lic. You may register for fee and non-fee programs in person, online
or via telephone with a valid credit card to hold the registration

REGISTRATION INFO
Class Registration Policies
• Adult programs and classes that charge a fee require pre-registration and pay-
ment.
• Pre-registration is required and parental release forms need to be signed for all
children’s classes and programs.
• Pre-registration for classes can be done in person at the NECC, online with a cus-
tomer account on our website at www.necommunitycenter.org, or by phone with
a credit card. Information lists about the classes are available at registration.
• Refunds can be requested before classes or programs start. Refunds will be is-
sued in the form of a gift certificate or credited to the participants in-house ac-
count. Refund by check upon approval
• If a class participant misses a class we cannot hold make-ups or prorate the
price of the class.
Inclement Weather Policy
Due to inclement weather, the schedule for classes/NECC may be subject to change.
Please call the NECC or check the website for notification of class status. NECC will
base weather closures on Portland Public School Closures. If PPS’s are closed, NECC
will also be closed. If there is a late PPS opening, NECC will open at the same time
that the schools open.

FACILITY GUIDELINES
NECC Building Rules for Children
• All children under 11 yrs of age must be in the Child Watch Center unless going
to/from a class or under the supervision of an adult (18 years or older).
• Children 13 and older are allowed on NECC exercise equipment after training on
the use of the equipment.
• Children 13 years and older are allowed on the upper gym track area (children
under 13 must be under direct supervision of an adult, 18 years or older).
• Children 4 and older, of the opposite gender, are not allowed in the Adult Locker
Rooms.
• Children 13 and older of the same gender are allowed in the Adult Locker Rooms.
• Children under 13, without direct supervision of a responsible adult (18 years or
older), must use the Family Locker Room.
• The Family Locker Room, where nudity is not allowed, is available for use by all
members.
Behavior Guidelines for Children and Adults in the NECC Facility
• Running is not allowed in any part of the facility (except for the gym, or as part of
a supervised class or activity).
• Balls are to be used to play sports/games in the gym, pool, and in classes and are
not to be bounced in the lobby, locker rooms or halls, and are not to be used in a
destructive manner such as being thrown at equipment (such as the lights).
• Climbing on equipment and furniture is not allowed.
• Yelling inside the facility is not allowed (unless in relation to a class activity that is
supervised).
• Fighting is not allowed, and respect for others is expected at the NECC.
• When individuals are eating in the facility they need to remain in the lobby and
eat at a table.
• Individuals must wear shoes and proper clothing at all times when in areas other
than the pool and changing rooms.

Membership Policies and Procedures ensure that the Northeast Community Center pro-
vides a clean, safe environment for the community it serves. All members are expected
to abide by these policies and procedures while using the NECC. If you have questions,
contact the front desk staff.

Swim Lesson Descriptions


Parent and Child- (Ages 6 months – 6 years) In this class parents are taught how to help their children
be comfortable in the water and introduce age appropriate swimming skills using songs and games
to have a fun and enjoyable experience in the water. At 3 yrs old children may go into preschool
classes. (Maximum 12)
Pre-Level 1- No swimming prerequisite. All skills are performed with help. Exit skills are: 1. Enter
water independently, travel 5 yds., submerge mouth and blow bubbles for 3 sec. then exit water. 2.
Front glide 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 3 seconds then recover to vertical.
Other skills covered are safety, floating, and arm and leg movements. (Maximum 6)
Pre-Level 2 - Pass level 1 skills. All skills can be performed with help. Exit skills are: 1. Front glide 2
body lengths, roll to back, float 5 sec. then recover to vertical. 2. Back glide 2 body lengths, roll to
front and float 5 sec. then recover. 3. Swim on front 3 body lengths, roll to back and float 5 sec., roll
to front and continue swimming 3 body lengths. Other skills covered are safety, bobbing, treading.
(Maximum 6)
Pre-Level 3 - Pass level 2 skills. All skills are performed independently. Exit skills are: 1. Jump in, front
float 5 sec., roll to back and float 5 sec., then recover to vertical. 2. Back float 5 sec. roll to front then
recover to vertical. 3. Swim on front 5 body lengths, roll to back and float for 15 sec., roll to front and
swim for 5 body lengths. Other skills covered include treading, floats, and safety. (Maximum 6)

