Course Description: MAT 191, Calculus I, covers Chapters 1-5 from the textbook: Differential
and integral calculus of one variable: limits, continuity, derivatives and application of
derivatives, integrals, Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, inverse functions.

Prerequisites: MAT 153 or equivalent with a grade of "C" or better.

Textbook: Essential Calculus (1st edition), by James Stewart

ISBN # 0-495-01442-7

Objectives

After completing MAT 191 the student should be able to:

• Understand the four basic concepts of one-variable calculus; the limit, the concept of
continuity, the derivative and the integral of a function of one variable
• Use the rules of differentiation to compute derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric
functions
• Use derivatives to solve problems involving rates of change, tangent lines, velocity
(speed), acceleration, optimization, and related rates.
• Investigate the graph of a function with the aid of its first and second derivatives:
asymptotes, continuity, tangency, monotonicity, concavity, extrema, inflection points,
etc.
• Understand the meanings of indefinite integral and the definite integral of a function of
one variable, and their relationship to the derivative of a function via the Fundamental
Theorem of Calculus
• Use rules of integration including the Substitution Rule to evaluate indefinite and definite
integrals
• Differentiate Exponential, Logarithmic, and Inverse Trigonometric Functions
• Use l'Hospital's Rule

Points Scale

Exams (3) - 300 points

Quizzes (9) - 100 points
Homework - 80 points
Attendance - 30 points
Final Exam - 190 points
Total – 700 points

Grading Scale

A: 93-100% (650 - 700 pts) C+: 75-79% (525 – 559 pts)

A-: 90-92% (630 – 649 pts) C: 70-74% (490 – 524 pts)
B+: 87-89% (610 – 629 pts) C-: 65-69% (455 – 489 pts)
B: 83-86% (580 – 609 pts) D: 50-64% (350 – 454 pts)
B-: 80-82% (560 – 579 pts) F: 0-49% (0 - 349 pts)

Calculating your Grade: After every exam, you will receive your progress in the class. But
calculating your grade on your own is a very simple process. You take the number of points you
have and divide it by the number of points that are possible in the class. For example, if you have
85 points and there are 100 points possible, then:

85
= .85 = 85% which comes out to a B.
100

Homework Policy: Homework will be collected 4 times, on the days of the three exams and
final exam and each homework is worth 20 points. Student is expected to show their work on
each homework problem. In order to receive full credit in the homework, you must have
attempted all homework assigned. (Note: No late homework will be accepted!)

WebWorK: The website for WebWork is math.csudh.edu/webwork2. There will be 3

WebWork assignments. Each of the assignments will be due by 6 pm on the days of the three
exams. Completing Webwork assignments will award you 10 bonus points on each exam.
Make-up Exams/Quizzes: No makeup examinations or quizzes will be given. If you must miss
an examination for a legitimate and convincing reason, you must discuss this issue in advance
with me and I will then substitute the relevant score from your final exam for the missing exam
grade.

Calculator Use: Any type of calculators are acceptable and recommended in this class but not
required. The use of graphing calculators will be helpful in this class but not required. The use of
cell phone calculators during an examination is strictly prohibited.

Blackboard: All documents such as this syllabus, quizzes, practice exams, etc, will be posted via
blackboard under course documents. Please check blackboard often for announcements and/or
new documents.

Drop Deadline: The last day to drop any class without a “W” on your record is September 17.
The last day to drop with a “W” on record is November 19 and you must have a serious and
compelling reason.

Academic Integrity: The mathematics department does not tolerate cheating. Students who have
questions or concerns about academic integrity should ask their professors or the counselors in
the Student Development Office, or refer to the University Catalog for more information. (Look
in the index under "academic integrity".)

Accomodations for Students with Disabilities: Cal State Dominguez Hills adheres to all
applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing
reasonable accommodations for students with temporary and permanent disabilities. If you have
a disability that may adversely affect your work in this class, I encourage you to register with
Disabled Student Services (DSS) and to talk with me about how I can best help you. All
disclosures of disabilities will be kept strictly confidential. Please note: no accommodation may
be made until you register with the DSS in WH B250. For information call (310) 243-3660 or to
