LeConte SGC Meeting Notes 12/8/2010

Attending:
Denise Montgomery, Ben Buettner, Dana Blanchard, August Fern, Yawo Tekpa, Jocelyn Bale-
Glickman, Jacqueline Bott, Cheryl Wilson, Estella Cisneros, Chris Martin, Penny Peak.

Budget Update:
-BSEP $11,600.

-LeConte children will not be participating in MOSAIC this year. The program has put a cap at 35
kids which is too low to allow LeConte participation.

-Budget Addendums Approved: All items included in the Site Plan Addendum submitted by
principal Wilson were approved.

Kid Power/PBS:
Discussion of the “Kid Power” and “Positive Behavior Support” programs and how they are
implemented in the school environment. Some concern that the two programs are not well
understood by the parents at large. Some parents would like a better understanding of how
these programs are being presented to the students. Dana volunteers to present at a PTA
meeting to clarify how the programs are being implemented at LeConte.

PBS Summary: PBS is geared toward strategies that teachers can use to create environments
that benefit children. The program is designed to help staff develop consistent school-wide
procedural requirements. Positive framing when discussing behavior issues. Key words:
“Responsible”, “Safe”, “Respectful”.

Kid Power Summary: Kid Power is a set of specific tools and skills for students to use when they
encounter troublesome common situations ie. Name calling, bullying, etc.
Kinder info night report:
Kinder info night was a success. There was a healthy amount of positive interest in the school.
Jocelyn needs more tour guides. Cheryl has brochures for tour guides.

Principal’s Meeting:
Rebecca Chun wants to change the District’s evaluation process. Each principal will be guided
through the process of creating an evaluation system for a particular program at their
respective schools. The goal is to give the principals tools that they can use to objectively assess
the effectiveness of programs in house. Cheryl is interested in looking at the implementation of
the reading program at LeConte.

Zachary Cruz Foundation:


$50,000 will be donated by the family of Zachary Cruz to the foundation in his name. The
monies will be administered by BUSD and will be directed toward increasing access to
technology at LeConte school. Cheryl will provide quotes for laptop cart, other items that the
school needs.

Family Advisory Council Report:


-Issues around support for sub in Natalia Bernal’s class while she is on maternity leave.

Parents have asked for support. Feel that the sub would benefit from additional
classroom management tools. There are concerns about children leaving the classroom,
general management issues. Cheryl will focus on helping the sub with time and resource
management.

-Parents want update on Kid Power and discipline.

Dana will present on Kid Power and PBS at the next PTA meeting.

On January 2nd, people from Kid Power will present to the staff in a training focused on
safety.
