An ecosystem is a biological environment consisting of all the organisms living in a

particular area, as well as all the nonliving, physical components of the environment
with which the organisms interact, such as air, soil, water, and sunlight.[1] It is all the
organisms in a given area, along with the nonliving (abiotic) factors with which they
interact; a biological community and its physical environment.[1]

• 1.1 Virtually all of Earth’s ecosystems have been significantly transformed through
human actions. Changes have been especially rapid in the last 50 years and today the
fastest changes are taking place in developing countries. Ecosystems are particularly
affected by large-scale fishing, freshwater use, and agriculture. More...
• 1.2 Ecosystems depend on fundamental environmental cycles such as the continuous
circulation of water, carbon, and other nutrients. Human activities have modified these
cycles, especially during the last 50 years, through increases in freshwater use, carbon
dioxide emissions, and fertilizer use. This in turn has affected the ability of ecosystems to
provide benefits to humans. More...

Problem faced by eco system

FIVE MAJOR PROBLEMS

1. Global Warming

2. Ocean Pollution

3. Air Pollution

4. Deforestation

5. Endangered Species

It is not yet a hopeless case, we could still do something to make this world a better place to live
in… It will be good to famiiarize our self with the major problems of our ecosystem, so we
would be aware, not only of our actions but to what is going on with our surroundings as well.

Many people aren’t still aware that ocean pollution is a major problem that isn’t only affecting
the ocean but the rest of the Earth as well. Ocean pollution directly affects living
organisms in ocean and indirectly humans and their health. There are many sources of pollution
and the most dangerous is illegal dumping, especially of poisonous materials. This illegal
dumping is unfortunately so, wide spread and is causing damage to many plants and animals in
the ocean. On top of the food chain we could easily end up eating seafood that was harmed by
some toxic materials before it came to our plates. Especially dangerous is the lead which can
cause a lot of health problems, especially damaging brain and kidneys. Recycling is the right
answer but unfortunately not for all people.

Dumping is the biggest problem but there are other problems as well like wastewater, use of
pesticides and other chemicals in agriculture, which you definitely wouldn’t think of right away.
Wastewater is a run-off from rainwater that ends up in rivers, lakes and oceans as well. Majority
of people still don’t know that this run-off is going into the ocean at daily bases in small amounts
which are piling hence creating a major problem. Agriculture is also harmful to the ocean
because pesticides and other dangerous chemicals are taken off of the plants and carried to the
oceans when it rains.

Air pollution is another burning ecological problem. Air pollution comes from variety of
different sources like factories, power plants, cars, buses, trucks, wildfires, etc… Air pollution
doesn’t only affect air, but also threatens the health of humans, trees and animals and is
destroying the ozone layer which protects us from dangerous ultra-violet radiation. Statistically
speaking, every day average individual breathes more than 3,000 gallons of air and since many
people live in urban areas full of smog this affect their health causing them lot of health
problems.

In Beijing alone, where the Olympics is to be held this year, out-door sport are said to be risky
due to the bad condition of the air in the said place.

Extinction is forever. It means the dying out of a species of any living thing. It is the
complete disappearance of a species from the Earth. Animals that are endangered are those in
immediate danger of becoming extinct if something isn’t done to save them. Threatened
animals and plants are those that are greatly reduced in number in their natural range or
ecosystem.
Another way humans are endangering animals is by changing the environment. Each species
has special adaptations suited to its habitat. If this habitat is quickly changed, the organism
may not be able to adapt and so it dies. Look around your neighborhood. The buildings for
house and stores and the parking lots and streets cover land that was once the home of plants and
animals. Those not able to find new food and shelter die out.

Extinction can also come about because of pollution. Again, the source of this problem can be
people. Examples of human caused pollutants that are endangering animals are as follows:

Pesticides are used to get rid of “pest” species, but the poison often harms more than just the
pest. Chemicals dumped into waterways not only affect drinking water supplies for people but
can also poison birds, fish, plants and other life forms, as well as the animals that eat these
organisms. Oil spills in both fresh and marine environments threaten and have long lasting
effects on the lives of many species. Polluting gases from the burning of fossil fuels affect all
living organisms. Waste that finds its way into oceans, lakes, and ponds can e mistaken by
animals as food. Plastic and other waste items can be deadly to animals.

Global warming is the most serious ecological problem, not to mention other ecological
problems like air and sea pollution, extinction of many animal species, acid rains and many
other. Mother Earth has become very vulnerable and her vulnerable condition makes us
vulnerable too. Global warming has already caused serious climate changes, and climate changes
together with air pollution are responsible for many diseases and of course deaths.

And although there are so many problems that are already showing their devastating potential,
appropriate action is nowhere to be seen. There are some small actions but what is really
required is one huge action on global scale that would include most of the world’s population.
Small-scaled actions are only good on certain areas and have little or none effect on global
situation.

Some scientists say it’s maybe all over as we failed to make the right move at the right time, but
it’s still not too late, if not for removing problems then at least to try stopping them from further
development. Unfortunately this kind of action is almost impossible since many people still lack
ecological awareness thinking only how to satisfy their needs, and not the needs of complete
mankind.

Fossil fuels mainly responsible for global warming are still dominant energy source and
renewable energy sources are really thing of the future. What future? If this trend continues what
kind of future will this be? Do we really have to get ourselves on urge of extinction in order to
know what to do next or at least once humanity can react while is still time? Unfortunately
humanity doesn’t think enough of future generations as they have right to inherit mother Earth as
strong and beautiful mother and not like some old woman who’s days are numbered. We simply
don’t have the right to take from our descendants something that belongs to them as much as it
belong to us.

Profit and economy are still much more significant in eyes of many than ecology which is to
them only something some crazy ecologists blubber about, something that they shouldn’t
worried about as they consider themselves supreme beings forgetting that Earth was there long
before humans become dominant force on planet.

We should really be guardians of our planet putting our efforts in order to preserve all life on
planet and we’re doing complete opposite by not only endangering lots of animal species but
endangering our species too.

It is not yet a hopeless case; we could still do something to make our world a better place to live
in… It will be good to familiarize our self with the major problems of our ecosystem, so we
would be aware, not only of our actions but to what is going on with our surroundings as well.
