Member of the Month

This month, we profile Hayward Community Gardens

Hayward Community Gardens is a landmark in the city of Hayward, incorporating in 1977, expanding to seven garden sites throughout the city and
then consolidating on one 5.3 acre site in 1983. The gardens are located at 25051 Whitman Street under the PG&E towers on a section of the Eden
Greenway. The purpose of the gardens has always been to provide gardening space mainly for Hayward residents, with the initial target group
being the retired and elderly. Today, the garden has 210 plots and a membership that includes nearly 700 people with extended families from the
East Bay Area. Hayward Community Gardens also share our presence and purpose at the Hayward Farmers’ Market and are steadily building
support for our program within the community. The traditional practices of self-sufficiency, families growing their own food and medicines, have
transformed individual plot spaces into an urban farm and multi-ethnic microcosm.

Our goal is to grow lives and healthy thriving communities by nurturing and promoting understanding, tolerance and peaceful life. The community
gardens is a social and mental health agency, a safe environment away from a very chaotic world, a sanctuary, a place of prayer and reflection, a
classroom, and an opportunity to affect change on our small piece of earth by taking down barriers of race, class, religion, language and
economics around the focus of growing, sharing and eating food. Every year, we produce thousands of pounds of food for our families and for our
low-income community. We are an all-volunteer-run non-profit organization that operates 7 days a week from daybreak until sundown. Over the
years, we have had our struggles. We are constantly striving to strengthen cohesion and internal solidarity within our membership in order to better
advocate for ourselves. Currently, we receive little support from our local government despite the incredible model of food sovereignty we provide.
We want to become a united force that is able to demand the support of our local leaders. The Hayward Community Gardens does not have a
website, but we are always willing to share information about what has been successful for us, and we love to hear ideas on how to overcome the
barriers we face. Please contact us by phone at 510-537-8901 or email at hcgardens@gmail.com
