CFJC News & Events

::Steering Committee Nominations. All current CFJC members are invited to


nominate themsleves or other members for a position on the Steering
Committee, the Coalition’s decision-making body. Responsibilities include
participation in a sub-committee (policy, operations or campaign), attendance
at a minimum of 2 meetings per year, a one-year minimum time commitment,
and a small fundraising goal. For more information or to nominate someone,

:: Recent training in Kern County. On Halloween, CFJC, in partnership with


Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment and South Central Farmers,
conducted an exciting and inspiring workshop in Wasco on starting cooperative

:: Getting to Grocery: Tools for Attracting Healthy Food Retail to Underserved
Neighborhoods. Public Health Law & Policy (PHLP) presents a new guide for
advocates working to increase healthy food access in low-income

:: Food, Inc. Discussion Guide Released -- The Center for Ecoliteracy announces
the publication of a free discussion guide it developed for Food, Inc., Intended
for highschool teachers, the 102-page guide provides questions and activities to
promote critical thinking and a deeper understanding of complex issues, from
public health to animal welfare and workers' rights. To download a copy:

:: Access to Aquaponics – An interactive guidebook to aquaponics, the process


in which you grow fish and vegetables in a contained water system, has just
been released. The book provides instruction for anyone with a living room or
larger space to create their own aquaponic system. Check it out at

:: Community Food Security in the United States – The Center for a Livable Future
at Johns Hopkins University recently released this survey of relevant scientific

Latino farmers awaiting justice for the discriminatory USDA practices that

Grants and Fundraising Opportunities

:: The makers of Hidden Valley® Salad Dressings are now accepting applications
for the 2009-10 Love Your Veggies™ grant program. With support from its partner
the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF), the grant program will once again seek to
help schools provide innovative programs to increase consumption of fresh fruits
and vegetables in the lunchroom. For more info:

:: The Farmers' Market Coalition is receiving applications for Information


Marketplace Professional Development Mini-Grants, available to state and
regional farmers' market organizations hosting trainings for market managers,
market boards, and/or producers during Winter 2009-2010. Eligible organizations
can apply for one of approximately 16 grants (up to $500 each) to support
professional development programs to strengthen farmers' markets. Only
farmers' market associations, agencies, and other organizations, not individual
farmers' markets, may receive funding at this time. For more info:

:: The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is accepting nominations for its
second annual Growing Green Awards. Winners will be chosen in four
categories: Food Producer, Business Leader, Thought Leader, and Water
Steward. A cash prize of $10,000 will be given to the winner of the Food
Producer category award. For more info:

Jobs and Internships

:: The Accelerated School (TAS) seeks a part-time Youth Coordinator in Los


Angeles for the Healthy Eating Active Communities (HEAC) initiative to join an
expanding team of professionals that are making a positive difference in the
lives of TAS students and the community. The Youth Coordinator will develop a
deeper understanding about the social issues related to childhood obesity in
disadvantaged communities such as lack of fresh food access, neighborhood
safety, the build environment and social justice. The Youth Coordinator will work
with team members and consultants who are experts in the field to learn about
and develop strategies to address these inequities and increase the
community’s capacity to advocate for an improved physical activity and

:: Full Circle Farm is hiring Farm Crew to learn the practices and principles of
sustainable farming. The position would include helping to produce mixed
vegetables and fruits for a diverse set of markets. To apply, please first send an

:: Farm Apprenticeship Opportunities at Soil Born Farms in Sacramento – An


opportunity to learn the basic concepts and practical application of organic
food production. The apprenticeship runs from March 15 to October 31, 2010
with a work week of 45-60 hours over 5 days each week and includes room,

:: Assistant Farm Manager at Soil Born Farms in Sacramento – Soil Born Farms is
seeking a person who has had at least 1-2 years of experience in organic food
production, and is looking to take on more responsibility. Compensation:

:: Farm Manager Wanted for Oz Farm in Coastal Mendecino – Oz Farm is looking


for someone (or a couple) with significant farming experience who can take
management responsibility for the farm operation and significantly expand the
existing CSA as well as the restaurant, and retail and wholesale accounts to a
year-round operation with additional clients. The farm manager must work
closely with Oz Farm's owners, who are particularly interested in year-round

:: Production Manager Wanted at Riverhill Farm in Nevada City, CA. The


applicant must be detail-oriented, hard working, energetic and enjoy working
collaboratively with the farm owners and with interns. Additionally, the preferred
candidate should have three years of previous organic farm experience,
preferably on a CSA farm, with increasing responsibility for crop planning and
production. The Production Manager will be responsible for working with the
farmers to ensure the timely planting of crops for all markets. Additionally, the
production manager will work closely with the farm's interns to facilitate their
