PURIFICADOR DE AGUA

-WATER TREATMENT PLANT

“Water water everywhere nor any drop to drink” wrote Samuel Taylor Coleridge in
his poem, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”. This line is almost prophetical
considering the current state of the world’s water resources. The contamination of
water is a chief iniquity against which future generations will continue to wage wars
with. Thus arises the need for an event which launches this war. Apart from
attempting to combat this crisis, this event focuses on another problem, trash
accumulation. The participants are expected to use scrap to purify water, thus
fighting both water contamination and trash accumulation. The event also tests the
business talents of the participants, making this an amalgamation of both
engineering and management.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
The participants have to design a water treatment plant using only junk materials, in a way
to maximize its water treatment capabilities and still be flexible enough to accommodate
changes needed in it to tackle the surprise special impurities given to the team on the spot
(decided based on the performance in the business event to be conducted on the spot.)
Integration of a small electricity generation unit will fetch extra points.
The water treatment plant can be constructed before hand and re-assembled during the
event in the given arena.

EVENT FORMAT:
The participants will have to go through two rounds. The rounds are framed such that the
performance in the first gives an edge for the second.

ROUND ONE:
1. Certain items will be given to each team to be marketed and sold in any manner of
their choice. The money made will be converted into virtual money suitably to be
used for bidding in round two.
2. The teams will be ranked based on the profits made. (In the case of same profit
margin by two teams, the method used to get the profit will be considered.)
ROUND TWO:
1. The teams will now be shown a display of special impurities, labeled A, B, C and so
on. Each impurity will carry a certain amount of points based on the challenges that
will be faced in removing it.
2. The teams can choose their special impurity in the same order as that of the ranking
after the first round.
3. Each team will be provided with the same quantity of standard contaminated water,
containing the impurities mentioned in the problem statement. In addition to this
the special impurity picked will be given.
4. The bidding round starts now. Here, the participants are given an opportunity to use
the virtual money they have to buy a few constraints to ease the task at hand.
5. Now the teams are allowed to work on their water treatment plant. The treatment
of the water should also include the treatment of the special impurity chosen in the
previous stage.
6. The constraints the teams can bid for are the following:
7. Extra time for finishing the construction of the water treatment plant. Here they can
either buy an extra 15, 20, or 30 minutes of time.
8. Name of the special impurity. The team which buys this will be given the name of
their unknown impurity.
9. Leakage. Points will not be deducted for any leakage in the process for the team
which buys this constraint.
10. Number of attempts to send the water through the plant. Here the teams can buy 1
more attempt.
11. Access to internet.
12. The teams can then work on their models. At the end of the time period, the sample
of water obtained from the respective water treatment plants will be tested for
purity and points will be awarded

RULES:

ROUND ONE:
1. A team cannot split up in the marketing process.
2. A volunteer will accompany each team to ensure that no form of cheating takes
place.
3. At the end of the round, each team will have to return a sum equal to the basic
M.R.P of the product or the product, if it’s unsold. The rest of the money made
should be exchanged for virtual money.
4.
5. The entire university campus can be used as a potential marke
6. The time limit for the first round is 1 hour.

ROUND TWO:
1. No us e of direct power supply or any other electrical equipment is allowed.
2. At least one of the water carrying containers should be made of paper.
3. Leakage of water at any point will lead to deduction of points.
4. The ability to generate enough current to light a small bulb at any stage will fetch
bonus points.
5. No direct human intervention is allowed after the water is fed into the water
treatment
6. Time to construct the plant: 3 hrs
7. Maximum number of attempts: 2
8. Maximum time for each attempt: 10 min.

TEAM SIZE:
A maximum of 5.

PARAMETERS OF JUDGEMENT:
1. Purity of water obtained. (Will be checked in lab)
2. Leakage of water at any point will lead to deduction of points.
3. The ability to generate enough current to light a small bulb at any stage
will fetch bonus points.
4. Creative and efficient use of material.

FAQ:
1.Are there any dimensional constraints for the construction of the water treatment
plant?
A: No. The plant can be of any convenient dimensions as per the team’s choice.
2.What happens with the virtual money left over after the bidding round?
A: The leftover virtual money is not taken into consideration of any kind. So, it is up to
the team’s discretion to utilize the money to its full potential.
3.In case of the same profit margin for two different teams, on what basis will one
team does edge over the other be decided?
A: As stated in the event format, the method of profit obtained will be considered.
Judges discretion will be final.
4.Will water sample be provided again in the case of a second attempt for water
purification?
A: Yes. In the case a team is going for a second attempt, water sample of the standard
quantity will be provided again.
5.Will an extra attempt be given to the team in the case of collapse or malfunctioning
of any part of the treatment plant?
A: No. In all cases a team will be given the benefit of only two attempts at water
treatment.
6.Is the quantity of water obtained as output after purification process taken into
consideration to calculate the score?
A: Yes. The quantity of purified water obtained is taken into consideration to calculate
the final score. Thus minimum water wastage should be aimed at during the process of
water treatment.
