Dear Listeners and Friends of India!
The regular transmission “Raga CDs of the Months” has been cancelled from
given reasons. Instead “IMC - India meets Classic” presents now “In
Memoriam… Mumbai, 11/26 - Ragas of Peace“. My name is ElJay Arem.
Background…
Mumbai, India’s financial and film capital was attacked from sea on 26th
November 2008 at 10 different places. The background of terror and reasons
behind are yet unclear. The attack on public places and battles up to 4 days till
the dissolution by Indian security, police and military forces entailed more than
170 victims and approx. 300 injured persons.
In Memoriam…
Concretely the editorship has 126 names (see enclosure, page 10) on the list
we will call out during this transmission in memoriam of the lost souls and
beloved ones.
Motive…
India has fallen far over the sub-continental borders into a deep mourning and
is continuously in kind of state of shock.
This crucial act has an outstanding meaning and impact onto the future of a
modern democratical India. Cultural values and traditions actually are of
inestimable importance for stabilisation and orientation.
Music as the universal language and as the creator, as it is understood in

Indian music system since for more than 2000 years shall speak to us today
as an expression of “The Common” - cross any community borders...

Sehr verehrte Zuhörerinnen und Zuhörer, liebe Indienfreunde!
aus gegebenem Anlass entfällt unsere reguläre Sendung „Raga CDs des
Monats“. Stattdessen präsentiert IMC – India meets Classic „In Memoriam...
Mumbai, 26ster November – Ragas des Friedens“. Mein Name ist Lothar J.R.
Maier.
Hintergrund...
Mumbai, die indische Finanz- und Filmmetropole fiel am 26. November 2008
einem Angriff von See aus zum Opfer. Der terroristische Hintergrund ist bis
zum Zeitpunkt dieser Sendung weitgehend ungeklärt.
Der Angriff auf öffentliche Räume an 10 verschiedenen Orten und einr

Belagerungszustand von 4 Tagen bis zur Auflösung durch die indischen
Sicherheits-, Polizei- und Militärkräfte hatte mehr als 170 Todesopfer und ca.
300 Verletzte zur Folge.
In Memoriam…
Uns liegen zum Redaktionsschluss konkret 126 Namen (siehe Anlage, S. 10)
vor, die wir in Gedenken dieses Ereignisses im Laufe der Sendung verlesen
werden.
Motiv...
Indien wurde weit über die Grenzen des Subkontinents in eine tiefe Trauer
gestürzt... und befindet sich anhaltend in einem Art Schockzustand.
Angesichts der herausragenden Bedeutung dieses Ereignisses für die Zukunft

eines modernen, demokratischen Indiens sind kulturelle Werte und
Traditionen zur Orientierung haltgebend und von unschätzbarem Wert.
Musik als universelle Sprache und Schöpfungskraft, wie sie in dem indischen
Musiksystem seit mehr als 2000 Jahren verstanden wird, soll heute zu uns
sprechen - als Ausdruck des „Gemeinsamen“ - über alle Grenzen hinweg.

1.2 Raga Playlist...
In Indian Classical music Ragas are classified for a 24 hours time cycle of day
and night time… Same for South Indian (Carnatic) and North Indian Classics
(Hindustani) exist nine (9) emotional pictures. Each Raga or Ragam mainly is
lead by one of these moods.
Shantam means peaceful, the most sought feeling a human mind is seeking
for and for long.
You will listen to six (6) peaceful Ragas…
 Raga Lalit, played by the sarangi maestro Abdul Latif Khan.

 The early morning raga Bhairavi presented by the flute player Ronu
Majumdar on the Bansuri, the Bamboo
 The South Indian Ragam Karaharaprya with U. Shrinivas from Chennai,
on the Mandoline…
 The late morning Raga Bilaval presented by the Khayal vocalist
Kishori Amonkar, a live recording form the NCPA in Mumbai,
 Raga Gauri, out of the Guru Granth, in the Sikh Tradition of North India,
sung by Dr. Gurnam Singh Jee of the Punjabi University in Patiala and…
 the Carnatic Ragam Abhogi. This late evening and midnight Raga was
presented at the Margazhi Mahotsavam Festival in 2006 (live recording of
Java TV ) by the vocalist S. Sowmaya.
Gitanjali – R. Tagore…
To comlete the aspect of peaceful music I like to present some verses out of
the Gitanjali with the genius and nobel prize winner for literature and peace
seeker Rabindranath Tagore.
Gitanjali means “an offering of songs” and is a collection of 103 poems, which
have been translated by Tagore into English out of some differerent of his
works.

