First Year First Semester

IPE-111 MANUFACTURING PROCESSES - I


3 Hrs/week, 3.00 credits

Classification of manufacturing processes; Casting: casting processes for ferrous and non ferrous
metals, sand, die, centrifugal, slush, plaster mould, loam mould, precision investment casting etc.,
casting defects, design of moulds, riser, runner, gate spur and core, cost analysis; Joining Methods:
soldering, brazing, welding, conventional welding processes, Gas, Arc, TIG, MIG, Termite, resistance,
Friction, Electro slag etc; Special welding processes: LASER, Electron Beam, Submerged Arc
welding etc., Machining Processes: Turning, Drilling, Shaping, Milling, knurling; thread cutting,
surface, grinding. Hot and cold working processes: Hot and cold extrusion, press-working operations
etc. rolling, cold drawing, deep drawing, forging, shearing, bending and press work.

IPE-112 WORKSHOP PRACTICE


3 Hrs/week; 1.50 credits

Study and operation of hand tools that are used in the machine shop. Study of drilling process and
different drilling machines. Study of an engine lathe and its accessories. Study of bench grinding and
various types of grinding stones. Preparation of a hexagonal nut using taps and dies, and hand tools.

Introduction; Instruments and their uses; First and third angle projection; Orthographic drawing;
Sectional views and conventional practices; Auxiliary views; Isometric views; Missing lines and
views.

IPE-116 SEMINAR I

This sessional is about generating the introductory concepts on IPE through class discussion and
presentation. The topics of discussion may include the history of Industrial and Production
Engineering, Its scope and application, different types of production process, productivity, and
optimization etc. After the discussion students will have to present their topics in front of the class.

IPE-121 ENGINEERING MECHANICS


3 Hrs/week; 3.00 credits

Basic concepts of Mechanics: Statics of particles and rigid bodies. Centroids of lines areas and
volumes; Forces in truss, frames and cables; Friction; Moment of inertia of areas and masses; Relative
motion. Kinetics of particles: Newton's second law of motion, Principles of work, energy, impulse,
and momentum; System of particles: Kinematics of rigid bodies; Kinetics of plane motion of rigid
bodies, forces, and acceleration; Principles of work and energy.

IPE-123 ENGINEERING MATERIALS


3 Hrs/week 3.00 credits

Metallic Materials: Concept of malleability, ductility, toughness, fatigue resistance and other
properties, mechanical and non destructive tests of metals. Pig iron: production and uses. Cast iron:
production, types, uses and effects of impurities. Steels: Bessemer and open hearth steel production
and uses; Plain carbon and different types of alloy steels. Bearing metals, light alloys common metals
and their alloys. The Fe-C equilibrium diagram. Different types of Heat treatment processes
(annealing, normalizing quenching etc). Case hardening, carburizing and intruding and induction
hardening. Inspection of metals. Powder Metallurgy. Composite Materials.

IPE-124 MACHINE SHOP PRACTICE


3 Hrs/Week, 1.50 credits

Conduction of Study of various machining operations (turning, drilling, chamfering, knurling, thread
cutting and parting) using engine lathe. Study and operation of turret lathe (including coolant &
lubricating system). Study and operation of shaper machine and quick return motion mechanism
(preparation of a V-block). Study and operation of radial machine and manufacturing an oil hole.
Study and operation of a milling machine and different milling cutters.

IPE-211 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS

Stress Analysis: Statically intermediate axially loaded member, axially loaded member, thermal and
centrifugal stresses, Stresses in thin and thick walled cylinders and spheres. Beams: shear force and
bending moment diagrams. Various types of stresses in beam, Flexure formula, Deflection of beams:
integration and area moment methods, Introduction to reinforced concrete beams and slabs; Riveted
and welded Joints. Torsional formula: Angle of twist, Modules of rapture, helical springs, Combined
stresses, principal stress, Mohr's circle. Columns: Euler's formula, intermediate column formula, the
secant formula; Flexure of curved beams; Thick walled cylinders. Introduction to experimental stress
analysis techniques; strain energy, Failure theories.

