Friends of the YMCA,
2008 and 2009 have been both rewarding and extremely challenging
years for our YMCA. On one hand, we saw the financial turn-around of the
Jersey Shore Branch due to the dedicated efforts of the staff and volunteers
working together. We also had the opening of the Eastern Lycoming Branch
YMCA in Muncy in July 2008. The EL YMCA has virtually “exploded”
in popularity and the community continues to support the EL Branch in ways
that we could not have anticipated in our wildest dreams.
On the other hand, like most other nonprofits in our community, the
economic downturn has had a negative effect on our organization. Program
and membership revenue have been down, donations have ebbed and grants
have seemingly dried up. In response, our YMCA has had to make difficult
changes and cutbacks in order to assure that we remain viable into the future.
All that being said, throughout all of 2008 and 2009, one thing
has remained constant: the YMCA’s service to our community. By the end
of 2008, the four branches of the Association together provided well over
$300,000 in Y-scholarships to local children and families to ensure that no
one was turned away from YMCA programs/services due to an inability to
pay. The vast majority of this assistance was granted to families needing
preschool and after-school childcare in order to remain gainfully employed.
If there is ever any doubt that the YMCA remains relevant, these
harsh economic times have proven that our community needs a YMCA
now more than ever. In 2009, we fully expect our Y-scholarships to exceed
$400,000.
We would like to thank all of the members, program participants,
volunteers, and donors who have never stopped believing in the YMCA
Mission “to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build
a strong Spirit, Mind and Body.” With your help and God’s blessing, our
YMCA will continue to quietly, persistently make a huge difference in the
lives of many of our neighbors and friends.
