Sunday classes are at 10:40 A.M., for
both adults and children. Refreshments
are offered in Helfta Hall after the
morning Masses. Vespers are sung at 4:45
P.M., followed by Benediction.
¶THIS WEEK
The patron saint of work with boys,
St. John Bosco, blesses our boys
tomorrow as they gather at church at
4:00 P.M. for a meeting of the Knights
of the Sacred Heart.
Tuesday’s Saint Ignatius is on fire
with love of God. We ask him to light
our way to church on Wednesday for
Candlemas. St. Blaise’s candles come
out for throats on First Thursday (pray
for priests) and again next Sunday. Take
your place around the Adoration altar on
First Friday, for a Communion of
Reparation or a visit during Exposition.
With St. Agatha, a virgin martyr of
the Canon, invoked against breast cancer,
we make our First Saturday devotions.
The one Mass is at 7:30 A.M., followed
by Benediction.

CANDLEMAS
The Feast of the
Purification/Candlemas. A
special evening “Mass of
Candles” follows their Blessing
and the Presentation Procession at 5:30 PM.
Our “Winter Soup Supper” follows the
Mass. Plan to spend this lovely feast of Our
Lord and Our Lady with your “church
family” by bringing your children to take
part in the candlelight procession. After
Mass we will share a family supper of bread,
wine, soup and desserts.
As you did last year, bring your favorite
soup in a crock pot, and the church will
supply a variety of tasty breads and wines.

Our poetry offering this week is a good one for the
close of Christmastide, and also makes me think of
the humility of St. Francis de Sales who often
preached to two or three. His own patron, St.
Francis of Assisi, did indeed preach to beasts.

THE PURIFICATION
The Church celebrates on
Wednesday the the festival of the
Presentation of Christ in the temple,
and also that of the Purification of the
Blessed Virgin Mary, Candlemas.
The Virgin Mother of Christ was
not obliged to conform to the law of
Moses, which commanded women to
be purified in the temple, after child-
birth and to present to God their
first-born. Learn, by this example of
obedience and humility, to submit to
the Law of God, to fulfill all justice,
and to practice all that the Church
commands. Let us beg of God to purify
us from the stains which we have
contracted by sin, through our
commerce with the world, and our
contact with early things. Let us offer
ourselves to God, in order to live for
Him alone, and according to His holy
will.
If on this day any person wishes to have tapers
and candles blessed, they may be held up during the
Benediction.

Bishop, Confessor, Doctor of the Church
One of the greatest of modern
missionaries and apostles of charity, St.
Francis was born in 1567 and died in
1622. He became Bishop of Geneva at
a time when Europe was plagued by
hordes of Calvinists and other heretics.
His outstanding characteristics were
gentleness and humility of spirit,
virtues which enabled him to effect the
return to the Church of seventy

and cultivating his virtues, we should
remember his saying: “What is good

PATIENCE

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.
Hebrews 10:36

Patience is not to be reserved for only certain kinds of circumstances. Apply it universally to everything that comes
your way. Some only want to suffer when it brings them honor. They are wounded in combat or suffer religious
persecution. Maybe they are impoverished by a lawsuit they actually win. Such people don’t want trouble. They want
the sense of honor that goes with it.
A truly patient person will take it all equally. To be picked on and criticized by mean people is of little concern to
a courageous person. But to be denounced and treated badly by good people, by our own friends and relatives is a true
test of virtue. The sting of a bee is far more painful that the bite of a fly. Attacks of good people are much harder to
bear. Sometimes two good people, both with good intentions, have ideas that conflict. They end up attacking each
other and slinging mud.
Your patience is required not only for the major parts of the problems that come to you, but also for the little
incidental snags that come along with them. Many would be willing to live with evil if it were not inconvenient.
“Poverty wouldn’t bother me if it didn’t prevent me from educating my children, helping my friends, and living

Give me patience, Lord God. Send me what You will. Let me try to remedy what I can and then wait to see
