RESEARCH
with Aluminium Alloy Substrate
The corrosion behaviour of MMCs with aluminium alloy matrix was presented. The corrosion
characteristics of boron-, graphite-, silicon carbide-, alumina- and mica- reinforced aluminium
MMCs were reviewed. The reinforcing phase influence on MMCs corrosion rate as well as on
various corrosion forms (galvanic, pitting, stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatique,
tribocorrosion) was discussed. Some corrosion protection methods of aluminium based MMCs
were described.
Graphite/aluminium MMCs with continuous Experimental results have generally indicated that
fiber graphite are known to have high specific the corrosion rate of particulate and whisker SiC/Al
tensile strength and stiffness in the direction of the MMCs is higher than the corrosion rate of
fiber axis. High thermal conductivity, negative monolithic-matrix alloy [11,12] and increases with
coefficient of thermal expansion and high stiffness SiC content in aerated chloride containing
