The girl??? That’s my daughter Shy Ann.
In the middle - “Heather” on my 2000 Dyna Wide Glide.
Bought 6 years ago from Roanoke Harley-Davidson in Roanoke, VA. To my knowledge, the previous owner had most of
the add on accessories put on. The bike had over 50,000 miles on the chassis, but recently had the Big Bore 1550 Kit put
on it and had around 2,500 miles on the engine. All the add ons are Harley and the work was all done by the Harley shop.
Since buying the bike, I’ve totally ran the hell out of it. I’ve had to replace 7 rear drive belts and an unknown number of
rear tires. I’ve taken the narrow belt kit off the rear and put the wider belt on it from a 99 Wide Glide. I’ve had the tranny
rebuilt and put on Python Exhaust. Last summer one of the 3 main bolts holding the Hyper-Charger on, worked loose and
it was sucked in through the intake, passed the valve and was broken in half by the piston, slamming it against the bottom
of the head. It split the piston in half, embedded one half of the bolt into the top of the piston and the other half into the
bottom of the head…what a mess. I found a set of jugs and heads at Greenville Chopper Works in Greenville, VA. Had
the jugs bored out at Edwards Cycles Service in Fincastle, VA., and Allan Brown at V-TWIN Solutions has been putting it
all back together for me for the past couple of years. My buddies, “Big Un” (Dwayne) and “Junior”, had previously been
doing the wrenching for me out of “Juniors” back yard garage and out of the former Greenbrier Valley Cycle Center in
Lewisburg, WV…it’s my main ride and generally goes through 5 or 6 rear tires a summer. I can ride a wheelie on it quite
some ways too. The girl?? That’s my daughter’s buddy, Heather.

Over Bore on the cylinders done by Edwards Cycle Service and new pistons/rings installed by “Junior” in his backyard ga-
rage in WV. I’ve replaced the kicker shaft and gears, kick arm assembly, ratchet gears, bushings, carb, handlebars, and a
few other changes. Bought the bike from my buddy Tony “Easy Rider” Markland several years ago. I couldn’t afford to pay
for it all at once, so he let me make payments on it and kept it in his basement till I got it paid for. It needs some cosmetic
work, a few bugs worked out, but it’s a hell of a switch after riding the other bikes and the getting on it – with the opposite
side shifter and foot brake, we run into a lot of things with it – buildings, cars, wood piles, etc…The girl?? That’s Amber –
She’s my daughter’s buddy and my son’s girlfriend (sometimes).

All in all I really enjoy my bikes and the friendships that have come
to be, mainly from riding. I have been putting on annual poker runs
for the past 9 years here in my area. This year, the ride will be June
4th on behalf of 2 year old Evan Groves who has Epidermolysis
Bullosa. The ride will be held at Kountry Korners Store, 5409 Potts

In today’s overwhelmingly busy society, with ever increas-
ing demands on our personal and professional time, learn-
ing to juggle multiple tasks at once is something we all must
face on a daily basis. While it is not clear whether or not
multitasking is effective or if it costs more time than it saves,
multi-tasking while driving has sparked a national debate
about distracted driving and the latest statistics prove that
not focusing on the road can be deadly.
One of the most widespread forms of distracted driving,
cell phone usage, has some alarming statistics. According
to a Carnegie Mellon study, driving while using a cell phone
reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving
by 37 percent, and a report from the National Safety Coun-

by people talking on cell phones or sending text messages.

traffic offense taking place.
Secondary law bans text messaging for ALL types of driv-

ticket if you have been pulled over for another driving viola-
tion (ie: Hand-held cell phone use).

Virginia Beach Biketoberfest
Last Year’s 2nd Annual Biketoberfest, held at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront brought a spectacular display of mo-
torcycles and their “Rolling works of art.” This 2 day event sponsored by The Bestwestern Oceanfront, included
entertainment, 24 vendors, scenic bike ride, an after party, a Parade of Bikes and Blessings of the Bikes held
on Sunday. This event was promoted, produced and professionally Judged by G.S. Grifana Carshows, Inc for
the purpose of raising funds for The Children’s Performance Workshops against Child Abuse, an Emmy Award
winning marionette program that teaches elementary school children how to recognize, avoid, and report sexual
abuse and bullying. All proceeds benefited the program, and we are proud to announce that this event will take
place again this October in 2011, bringing bike enthusiasts and their supporters back to the beach.

