1- READING COMPREHENSION

… and what do you do ?

Our guest this is Matt Cross who works as an interpreter for an international organisation. Here are some of
the things Matt told us when we spoke to him in Zurich.
I haven't always been interested in languages. When I was at school my favourite subjects were Biology and
Maths. And, of course, I loved all sports. I was in the school football and cricket teams. I played every
Saturday.
I became interested in languages when I went on an exchange visit to France and then, the next year, to
Germany. I enjoy speaking to people in their own language and I seem to learn languages quite quickly. I
don't mind people laughing at my mistakes and I always ask my friends to correct me whin I make a mistake.
After my visit to Germany, I decided to study a foreign language at university. I chose Japanese because very
few people can speak and write Japanese in the UK. I thought I would get a good job. I worked hard at
university and did well in the examinations. Then I got a job with a company in Tokyo. I lived and worked in
Tokio for four years.
Now, I'm working in Zurich and I'm enjoying my job very much . The best part of the job is meeting lots of
interesting people. The worst part is that we often have to work late in the evening and at weekends. I like
Zurich – there's a lot to do here. I've got a modern flat near the centre of the city – it's on the fifth floor and
the view over the city is great. I've painted all the rooms myself – in my favourite colours – grey, cream and
blue.
I think I'll stay in my present job for five or six years and then move to the USA. My girlfriend is American.
She works in New York so I'd like to get a job there, perhaps working for a multinational company.