1.2 Friedensragas - Playlist...
In der indischen Klassik werden Ragas nach einem 24-Stunden-Tageszyklus,

in Tages- und Nachtzeiten klassifiziert. Es existieren für die südindische
(karnatische) und nordindische Klassik (Hindustani) neun (9) Stimmungsbilder.
Jeder Raga oder Ragam wird dabei einer dominierenden Emotion zugeordnet.
So beispielsweise Shantam: friedvoll, die Sehnsucht des Menschen nach

dauerhaftem Frieden.
Im folgenden hören Sie sechs (6) Ragas des Friedens...
 Den friedvollen Raga Lalit, mit dem Sarangimeister Abdul Latif Khan,
 den Frühmorgenraga Bhairavi mit dem Flötisten Ronu Majumdar auf der

Literaturnobelpreisträgers und Friedensarbeiters Rabindranath Tagore.
Gitanjali bedeutet „Ein Angebot an Liedern“ („An offering of songs“), eine

Sammlung von 103 Gedichten, die von Tagore aus verschiedenen seiner
Werke in’s Englische übersetzt wurde.

Messengers, with tidings from unknown skies, greet me and speed along the road.
My heart is glad within, and the breath of the passing breeze is sweet.
From dawn till dusk I sit here before my door, and I know that of a sudden the happy
moment will arrive when I shall see.
In the meanwhile I smile and I sing all alone.
In the meanwhile the air is filling with the perfume of promise.

Dieses ist meine Freude, am Straßenrand so zu warten und zu beobachten,

wo der Schatten das Licht jagt und der Regen unmittelbar nach dem Sommer kommt.
Boten, mit Neuigkeiten von unbekannten Himmeln, grüßen mich und
beschleunigen ihren Weg entlang die Straße.
Mein Herz ist innen froh, und der Atem der vorüberstreichenden Brise ist süß.
Von der Dämmerung bis Dämmerung sitze ich hier vor meiner Türe,
und plötzlich weiß ich, dass der glückliche Moment ankommen wird, wenn ich ihn erkenne.
Zwischenzeitlich lächele ich und ich singe ganz alleine.
Zwischenzeitlich füllt sich die Luft mit dem Duft der Versprechung.

Thou art the sky and thou art the nest as well.
O thou beautiful, there in the nest is thy love that encloses the soul with colours and
sounds and odours.
There comes the morning with the golden basket in her right hand bearing the wreath
of beauty, silently to crown the earth.
And there comes the evening over the lonely meadows deserted by herds, through
trackless paths, carrying cool draughts of peace in her golden pitcher from the
western ocean of rest.
But there, where spreads the infinite sky for the soul to take her flight in, reigns the
stainless white radiance. There is no day nor night, nor form nor colour, and never,
never a word.

Du gestaltest den Himmel... und Du gestaltest das Nest gleichermassen.

Oh Du Schöne, dort ist das Nest, Deine Liebe, die die Seele mit Farben und Tönen
und Gerüchen einschließt.
Dort kommt der Morgen mit dem goldenen Korb in ihrer rechten Hand, sie trägt den
Kranz der Schönheit, um still die Erde zu krönen.
Und dort kommt der Abend herein über die einsamen Wiesen, die durch Herden
bedeckt sind, auf spurlosen Wegen, und trägt einen kühlen Entwurf des Friedens in
ihrem goldenen Krug aus dem westlichen Ozean der Ruhe.
Aber dort, wo sich der unbegrenzte Himmel ausbreitet, damit die Seele ihren Flug
aufnimmt, regiert das rostfreie weiße Strahlen.
Es gibt weder Tag noch Nacht, noch Form, noch Farbe und nie, nie ein Wort.