Holding Charity Events
If you’re holding an event, choose a worthwhile & legitimate charity to raise money for.
Gather your team – choosing helpful, reliable people is a big key to holding a successful event. Invite cars & bikes. You’ll
have a bigger attendance. You’ll need venues to hold registration for a starting point, stops & an ending point. Select a
trustworthy person to account for all the money that is to be spent & that is collected for your event. Pick a date & get
the word out!...emails, flyers, postcards, ads, radio, people. Some avenues of advertising may be able to donate their
assistance for your event, in whole or in part. If there are costs involved, ask your sponsors if they would be willing to
contribute to helping you pay for advertising such as flyers, radio announcements etc.. Figure out the total of what it will
cost, then ask each sponsor to donate a fair portion. The ending location, which is where you’ll spend the most time for
the event after the ride, ask if they would be willing to help your charity in any way. Some places donate 10% or more of
the proceeds from their bar & food sales for the duration of the event – you’re helping them make money by holding your
event at their place so by them kicking in a little, sure would help your charity.

Some things to remember for holding a successful event

- Plan way ahead! 8 to 12 months ahead is not too early to get things started.
- Keep your registration fees & prices fair.
- Choose a decent time for your event. Starting too early in the day may deter people. For many, Saturdays &
Sundays are their only days to sleep in (or recover from the night before).
- Advertise through distributing flyers, emails, web postings (facebook, online event calendars etc..), ads in
motorcycle magazines – ask sponsors to contribute to costs.
- Post your event in every motorcycle event calendar that you can find, in print & online. Most calendar event
listings are free.
- Choose activities or entertainment that will keep people at your event. Live music or a DJ will keep things
rocking most of them time. Celebrities or public figures that folks would love to see & talk with in person
bring a nice crowd to charity event. If things start to get boring or drawn out, people will leave, even if there
are great prizes at the end.
- Have great prizes donated – nothing draws a big crowd more than cool prizes & cash
rewards.
- Appoint an honest & reliable treasurer & even appoint a co-treasurer for a “double check” of your event
finances. You want to make sure that the money that you’re raising goes to the charity & not in someone’s
pocket!

ATTENTION EVENT COORDINATORS

RESERVE YOUR 2011 EVENTS DATE ASAP!!!
We can’t stress enough how important it is to get your events listed as quickly as possible. Every year we see mul-
tiple events scheduled on the same date or same weekend, within the same region. On the other hand, we noticed
many weekends had absolutely nothing going on at all. We found out, through reliable sources, that in some cases,
events were purposely scheduled on the date of another event. Holding charity events to raise money for a cause
is one of the oldest traditions of the motorcycle community…it’s what we do. It’s sad to know that in some cases it
has turned into a competition of sorts, to see who can pull in the most attendance on a date that multiple events are
scheduled….one or all of those events (charities) lost out in one form or another. When selecting a date for your
charity event, we highly encourage you to check & double check our calendar, as well as others & reserve your date
as far in advance as possible. It’s never too early to reserve your date & please choose a day that nothing else is go-
ing within your area if possible. This allows other event coordinators to hopefully choose a date that is open.

If you’ve selected a date to hold your event in 2011 already, at least get it on our calendar now & you can add more
information later. It’s FREE & easy to do. Just got to the Events page of our website www.thunderroads-virginia.com
& submit it. Event info MUST be in our online calendar in order for us to get it into the print magazine. If submitted
by the 15th of the month, it will appear in the next month’s print magazine. Please include as much info as possible
such as: date, name of event, street address, city/state, times, cost, contact person, phone/email. Our event listings
are free for basic information but if you would like to place an actual ad for your event, we have special advertising
rates available, along with free ad design, exclusively for “Charity” events. Email kelly@thunderroads-virginia.com
for more information.

GOD every day for the untold blessings I have been given. As I recall
some of the nicest things in my life, I cannot help but think that the
greatest gift I have been given is love. I have the love of the Creator of
Heaven and Earth. I am so special to the GOD that made me that He
died for me so that I could spend eternity with Him. That is love that
I can only imagine. We are all familiar with John 3:16, “ For GOD so
loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, and that whoever
believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Most of us
know this by heart and it is repeated often, but do we stop long enough
to grasp its meaning? GOD had to come to earth in the form of a man
and died a horrible death to redeem us. The love of GOD knows no
boundaries, it knows no limits.

I recently took a class at a conference on the parking
of vehicles on highways and roadways during an emer-
gency situation. It was extremely informative, these types
of classes usually are. During one of the many videos that
we viewed during the class, I noticed that there was a
motorcycle police officer that was working an accident on
a busy suburban boulevard, along with other emergency
vehicles on the scene. Many emergency vehicles are
the target of secondary collisions at the original accident
