3G Nomenclature guidelines - NSN 3G-RAN-101110-2

25 1 Introduction

26 The purpose of this document is to define high level guidelines for the nomenclature to be
27 adopted in the 3G systems.

28 2 Scope
29 The document is more focused on the new nodes introduced in the network, primarily about
30 Node-B and RNC.

31 The document contains high level rules for the nomenclature; deviation from the above is
32 possible in some exceptional cases.

33 In some circle cases , due to a different methodology adopted in 2G network , some values
34 may not be available for use, In such cases appropriate non-conflicting values can be chosen by
35 IDEA circle team.

36 3 NSN RAN systems.

37 The naming conventions for the RNC , NodeB , Cell are described in the following sub-sections
38 including the guidelines for the LAC , SAC , RAC.

39 3.1 RNC name

nomenclature the same can be done too.

63 This field signifies the Cell id in the 3G systems.

3G Parameter
3G Param range
(Abbreviated name)

CELL ID 1 to 65535

64 It is recommended to have following methodology.

< SITE ID > < SECTOR ID >
The last digit will be replaced with
7,8,9 which will be used to identify 3G
This value should be same as the sector-1,2,3. This is to keep the
current 2G site id in use ( except differentiation between the 2G Cells &
the last digit) 3G cells .
For further sectors we use the value
of 6,5,4 for other sectors.

3G Nomenclature guidelines - NSN 3G-RAN-101110-2

65 In cases where the last digit of cell if 7,8,9 is already being used in such cases circle can choose
66 non-conflicting values available in the systems.
67 Following table identifies an example
CELL ID / SAC
< SITE ID > < SECTOR ID > CELL ID
3001 7 30017
3001 8 30018
3001 9 30019
3234 7 32347
3234 8 32348
3234 9 32349
68 Note : In certain special cases there may be more than three sectors possible in the cell , in such
69 cases we will may have to use different IDs for sector 4 , 5 and 6 of UMTS.

70 3.7 LAC Provisioning

71 It is recommended to have separate LAC for 3G systems than 2G systems. This will assist in
72 avoiding excessive paging load.
73 It is recommended to have very few LACs , in order to avoid un-necessary LAU between 3G
74 zones.
75 This field signifies the 3G Cell id in the 3G systems.

3G Parameter
3G Param range
(Abbreviated name)

LAC ID 0 to 65535

76 It is recommended to have following methodology.

<3G Identifier> <CIRCLE ID> <RNC Instance> <LAC ID>
As mentioned in the 01 for a RNC
rncname. instance
This will should be set 1 for 1st LAC within
For UPW , HAR – two For UPW , HAR –
to 3 to signify 3G the RNC
digit value of 10 & 11 one digit value of
will be used. will be used.
77 Please take note of the special case scenario for UPW & HAR because of two digit circle code in
78 use. It is expected that number of RNC in these circles will be less than 9. However in cases
79 where more RNC are required then we change the <3G Identifier> field to value of 4,5 and so
80 on.
81 Thus based on the above nomenclatures there can be max 9 (or 10) LACs within a
82 nomenclature. It is expected that there will be less LACs in an RNC than this. If more are
83 required than we can follow the below mentioned method of LAC already is use.

IDEA Confidential & Proprietary Page 7

3G Nomenclature guidelines - NSN 3G-RAN-101110-2

84 However if for some reasons say LAC ID is already in being used in the 2G systems, we can have
85 different value for field <3G identifier> to another value say 4 or 5.
86 Following table identifies an example
<RNC Final LAC
<3G Identifier> <CIRCLE ID> <LAC ID>
Instance> ID
3 8 01 1 38011
3 10 1 1 31011
3 11 1 1 31111

87 3.8 SAC Provisioning

88 It is recommended to have SAC (Service area code ) to be same as cell ID. This is to allow for the
89 visibility of cell id level at the Core network.

90 3.9 RAC Provisioning

91 It is mandatory to have at least one RAC (Routing area code) per LAC. However it certain cases
92 more than one RAC may be required..

3G Parameter
3G Param range
(Abbreviated name)

RAC ID 0 to 255

93 It is recommended to have following methodology.

<RAC ID>
