2ND ANNUAL STUDENT ARTS FESTIVAL


2011: SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Call for Submissions
Montalvo Arts Center and the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE) are pleased to
announce the 2nd annual Arts Splash! Open House & Student Arts Festival at Montalvo Arts
Center. Kindergarten through twelfth grade student teams, with an adult Advisor-Mentor (or
Teacher), are encouraged to submit proposals for collaborative student artworks or performances
that you would like to present at the festival. This year’s theme – Sustainable Communities:
Living, Working and Playing Together – encourages students to take an active role in creating
a collective vision for the future.
Collaborative projects in all arts disciplines are encouraged to apply, including but not limited to:
poetry, literature, music, dance, drama, visual arts, culinary arts, new media and even debate.
Submissions are limited to one per student team and three per school or community organization.
All K-12 public, private and home school students, including independent student groups outside
of schools and organizations, are eligible to participate.

KEY DATES | 2011 STUDENT ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS:

• December 1 | Optional Informational Meeting, 5-6:30pm at Montalvo – RSVP learn@montalvoarts.org
• January 31 | Postmark deadline for proposals of student projects
• February 1-9 | Juried selection of student proposals
• February 10 | Notification of selection sent to all participants
• February 10 – April 10 | Student team artwork preparation
• February 16 or 23 | Mandatory meeting for all Advisor-Mentors, 5-6:30pm at Montalvo
• March 15 | Due: all completed Participant Releases, final Change of Title form, Questions 5 & 6
• April 11-15 | Artwork Installation & Dress Rehearsals

ARTIST STATEMENT Submissions include a brief artist’s statement that is generated by completing our
STUDENT ARTIST STATEMENT FORM. This statement is intended to help you start thinking about your
project and to tell us about your idea: what you want to create, how you will create it, why it is meaningful
to you, and how it responds to the theme. Submissions are considered incomplete unless the artist
statement is included with the proposal submission. Advisor-Mentors may assist in completing required
paperwork for younger students.

ADULT ADVISOR-MENTOR Every student team must include the committed participation of an adult
Advisor-Mentor who will act as team manager and be the main contact for the project. Advisor-Mentors
will provide guidance in creation of the artwork, as well as manage and be responsible for all logistics and
transportation in regards to participation in the Festival. Advisor-Mentors may be school faculty/staff,
teaching artists, community leaders or parents. Individual student teams or their school sponsors are
responsible for financing the projects, rehearsal needs, supplies and materials, costumes, and
transportation to and from the festival and related events.

Eligibility, Guidelines & Criteria
ELIGIBILITY
 Collaborative projects in all arts disciplines addressing the Festival theme, Sustainable
Communities: Living, Working and Playing Together, are encouraged to apply.
 All K-12 students in public, private and home schools throughout the Silicon Valley are eligible.
 Only one submission per student team and three submissions per school or community organization
will be accepted.
 All student groups must have an Advisor-Mentor (an adult who will act as team manager and group’s
contact person).

GUIDELINES
 Projects must address the Festival theme of Sustainable Communities, and should explore the
student group’s collective vision for the future.
 Complete submissions must be postmarked by JANUARY 31, 2011. A complete
submission will include the following documents:
 Student Proposal Cover Form (one per project)
 Artist Statement Form – Questions 1-4
 Due March 15: Artist Statement Questions 5 & 6; Change of Title; Participant Release Forms
 Projects must result from a collaborative effort between students. The project vision should be a joint
effort of the student team, and all members must be creative participants. (Not all members of the
team must work on all aspects of the project.) Original work is strongly encouraged, and may include
student interpretations of existing work.
 The Advisor-Mentor should assist in bringing the project to fruition by supporting the creative vision of
the student team.
 Depictions of violence, abuse, nudity, and profanity are not appropriate in this setting. Montalvo reserves
the right to withdraw or otherwise exclude any material or works for any reason at its sole discretion.
 Submissions may include projects in any arts discipline. Imagination is the limit!

 Projects may reflect the arts integrated with other disciplines such as:
• Science & Technology • Language Arts & World Languages • History & Social Science
• Mathematics • Speech & Debate • Physical Education

SUBMISSION SELECTION CRITERIA


Submissions will be considered along the following criteria:
1. Originality and creativity in the work or project ideas.
2. Originality and creativity in approach to addressing the Festival theme.
3. Effective use of media as related to content.
4. Strong collaboration among student team members in the creation of the work.

MONTALVO ARTS CENTER INDEMNITY AND RELEASE; INFORMED CONSENT


In consideration of the opportunity afforded by the Montalvo Arts Center (Montalvo) for me and/or any minor
child for whom I am guardian to participate in Montalvo’s Student Arts Festival (Festival), I agree to the fullest
extent permitted by law, to defend (with attorneys acceptable to the indemnitee), indemnify, protect and hold
harmless Montalvo, the members of Montalvo’s Board of Trustees, and all officers, employees and agents of
Montalvo and the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), from and against any and all damage,
loss, claim, liability and expense, including attorneys fees, witness fees and other legal costs, incurred
directly or indirectly by reason of any claim, suit or judgment brought by or on behalf of any person or
persons for damages, loss or expense due to, but not limited to, bodily injury or property damage sustained
by such person or persons which arises out of my or my minor child's participation in the Festival, provided
that this indemnity shall not apply to any damage, loss, claim, liability or expense caused by the sole
negligence or willful misconduct of Montalvo or its Trustees, officers, employees, or agents, or the SCCOE.
I further authorize the use by Montalvo of any and all photographs or footage taken of me or such minor child
and his/her artwork in connection with any works which may be produced and/or used by Montalvo. I also
consent to the use of the likeness of myself or my minor child and his/her artwork in connection with
promotional activities related to the photographs or footage; release any and all claims that I or my minor
child may have in connection with the photographs or footage; waive any right that I may have to inspect
and/or approve the photograph or footage; and assign, to the extent that I have any, all right, title and
interest, including any copyright, in the photographs or footage to Montalvo. In addition, I do hereby give
consent to Montalvo to use and/or reproduce any written and spoken words relating to the project or Festival
made by myself or by my minor child for any and all purposes in any form or media.
I also give consent to Montalvo to seek and authorize any medical care or treatment needed for myself or my
minor child on an emergency basis.
