Challenge Series 1
Q.1 A sample of Helium gas is taken
through the process A B, shown in the
figure, p0 = 105 Pa, V0 = 3 dm3. Determine
the pressure and the volume of the gas at
state C, until which QAC = 3700 J heat is
added to the gas.

Q.2 Two balls are started at the same time, one

of them starts from rest at the top of the
inclined plane, the angle of inclination is ,
and the other is projected from point O, and
they reach point P at the same time. At what
angle does the second ball have to be
projected?

Q.3 Uniformly charged square-shaped sheets of sides a and of charge Q are used to build
a cube. What is the electrostatic repelling force exerted on each face of the cube?
Q.4 Metal pieces of wires, of resistance R
are used to build a cube system as shown
in the figure. The cubes make a long
chain, which can be considered infinite.
What is the equivalent resistance between
points A and B?

Q.5 In a thermally insulated container there was some water at a temperature of ,

then 1 kg ice at temperature was added. How much water was initially in the
container if

a) there was no phase change;

b) the total amount of ice is just sufficient to be melted;

c) the total amount of water froze?

Given sp heat of ice = 0.5 cal/g/C°, sp heat of water = 1.0 cal/g/C°, latent heat of fusion
of ice = 80 cal/g

Q.6 There are 2010 points on a giant circuit board. Each point is connected to each of the
other points by a wire with resistance R. Find the resistance r between any two points.

Q. 7 Two small spheres are attached to the
ends of a long light nonconducting rod. A third,
“middle” sphere can slide along the rod without
friction as shown. All three spheres are
nonconducting, have identical masses m, and a
positive charge q is distributed evenly on the surface of each sphere. The whole system is
placed on a horizontal frictionless nonconducting surface. Initially, all three spheres are at
rest and the “middle” sphere is located a distance 3d from one of the ends of the rod and a
distance d from the other. Find the maximum speed v of the “middle” sphere after the
system is released.

Q.8 A long thin uniform rod is placed on a horizontal

table. One end of the rod is pulled up slowly by a
force which remains perpendicular to the rod in the
vertical plane. If μ is the minimum coefficient of
friction required between the rod and table to prevent
slipping at the other end at any θ the rod makes with
horizontal, plot μ with θ. What is overall minimum μ
required to bring the rod vertical?

Q.9 A block is placed on a long and wide inclined plane that makes angle θ with
horizontal. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the incline is μk > tan
θ. The block is given a quick push. After some time it moves with speed v at an angle
with the line of greatest slope. Select correct statement in subsequent motion.
(A) The block will never stop.
(B) Just before the block will stop, its direction of motion is along line greatest slope.
(C) Just before the block will stop, its direction of motion need not be along the line of
greatest slope.
(D) Any conclusion depends on the magnitude of v.

Q.10 The U-shaped body of mass M shown in the

figure is at rest and lies on a smooth horizontal
surface (e.g. on ice). Its centre of mass is the
midpoint of the semicircle of radius R. The length
of the straight arms of the U is 2R. A small disc of
mass m slides tangentially to point A on one of the
arms, with a velocity of v.

a) Where will point A be when the disc is at point B on the other arm?

b) Draw the path of the two bodies.

c) Find the velocity versus time and acceleration versus time functions for both bodies.

(Friction and air drag are negligible everywhere. Data: M=m=1 kg, R=0.1 m, v=0.5 m/s.)
