Events and Announcements

:: The Department of Justice (DOJ) and the USDA will hold a series of public
hearings around the country on anti-trust violations, i.e. corporate dominance in
food and agriculture, in 2010. Members of the public are urged to submit letters
to the DOJ about their experience of corporate concentration in the food
system by Dec. 31, 2009. This is a great opportunity to challenge the strangle-
hold held by Monsanto, Smithfield, Cargill, Tyson, ADM, etc. To get tips on how to

:: Californians for Pesticide Reform Annual Meeting, “Healthy Harvest: From Field
to Table,” co-hosted by Pesticide Watch Education Fund will take place at
Sacramento City College on March 20th, with events on March 19th as well.

:: San Diego Natural History Museum is hosting Sustainable Planet: Food Lecture
Series. Lecture topics are: Ecology of Soil: A Public Health Concern, on Jan. 12,
Victory Gardens: Join the Garden Revolution on March 2, and Developing

:: Congratulations to the Movement Generation delegation to Copenhagen for


their amazing work to amplify grassroots voices calling for “system change —
not climate change” and hold industialized countries responsible for their

:: USDA studying / promoting hoop houses. The National Resource Conservation


Service, through the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initative will be offering
grants to farmers, in CA and 38 other states, interested in extending their
growing season. Over the course of three years, NRCS will study the
effectiveness of hoop houses in reducing pesticide use, keeping vital nutrients in
the soil, extending the growing season, and increasing yields. For more info and

:: Mobilization for Climate Justice protest at Chevron in San Ramon coincided


with first day of Copenhagen negotiations. 31 were arrested at the non-violent
civil disobedience to protest Chevron’s global destruction of communities, the

:: Scholarships to the Small Farms Conference taking place in San Diego from
Feb. 28-March 2, 2010 are available to small farmers with limited means, as well

and Community Health Program. Successful applicants shoud have a Masters in

:: The ClimateWorks Foundation seeks a Program Officer with climate policy


expertise to provide institutional development and sector-based strategy
support for the ClimateWorks Network. The candidate will focus on the design
and implementation of domestic climate policy commitments, in conjunction
with international climate commitments, and domestic and international
policies to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD).

:: Live Earth Farm in Central California has an Organic Farm Apprenticeship


beginning in January, 2010. Prior experience is required and a desire to
participate in all activities on the farm is a must. This is an opportunity for those
intending to pursue farming as a career path. The position lasts until mid

:: Riverhill Farm in Nevada City is offering six internships for 2010. Interns
participate in all aspects of the farm from seeding to harvest. Through the
development of practical farming skills, special intern projects, directed
readings, discussion and time set aside for more formal learning, interns gain the
skills necessary to gain permanent work on a farm or, with enough preparation,

:: Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills is seeking Agriculture Journeyman Farmer. The
position is a farmer-in-training position for someone with previous farming
experience. The Journeyman Farmer works in conjunction with the Agriculture

Services Agency of Mountain View, camp programs, and farmers’ market.
