning.
- Web-based User Interface:
The RMS client is a web browser (Internet Explorer 6 or higher) used with the Virtual Java
Machine (JS2E Runtime Environment) allows administrators to access the RMS system from
local or remote locations.
- Extensive Automation Features:
Automated network element discovery with defined scope and interval. Discovery includes
full inventory for installed hardware modules, options, hardware versions, and software
versions. Integration with external managers in the OSS architecture. Scheduling and
scripting features for automation of repetitive tasks. Policies for software upgrade include
batch mode and scheduled operations.
- Alarms and Events:
Alarm filtering, suppression, and forwarding with full event details logged in the SQL
database. Alarm summary available in Fault Browser (based upon ITU-T X.733). Poll for

node status using SNMP with periodic inspection of network element event log (for events
not covered by traps).
- Multi-level security management with audit trail:
Supports VLAN tagged management traffic to RedMAX network elements, isolating
management traffic from user data traffic. Standard SNMP V3 security with encryption for
the user name and password. The system is protected against incorrectly formatted HTTP
messages. Uses standard Intel/PC server equipment that can be adapted for use with any
physical security options available for that platform.
- Open J2EE architecture supporting integration with OSS/BSS system via North Bound™
Interface (NBI):
Supports seamless end-to-end centralized management through Northbound interfaces to
external Manger of Managers (MoM) Network management Systems (NMS) and to
Operational Support Systems (OSS) systems. TMF-814 interface supports full security and
permits automated interaction for node and service provisioning, statistics collection for
billing, and alarm event detail collection for maintenance, repair, and inventory management.
- Localization
The language option provides localization for system information and presentation.
- Inventory Management
The RMS maintains a detailed inventory of discovered RedMAX devices. Collected
information includes firmware level for base and optional hardware, software version,
installed option keys, and the MAC address.

5.2 NE Software Management
5.2.1 Schedule NE Software Upgrades
The RMS provides complete management capabilities for revision control of software on
RedMAX network elements. The RMS can query the entire network or a subset of the
network to determine the current software version of network elements. Downloads of
new software can be directed to a single network element or to a group network elements.
Upgrades can be performed on-demand, or scheduled for a specified date and time.
Multiple schedules can be created to accommodate network service schedules. After the
schedule has been completed, the model (future upgrades only) can be reviewed and
changed using main menu item Admin->Upgrade.
Each RedMAX network element has two onboard memory banks to store software binary
images. Upgrade software can be loaded to the unused bank of an in-service unit without
any service impact. The upgraded bank can be tagged as the 'Active Bank' to be loaded
when the node is rebooted. The node restart required to activate the upgrade software can
be triggered remotely by the network engineer in real time or be scheduled for the next
service window. The earlier version of software remains on the node for version rollback
if required.

6.2 Using Service Classes and Bundles

Each service class definition is a set of QoS parameters that can be associated with a
service flow. Each service class definition includes traffic rates, latency and jitter
settings, priority, and transmission policy settings.
Multiple service class templates can be added to create a library of service classes. By
creating a set of standardized service classes, new service flows can be added that
conform to pre-defined service level agreements (SLAs).
Individual service class templates can not be downloaded to network elements -- only
service class bundles can be downloaded. You must create service class templates before
creating service class bundles.
Service classes are provisioned to network elements using the network topology tree on
the left-hand side of the RMS display. The following procedure must be followed to
select network elements and activate the provisioning menu.
1. Point and click on the '+' symbols to expand the network tree.
2. While depressing the CTRL key, left-click on the node to be provisioned. The
selected node is displayed in an alternate color. Release the CTRL key and left-click
on the selected node. This will confirm the selection and refresh the display.
3. Right-click on the selected node and point to Provisioning to display the service class
provisioning menu commands.

6.3 Using Service Flows and Bundles
Service flows provide the ability to set up data connections between the base station and
each subscriber station in a sector. Service flows determine the traffic flow direction, the
associated class of service, and the classification type.
Separate service flows are required for uplink and downlink traffic. Each service flow is
assigned a unique service level category and separate QoS settings based on the
associated service class. Service flows are associated in bundles and downloaded to a
base station.
To create service flow bundles you must first create a new (empty) service flow bundle
and then add service flow definitions (based on existing service classes).
Note: A service flow definition can not be edited after it has been created.
Service flows are provisioned to network elements using the network topology tree on the
left-hand side of the RMS display. The following procedure must be followed to select
network elements and activate the provisioning menu.
1. Point and click on the '+' symbols to expand the network tree.
2. While depressing the CTRL key, left-click on the node to be provisioned. The
selected node is displayed in an alternate color.
3. Release the CTRL key and left-click on the selected node. This will confirm the
selection and refresh the display.
4. Right-click on the selected node and point to Provisioning to display the service flow
provisioning menu commands.

6.4 Classifiers
Any active service flow must have at least one active classifier. The 802.16 Service Flow
can have multiple classifiers (classification rules). A unique set of classifier rules can be
defined from each service flow, depending on the classification type (i.e., Packet,
802.3/Ethernet) selected when the service flow is created. All associated classifiers are
deleted when the service flow is deleted.
When a service flow is activated, the classifiers become active by default. A service flow
can have both active and inactive classifiers only when the service flow is already active
and new classifiers are added. New classifiers become active only after they are
successfully implemented on both the base station and the subscriber station.
6.4.1 Provisioning Classifiers
Use the following steps to create a classifiers for a provisioned service flow:
If you are currently viewing the service flows screen (Provisioning->Service Flows) you
may left-click to select a service flow in the table and then right-click to choose Classifier.

8.4 Interfaces
8.4.1 HTTP RMS-to-Administrator
The network administrator can access the RMS server with a common HTTP-based web
browser application. This interface supports access to RMS for local and remote
managers, it supports strong encryption for security, and the RMS server requires strong
authentication for local and remote managers and for external managers.
8.4.2 SNMP RMS-to-RedMAX Node
The RMS system supports SNMP V2, generates SNMP V2 traps, and supports trap
filtering and trap forwarding over a Northbound SNMP gateway to NMS systems.
Redline RedMAX network elements interoperate with third party network management
systems supporting SNMP V2 and MIB II. Most statistics and configuration parameters
available through the Web interface are also accessible using SNMP.
8.4.3 TMF814 (CORBA) RMS-to-OSS
The RMS interface Northbound with a broad range of MoM NMS and OSS systems and
supports widely used interfaces such a SNMP, CORBA TMF814 to communicate to
other Management systems.
The RMS is compliant with all TMN specifications of Layered Network Management
Architecture (ITU M.3010):
- Client/Server Architecture
- Mediation Layers
- Currently operating at the element management layer.
The RMS and Redline network elements can be configured to selectively send SNMP
traps to a Northbound interface. SNMP traps can be initiated by external trap forwarding,
or generating Northbound SNMP traps based on an event or alarm condition. The
Northbound interface will send/receive:
- Network topology and node status
- Alarms and events for network level objects
- Service provisioning information
8.4.4 RedMAX Node Interfaces
The RedMAX network elements support management interfaces for local and remote
management access including: Telnet/CLI, HTTP, Console/CLI, and SNMP (see
following table).