Swim Lesson Descriptions


Level 1 - No swimming prerequisite. Exit skills are: 1. Enter water, travel 5 yds, bob 3 times, then exit
the pool. 2. Front glide 2 body lengths, roll to back float 3 sec. then recover to vertical. Other skills
include safety, treading, arm and leg movements. (Maximum 6)
Level 2 - Pass level 1 skills. Exit skills are: 1. Jump in, front float 5 sec., roll to back, float 5 sec., then
recovers to vertical. 2. Back float 5 sec., roll to front then recover to vertical. 3. Swim on front 5 body
lengths, roll to back, float 15 sec., and roll to front and swim 5 body lengths. Other skills include bob-
bing, treading, and water safety. (Max 6)
Level 3 - Pass level 2 skills. Exit skills are: 1. Jump in, swim front crawl 15 yds. Tread or float 30 sec.,
and swim elementary backstroke 15 yds. Other skills include beginning dives, side breathing, dol-
phin and scissors kicks, and water safety skills. (Maximum 6)
Level 4 - Pass level 3 skills. Exit skills are: 1. Jump in, swim front crawl 25 yds., then swim elementary
backstroke 25 yds. 2. Swim breaststroke 15 yds. Then swim back crawl 15 yds. Other skills include
diving, open turns, treading, butterfly, sidestroke, and water safety skills. (Maximum 6)
Level 5 – Pass level 4 skills. Exit skills are: 1. Racing dive, swim front crawl for 50 yds., then swim
elementary backstroke 50 yds. 2. Swim breaststroke 25 yds., then swim back crawl 25 yds. Other skills
include surface dives, treading, sculling, and water safety skills. (Maximum 7)
Level 6 – Pass level 5 skills. Exit skills are: 1. Swim 500 yds. continuously using any 3 strokes of your
choice swimming at least 50 yds. of each stroke. 2. Jump into deep water, perform survival float for 5
min. roll to back and float for 5 min. 3. Do a feet-first surface dive, retrieve object from 7 -10 ft. depth,
and return to surface then to starting point. Other skills include flip turns, treading, butterfly, and
water safety skills. (Maximum 7)

Infant -
YOUTH PROGRAMS 13 years
Baby Signing Time
This class teaches American Sign Language to both parent and child with mu-
sic pictures and silly songs. You will be amazed how quickly your will find you
child starting to be able to communicate with you. The class will be taught by
Carissa Mortos, founder of PDX Loves Signing LLC, who is a talented and ex-
perienced teacher. Come learn how to communicate with your child before
they begin to speak.

Youth Indoor Soccer


Want to sharpen your skills, get some good exercise, and have fun in a low-key
environment? Activities will center on the fundamentals of dribbling, pass-
ing, shooting, defense, and teamwork. Class time will be divided between
drills for skills and scrimmaging.

Ballet/Tap 2
For students with prior ballet experience. Children benefit from a dance cur-
riculum with the discovery of music, rhythm, and movement. Children can
work on their balance, coordination, and self-confidence while they explore
music and fantasy with Dancing.

Spike your interest as you learn to dig. Learn the basic skills, and improve
your game. Class will focus on the basics of volleyball with drills and practice
games.

Off this session - Look for next session of volleyball after Winter Basketball League

AGES 13-19 PROGRAMS TEEN


Teen Circuit Training
Learn the proper methods of strength building through the use of resistance
machines or weight training exercises taught by Patrick in the Weight Room.
This class will give you a full body workout, and keep your metabolism revved
up.

