complete your discussion and outline of your speech. Selected pairs are to present
their task in the class. The presentation should take about 7 minutes.

In your presentation, you are required to:

1) state one (1) reason for your choice of order used for the said speech.
2) draft an outline of your presentation
3) provide a solution to the said topic

1
4) present this outline to the class

Topics of persuasive speech and the scenario.

1) Cell phones and cars are a dangerous mix

Case scenario:
Statistics show that numerous accidents are caused when drivers use cell phones
while driving. One of your family members had a nasty road accident due to this. You
need to persuade your audience that using cell phones while driving is dangerous.

Basically, you wish to drive home the message to persuade drivers to switch off their
phones when they switch on their engines. In fact, dangerous driving is caused by
such drivers not concentrating on the road. You are required to provide a solution to
this problem.

As a user of the new telephone device for mobile vehicles, you are to promote the
audience to consider using this new product/service/system or item that you have
used to solve this problem.

2) Recycling is no longer just an option

Case Scenario:
You are required to persuade your audience that alternative energy is not just an
option any more. It is vital to our needs and to our prosperity. Describe how the
world is quickly using up its supplies of fossil fuels and that with more demands on
electricity we will have to find other sources. Recycling is a solution.

You see the need to promote the use of a particular recycling product/item that is
very useful to all users. Encourage your audience to use a particular
product/service/system/software that you invented to promote and encourage active
recycling.

3) Exams should be abolished: Other Ways of Assessment.

Case scenario:
This case takes the view that exams are stressful and that they give no real
indication of ability. You are required to point out that students should not be judged
on their performance on one day when they may be ill for instance. You say a far
fairer approach is project work and continual assessment. Assessment should also be
placed on the active participation and commitment of students in co-curricular
activities.

You have come up with an idea of an alternative form of assessment. Promote this
idea of using a new system/software of assessing students’ performance in the
university to your friends.

Note: All written outlines are to be submitted to the lecturer at the end of the class.
