How to Bid
To bid at a DVLA Online Auction, please follow the 6 simple steps below:
BID DEADLINES
Please note that bids will only be accepted from 10.00am on 27th October
until the End Time on Wednesday 17th November 2010 (see page 23 for
details). No bids can be accepted by any means after this time.

Maximum Bids and Sliding End Times
Maximum Bids
The DVLA Online Auction runs on the principle of “Maximum Bids”. Bidders submit “Maximum Bids” which are invisible
to other bidders. Bidding starts at the Reserve Price for each registration, clearly shown online. If there is competitive
bidding on a Lot, the auction system will automatically increase bids on behalf of bidders in £10 increments. Once the
“Maximum Bid” has been reached, the system will stop bidding.
The current winning bid price for each registration is on view on the website at all times along with the number of bidders
on each Lot.
In this scenario, Bidder A has a Maximum Bid greater than his current winning bid. Bidder B places a bid against Bidder A
which is lower than Bidder A’s Maximum Bid which has the effect of increasing the winning bid price but still in Bidder A’s
favour. Bidder B then increases his Bid beyond Bidder A’s Maximum Bid. This places the winning bid with Bidder B at one
bidding increment (£10) greater that Bidder A’s maximum. Importantly, as Bidder B outbid Bidder A, the End Time slides by
30 minutes to allow Bidder A to retaliate.
If no more bids are placed, the lot will sell at 5.30pm to Bidder B for £1,010 (even though his Maximum Bid was £1,050).

2 Bidding Strategy
Identical bids are taken on a first come, first served basis. If there is
competitive bidding, your bids will be taken in £10 increments up to your
Maximum Bid.
We strongly recommend you bid your maximum amount early as there is no
advantage to leaving your bid until the last minute.
We do not recommend bidding using internet access from a mobile phone or
similar device due to reduced visibility of the website
Payment
4

Assignment Fee.
Your credit or debit card details must be provided in order to register as a
bidder. If you are successful, your nominated card will automatically be
charged with a 10% deposit. An invoice will then be sent to you.

Questions & Answers
Q
How does a DVLA Online Auction differ from a traditional DVLA Auction?
A DVLA Online Auction differs from a traditional DVLA Auction in that there is no live, physical auction to attend.
A Bidders submit "Maximum Bids" which are invisible to other bidders and bidding starts at the Reserve Price for each registration.
If there is competitive bidding activity on a Lot the auction system will increase bids on behalf of a registered bidder up to their
Maximum Bid. If someone’s Maximum Bid is outbid, the underbidder will be sent an email inviting them to increase their
Maximum Bid (only if they have registered and bid online). When the End Time has passed, each Lot will be sold to the highest
bidder for the amount of their winning bid. See examples on page 3.
Q
How do the “Sliding End Times” work?
The “Sliding End Time” is a mechanism to prevent auction sniping, or the practise of rival bidders outbidding each other with just
Q
How can I submit my bids?
We strongly recommend you use our online bidding service as you will receive notifications if you are outbid.

increase your bids up until the End Time. You cannot cancel bids once placed.

If you do not have access to the Internet, you can submit your bids by using the Bidder Registration Form in this Online Auction

Q
What are Reserve Prices?
A Reserve Prices are the minimum prices at which Lots will be sold. All Reserve Prices are clearly shown in the catalogue for every
auction. Please note that these do not include the additional charges of VAT, Buyer’s Premium (+vat) and Assignment Fee.
Q
What bids will the auctioneer take?
A The lowest bid that will be accepted is the Reserve Price for each Lot. You can make any bid you like above the Reserve Price
but it must be in increments of £10. No bids in pence will be taken.
Q
How can I find out what other bids people have made?
A The current highest bid on each Lot will be visible at all times, together with the number of bidders..
Q
How do I know if I have been outbid?
A You will be able to see online the status of all the Lots on which you have placed a bid. If your Maximum Bid has been exceeded
by another bidder, you will be sent an email to inform you (only if you have registered and bid online). You may then be
able to increase your Maximum Bid before the End Time.
