Executive Summary
• Slow start to 2011 hiring. After last month’s year-end lull, hiring picked up slightly in
the first month of 2011. Nationwide job openings increased 1.7% from December 2010,
and showed a steady year-over-year improvement of 65.1% from January 2010. “While
December’s significant decrease in the number of job openings seems discouraging, this
is typical for the end of the year,” explained Gautam Godhwani, CEO of SimplyHired.com.
“The positive growth across almost all metros in January, just one month later, indicates
that the job market is actually recovering quite steadily.”

• Agriculture and automotive industries resume hiring. Despite slowing down in December,
both the agriculture and automotive industries continued to increase in job openings, with
agriculture increasing 43.8% and automotive 13.8% from last month. The automotive
industry, hit hard by the recession, has shown promising growth over the last three months.

• Top nationwide employers unchanged. Four of five top nationwide employers remained
unchanged from last month. Taco Bell moved up to first place while Pizza Hut, also owned
by Yum! Brands, moved down to second. Advance Auto Parts moved from fourth to third,
while HCA dropped two places to fifth. Staples, which last appeared on the list in November
2010, held the fourth position.

• Constant retail and finance growth. Even after the holiday season, retail salesperson jobs
continued to increase, up 89.2%. Similarly, financial and accounting jobs experienced a
48.0% growth.

Employment Impact: New Year

• Seasonal industries decrease hiring. Following the end of the holidays, industries with
cyclical hiring, like retail and transportation, have decreased hiring substantially. Job
openings in retail increased only 2.6% this month, while job openings in transportation
declined 14.4%.

• Noncyclical hiring slowly picks up. Job openings for nearly all industries and
occupations declined in most metros during December 2010. This month, hiring
appeared to pick up again, with the majority of industries, occupations and metros
indicating low but positive changes in job openings (excluding cyclical industries).

Top Hiring Companies by Metro
HIGHLIGHTS
• Healthcare hiring continues to dominate. 33 unique healthcare-related employers appeared
in 49 of 50 metros on this month’s Top Hiring Companies by Metro list, with eight of them
appearing two or more times. Whether this is due to the strength of the industry or a lack of
qualified workers is unclear.

• Baltimore hiring picks up. For the first time since September 2010, the Baltimore metro had
at least five companies hiring for 50 or more jobs: ManTech International, Yum! Brands, L-3
Communications, CACI International and Genesis HealthCare.

About the U.S. Employment Trends Report

The U.S. Employment Trends Report is a monthly summary and analysis of employment
trends in the United States. These findings are based on monthly job seeker activity on
SimplyHired.com, which aggregates millions of listings from over 30,000 employment sites,
and data obtained from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some findings may be projected
from recent historical data. Data may not be representative of all industries, occupations
and/or metro areas. “Metropolitan Areas” in this report are the 50 most populous in the
U.S., as ranked by the Nielsen Company’s Designated Market Area (DMA) list. “Occupation
Categories” are derived from the Department of Labor’s O*NET database.
