Year 2 Class Bulletin
Term 3
Phonics and Spellings
Phonics groups have been shuffled around
a bit again as we have more teachers
available. This means that the groups are
a bit smaller which is great. Please keep
up the good work with supporting your
children with learning the sounds and their
spellings! Spelling test – Fridays.
PSHCE
This will be taught by Mrs Turner. We will
be focusing on ‘Going for Goals’ this term.
As a key part of this we will be learning
about and discussing motivation and self-
motivation.
R.E. – Jesus The Teacher
R.E. will also be taught by Mrs Turner on
Wednesday. Children will learn about what
and how Jesus taught people and discuss
the qualities of Jesus as a teacher.
P.E.
Outdoor – We will continue with the
Games Unit. Children will learn to travel
with, send and receive a ball and other
equipment in different ways. Children will
have the opportunity to play a variety of
multi-skill games to develop chasing,
pushing and pulling actions, rolling and
working with and against a partner.
Indoor – Dance We are very lucky this
term because a professional dancer will be
teaching the children!

Literacy
In Literacy we are continuing to work on
story settings linked with our topics and
with the Enchanted Wood. We will focus on
story writing during Writing Week and
following that we will move onto learning
about explanation texts. The explanation
texts will be based on science and DT
activities linked to the Light it Up and
Rhythm and Beats topics. Mrs Turner with
be exploring different stories by the same
author this term and has chosen to do
stories written by Julia Donaldson.
Numeracy
We have made a good start with the Maths
Makes Sense scheme. There is lots of new
vocabulary to learn and the children have
picked it up very well. Last term we did a
mixture of Maths Make Sense and the
Numeracy Framework as we were
introducing it. This term we will mainly be
following the Maths Makes Sense scheme
which means that each week children
undertake lessons on Arithmetic, Geometry,
Data and Measure as well as Reasoning.
Please can I ask you to continue working on
number facts and times tables with your
children at home. This term I am also going
to introduce a weekly times table challenge
to help children remember them.
Topic – Rhythm and Beats!
In this topic we will explore sound and
hearing. We will learn about how sound
travels, how the ear works, different music
from around the world, maps and different
countries. The children will also design and
make their own musical instruments! To
finish off the unit we might try to create a
performance with our instruments.
If you have any instruments from different
parts of the world and would like to share
them with the class, you would be very
welcome!
