DearRobert,todayyousolemnlyprofess
the religiousvowsof poverty,chastityand
obediencein the Order of the Clerics
Regularof St.Paul,the Barnabites.Youdo
sobeforethe Church,the Peopleof God,in
the course of the Church'sPrayer,the
Liturgr, defined by Vatican II as "the
summit towardwhich all activity of the
Churchis directed and the sourcefrom
whichall her powerflows." (S.C.10)
Essentially,the Liturgyis JesusChrist
offeringhimselfto the Fatherand to his
Peoplein a suprcmeactoflovebythepower
of the Holy Spirit. It is thereforehighly
fitting that youmakeyourownoffering"to
love the lord your God with your whole
heart,with yourwholesoul,with yourwhole
strengthandwith yourwholemindandyour
neighboras yourself,"(Dt. 6,6;Mk 12,30f;
Mt, 22,37f;Lk 10,22f),accordingto the
Barnabiteconstitutions,in the courseof a
Litulgy.

tity. TtrecharmingOldTestament storyof
youngSamuel culminates in hisdeclaration:
"Speak,[ord, for yourservantis listening,"
with the sameattituderevealedby Maryat
the dawningofthe NewTestament: "l am
theseryanttheLord;let it bedoneto meas
yousay." (Lk 1,38)
In ourrelationshipwith God,listeningis
simplyessential.In averyrealsense, today
youformallyprofessto listen to God.As a
contemporary theologian(Ib. Vadakethala
Vineeth)aptlyputs it: "Havinggivenhis
fleshto Christin chastity,andhisworldto
Christin poverty,a Religioushasonlyone
concemin life,that oflisteningto Godand
Iiving in God which is the basis of his
obedience."
So,today,youfreelyandpubliclyprofess
to listen to God, not to Your own self,
because listeningto one'sselfleadsto self-
destructionbut listeningto Godleadsto
life. As we read in todaY'sGosPel:
"Whoeverwould savehis life will loseit;but
whoeverloseshis life, for mysake,will save
it,"
Whyis this so?Whyis listeningto Godso
uniquelyessentialfor ourtruewell-being?
fire mostprofoundanswerto this question
is foundin today'ssecondreading.Because
Godis love.Thisis whatyoubelieve; thisis
yourfundamental faith.
Radically,yourreligous professionis a
profession offaith; faith in the Godwhois
love;in the Godwhois the FatherofJesus
Christ;the Godwhoshowed thedepthofhis
lovebygivingushisonlySon.Isn'tthisthe
centralthemeof Christmas? "Loveconsists
in this: notthat wehavelovedGodbut that
he haslovedus andhassenthis Sonasan
offeringforoursins."(Second reading).In
otherwords,Godhasshownusthat thetrue
way to love is by giving,indeedby self-
giving. By giving his only Son,his own
pedectImage,Godgaveof himself.
Yourprofession is a statementof love,a
statementof self-giving in responseto God's
self-givingand to Christ's self-giving:
"Thoughhe wasin the formof God,he did
not deemequalitywith Godsomethingto
graspat. Ratherhe emptiedhimselfand
tookthe formof a slave,beingbornin the
likenessof men...and it wasthus that he
humbledhimseltobediently accepting
even
death,deathon the cross."(Phil 2,6f)
Christmaspoints to Calvary.TheBaby
bornin Bethlehem wasnotborn"to sleepin
heavenlypeace," but to climbthecross, his
supremeact of self-giving to theFatherand
to his People. "If anyonewantsto be a
followerof mine,let him renouncehimself
and take up his crossand follow me.
Anyonewholoseshis life for my sakewill
find life.
Thislife with God,throughJesus,in the
Holy Spirit is so uniquelypreciousthat
gaining the whole world meansnothing
compared to it. Thisyoualsoafrirmbyyour
profession today.
It maybe askedhowwe know that we
haveGod'slife in us. "Thewayweknowwe
remainin him andhe in us is that he has
givenus of his Spirit." (Secondreading)
Now,what the Spirit brings is totally
difrerentfromwhatloveof selfbrings. St.
Paultells us: "Whenself-indulgence is at
work the results arc obvious: sexualir-
responsibility,idolatry, feuds and wran-
gling,jealousy,bad temperand quanels,
disagreements, factions...Thosewhobehave
like this will not inherit the Kingdomof
God, What the Spirit brings is love,joy,
peace,patience,kindness,generosity, fi-
delity,gentleness andself-control." (CTGal
5,19f)
Anyonecanseehowthis Paulineanayof
spiritualqualitiesanddispositions belongs
to the very core of our Religiouslife, in
relationto God,in relationto ourtsarnabite
Community andin relationto all people,
Yourprofession of faith andloveis alsoa
profession ofjoy, despiteall frustrations;a
profession ofpeace,despiteanxieties, con-
flicts and failures;a professionof patient
endurance in thefaceoflife-long struggles.
Youprofessto believein the GodofHope,of
whomPaulsays: "MayGod,the sourceof
hope,fill you with all joy and peacein
believingsothat throughthe powerof the
Holy Spirit you may havehope in abun'
dance."(Rm15,13)
Kindnessand gentlenessgo very well
with loveandimply an understanding and
forgiving spirit, essentialto community
living. Yourgenerosity and fidelitymust
remainundeterredby chancehappenings
or acts of humanfreedomthat mayplay
havocwith your best laid plans and your
purestintentions.Finally,fidelityandself-
control will carry you throughall weak-
nesses,in courageand humility,checking
anger,inflexibility, assertivepride, with-
drawingpride,hurt pride.

God'splanfor us. Humanability alonewill
