COURSE OVERVIEW
Since the United States has emerged and consolidated as the most powerful nation in the world, its
dominance has not just reached the global economy but also political and cultural aspects. The mass media
has played an important role helping to flow the information to all around the world, and it has been
necessary the usage of a universal language; English. Nowadays we figure out that English is everywhere
such as Ads with attractive slogans, film productions, video games, evening shows, music, electronic mail,
websites among others. As a consequence of this phenomenon English is considered the most common and
practical language spoken by a considerable number of people on the Earth. In fact, the learning of English
has become an essential need for the people who work in Science, Technology and Humanities areas and in
their different branches.
This course offers a general knowledge of English; it provides a substantial amount of grammar. The
goal is to offer students strategies to interpret and develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in
the foreign language. We will address different and varied topics. .
Class sessions will involve a combination of lectures, exercises, compositions and discussions. In
addition there will be a couple of films. A basic understanding of basic grammar will help you in the first
part of the course. You should be aware that the course will be work-intensive and intellectually challenging.
Exams and assignments will be graded rigorously. Students will be expected to come to class prepared and
participate actively in class discussions.

ASSIGNMENTS/GRADING
Exams. There will be a Midterm on (03/02,03) worth 40% of your overall course grade, and a Final on
(04/13,14) worth 40% of your overall grade. They will both involve a combination of grammar and
vocabulary; reading and listening comprehension. I will provide sample questions before the exam.
Although there will be a review session before the exam, you should make sure to take careful class notes
throughout the semester. You are required 80% of attendance to have your final grade, and 70% to take the
extraordinary exam (05/11). You are more than welcome to take the Certified Exam on February 13th,
look for details on ads posted in your faculty.

Class Participation. 5% of your grade will be based on the quality and quantity of your contributions to
class. In preparing for class you should look at your notes. I will also award participation credit for
thoughtful comments on course readings and class discussions.
Homework. 5% of your grade will be based on different assignments and tasks.
Oral Exam: 10% of your grade will be based on an individual or group Oral Test.
Lab Sessions. You can complete 10 Lab sessions as an optional activity.

You are required to purchase the book listed below.
Top Noch 2 and the workbook. Joan Saslow. Pearson. USA 2006.
Copies of almost all the other readings on the syllabus will be available at the School supplies store. You should tell
them you want the readings for this course (English 203/ 402) and they will copy them for you.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
You will be expected to attend each class session and arrive ON TIME. Keep in mind that repeated absences
(4 absences, you will be denied to take the Midterm or the Final), or lateness will be negatively affect your
overall course grade, regardless of your performance on other aspects of the course. Please take this warning
seriously. I will take attendance on a regular basis at the beginning of the class. If you have a personal
situation or outside commitment that will force you to miss or arrive late to class regularly, you should
definitely not to be enrolled in this course.

RULES OF ENGLISH CLASS

1) Be on time (4 absences, denied to take the exams). Class is from 7:00 to 8:50.
2) Speak English all the time in class.
3) Bring your material to work (book, workbook, copies)
4) Be enthusiastic, dynamic and polite.
5) Be respectful when the others speak
6) Homeworks (HW) are due at the beginning of class. Late HW won’t be graded.
7) No cell phones
8) No alcohol or drugs and chewing gum
9) No smoking
10) You will be allowed to have a snack or a drink in class.