Hoopdance Fitness
Feeling strong and confident comes naturally as you explore and express
your emotions through movement within the hoop. You will learn how to
hoop on your torso, arms and legs and play with off-body moves and reverse
hooping. Get an exhilarating and fun cardio workout while relieving stress,
strengthening your core, toning and sculpting your muscles.

‘Surviving the Wild’ - Parent/Child Edition


From hunters to third grade math teachers, the information in this course
is new and improved to engage families to share learning opportunities
around a fun and important topic. We will teach you traditional wilder-
ness skills that are not dependent on modern technology. These skills will
strengthen your connection with the natural world and build your confi-
dence and competency as a back country traveler. Even if you never need
to use the wilderness skills learned, you will appreciate knowing them and
sharing the experience with your little ones.

Knitting for Adults
Beginning and intermediate knitting projects. Come join us in learning the
basics of knitting while making a scarf or a hat. You will learn to cast on, knit,
purl, cast off, make a stitch gauge, read a simple pattern, and much more. Al-
ready know the basics, then choose a little more advanced project. Material
cost determined by selected project.

Book Discussion Group


Facilitator Rob Shinney has his Masters in counseling and Oriental medicine.
Also a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner with specialty training in endocrinol-

This “Lunch Bunch” will share about their favorite books, and the group will
select which books they will read for the next monthly meetings. Everyone is

ADULTPROGRAMS AGES 18+
Parkinson’s Exercise
Research suggests that exercise can help delay and improve the symptoms
of Parkinson’s disease and enhance quality of life for individuals with Parkin-
son’s. This class uses a multi-disciplinary approach to address most of the
symptoms of Parkinson’s , from posture and movement to voice and facial
expression, in a supportive, non-threatening environment. Taught by cer-
tified professional, Nancy Nelson who has extensive knowledge and exer-
cise training specific to Parkinson’s disease, this program uses a variety of
activities such as Tai Chi, Pilates, strength training, stretching and functional
movement to improve muscle strength, agility, flexibility and balance.

Boot Camp
The NECC Boot Camp is an intensive, six week training course created to get
people into great shape as quickly as possible. The class will include exercise
regimens from the U.S. Army, Yoga and Pilates, athletic drills from a number
of popular sports, plyometrics, body weight exercises, as well as resistance
and weight training. The work outs will change from class to class, confusing
your muscles in order to keep your body from becoming accustomed to one
type of routine which minimizes the results you desire. We will also perform
High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) throughout the duration of the pro-
gram. Personal trainer, Patrick Johnston, will lead the NECC Boot Camp and
will answer questions about working out on your own and eating to achieve
your fitness goals.

Watercolors for Adults
Have you ever wanted to paint a thin wash of pale blue over a landscape?
What about adding the look of texture to a painting using water color paints?
Do you yearn to pick up a brush and replicate the sights in front of you? Start
with our basic watercolor class taught by a professional artist. Learn the sim-
ple and basic skills needed to progress to become a skilled painter. Materials

Martial Arts - Aikido


Aikido is a path to self improvement and exercise in learning to live in har-
mony with nature and the world around us. In this 6 week class students will
work with partners to study dynamic throws and powerful pins. Beginners

Tai Chi
Is the most widely known form of Chinese exercise. Strengthen your muscles
and relax your mind with this low-impact Chinese exercise method. Yang
Style helps improve balance, flexibility, and strength. All ages and abilities

When I’m In Charge


Spring Session
Designed for youth ages 8 to 11, this two-and-a-half-hour Red Cross course
prepares children to respond safely to a variety of situations when direct
parent supervision is unavailable.
Participants will:
•Role play answering phone and door situations
•Discuss gun and Internet safety
•Discuss personal safety and first aid situations

Guart Start: Lifeguarding Tomorrow


Learn what it takes to be a great lifeguard- from lifesaving and leadership
skills, to fitness and professional development. The experience you gain
through the GuardStart program will help you prepare for Red Cross life-
guard training.

Prerequisites: swim front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the


side or front, tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs, submerge and
swim 10 feet underwater. (for ages 11 - 14 yrs)