IPE-213 THERMODYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER


4 Hrs/week; 4.00 credits

Thermodynamics: Systems, Control volume, Processes etc., Properties of pure substances; First Law
and Second law for system, First and Second Law for Control volume; Psychrometry and its industrial
applications, Vapor power cycle. Study of IC engines: Mechanical and Thermodynamic cycles, valve
timing diagram, fuel systems, lubrication systems, cooling systems Steam generating units: Different
types, accessories, mountings.
Heat transfer: Mode of Heat Transfer, Conduction: general conduction equation, thermal
conductivity’s of solids, liquids and gases; Steady and non-steady state conduction, heat transfer from
finned surfaces Convection: convection heat transfer, laminar and turbulent flow over flat plates and
in pipes. Heat Exchanger: classification, fouling.

IPE-212 ENGINEERING MATERIALS SESSIONAL

Planning and laying out a drawing, Drawing simple 2D objects, Creating Blocks, Organizing

Review of orthographic projections; Fasteners, gears, keys and springs; Sectional views and conventional

energy of reciprocating and rotating parts; Multi-cylinder in-line engines, Balancing machines. Study
of Cams and cam followers. Power transmission by belts ropes and chains, Clutches and brakes; Study
of gears and gear trains. Study of governors. Vibration: Undamped free vibrations with one and two
degrees of freedom; Longitudinal, Transverse and Torsional vibrations, Damped free and forced
vibrations with single degrees of freedom; Vibrations of geared systems.

IPE 223 FLUID MECHANICS AND MACHINERY


3 Hrs/week. 3.00 credits

Fluid properties; Fluid static’s; Manometry; Force on submersed planes and curved surfaces;
Buoyancy and floatation; One-dimensional flow of fluid: Equation of continuity; Energy equation,
Impulse Momentum equation. Pipe flow. Bernoulli equation, Frictional losses in pipes and fittings
(Moody diagram), Pipe Network, Dimensional analysis and Similitude.
Types of fluid machinery, Impulse and Reaction turbine: Centrifugal pumps, Radial and Axial flow
pumps. Reciprocating pumps; Capitation, Compressors.

IPE-225 ERGONOMICS AND INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY

Ergonomics: Characteristic features of man-machine system, Man-machine-material interfaces in


manufacturing, man vs machine- a comparative discussion. work place design principles, organization
of workstations, Anthropometry in workstation design, Physical work and human muscular effort,
Biomechanics and Bioengineering. Manual lifting, Design of hand tools, Design of VDT workstations,
human performance under heat, cold, illumination, noise, static and dynamic conditions. Industrial
Psychology: Definition, nature and scope of psychology; psychology of the individual: socialization;
Psychology of the group: Group formation, types of group, group solidarity and leadership;
psychology of attitudes: beliefs, prejudice, interest and ideologies; psychology of collective behavior:
fashion, propaganda, mass communication, cooperation and conflict; Psychology of cognition: social
stimulus and response, various types of instinct, difference between instinct and habit. Difference

IPE-227 ENGINEERING ECONOMY AND ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES

Engineering economic decisions: types of engineering economic decisions, material and process
selection, equipment replacement, new product and product expansion, cost reduction, service
improvement; Time value of money, present worth analysis, cash flow analysis and depreciation.
Investment: Measuring the worth of investment, evaluation of multiple investment alternatives,
probability concepts for inflation, sensitivity and risk analysis. Application of Engineering
Economy: Aspects of Economy studies for governmental activities. Aspects of economy for

IPE-323 PRODUCTION PLANNING AND CONTROL (PPC)

force management: work standards and methods of work measurement, time study. Method and
Motion Study. The concept of forecasting, forecasting models and their applications; Management of
independent demand and the concept of inventory, EOQ, different types of inventory models (P and
Q), ABC analysis; Capacity and Aggregate planning; Management of dependent demands – concept of
lumpy demand, MRP (including MPS and BOM),MRP and CRP, MRP-II. JIT and waste reduction,
characteristics of JIT (pull flow, quality related issues, small lot sizes, set up time reduction, supplier
related issues), Kanban system, comparison of JIT and MRP. Optimized Production Technology:
concept of bottleneck, 10 rules of OPT, sceduling in OPT. Scheduling in different situations and

of quality characteristics: quality of design conformance and performance, Demings principle on
