Abstract

This study was conducted primarily to determine the extent of knowledge and
practice towards first-aid among the residents in selected barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos
Sur. The research study utilized the frequency and percentage to show the distribution of
respondent’s profile in terms of socio-demographic profile, common illnesses/conditions
needing first-aid suffered for the past two years, and sources of information about first-
aid. The mean was also used to describe the extent of knowledge and practice towards
first-aid among the residents in selected barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur. The Simple
Linear Correlation Analysis was utilized to determine the relationships between the
dependent and independent variables and Analysis Variance for the difference between
the extent of knowledge and practice towards first-aid between and among the barangays.
The researchers employed the descriptive research design using correlational
technique. The respondents of the study were mothers ages 18 – 50 with 200 respondents
in the eight (8) barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur. The questionnaire checklist was used
to gather relevant information needed in this study.
In this study the following were found: the respondents were married, high school
graduate, unemployed and with the age group of 21 – 23. They sometimes suffered
common illness needing first-aid and most of the acquired their information through radio
and the barangay health workers (BHWs). They have very high knowledge on wounds,
fainting, insect and animal bites and seek medical help immediately in times of these
illnesses. They also always practice cleansing the wound with soap and water.
There are significant differences in the extent of knowledge and practice of first-
aid on all illnesses between and among the selected barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur.
However, there is no significant relationship in the extent of practice on first-aid among
the respondents and the socio-demographic profile.
There are also significant relationships in the extent of practice on first-aid and on
wounds for the suffered illness; on broadcast media, internet and health providers for the
sources of information. Likewise, there are significant relationships in the extent of
knowledge of first-aid among the residents and on age and occupation for the socio-
demographic profile; wounds for the illness suffered; and broadcast media, internet and
health providers for sources of information.

Summary
This study aimed to determine the extent of knowledge and practice towards first
– aid among the residents in selected barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur. The research
study the frequency, percentage and mean to describe the socio – demographic profile
and the extent of knowledge and practices towards first – aid among the residents in the
selected barangays of Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur.
The Analysis of Variance was employed to determine the difference between the
extent of knowledge and practice towards first – aid between and among barangays.
While the Simple Linear Correlation Analysis was also utilized to determine the
relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The researchers engaged
the descriptive research design using correlational technique. The respondents of the
study were mothers ages 18 – 50 with 200 respondents in the six (6) barangays of
Nagbukel. The questionnaire checklist was used to gather relevant information needed in
this study.

Conclusions
From the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:
1. The respondents were predominantly with the age group of 21 – 25, married,
high school graduate, and unemployed. The respondents “sometimes” suffered
common illness needing first – aid on wounds, vomiting, fainting, insect bites
and animal bites. Most of them acquired information about first – aid through
radio and the barangay health workers (BHWs).
2. The respondents have “very high” knowledge on wounds, fainting, insect bites
and animal bites. They “always” seek medical help immediately in times of
fainting, vomiting, including insect and animal bites. They always practice
cleansing the wound with soap and water.
3. There are significant differences in the extent of knowledge and practice of
first – aid on wounds, fainting, vomiting, insect and animal bites between and
among the selected barangays of Nagbukel.
