Case Study - Power & Patch Management

Newham University Hospital NHS Trust expects to save over 18,500 per year with NightWatchman from 1E
Deployment of advanced PC power management on the Trusts computers will see a reduction of 143 metric tonnes of C02, which equates to 264,552 KWh of electricity and deliver ROI in less than a year!
Newham University Hospital NHS Trust (NUHT), is a 379 bed Acute Trust, which serves one of Britains most diverse, fastest growing and youngest populations. As an organisation, the Trust is firmly focused on meeting the needs and priorities of the local population. The winning London 2012 Olympic Games bid was founded on the sustainable principles of the local community in Newham. Newham University Hospital NHS Trust is ground-breaking amongst NHS organisations for its approach to embracing the sustainability and carbon reduction agenda. It has won national recognition for its work in this area, including being named Greenest Hospital at the Healthcare, Excellence and Leadership (HEAL) 2010 awards.

Solutions Overview
Challenge
Following the deployment of a new software distribution platform, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM), the NHS Trust decided to amplify the potential for further savings by deploying a power and patch management solution.

Solution
Power & Patch Management from 1E was chosen as it was considered the most fit-for-purpose solution.

Harnessing savings from Power & Patch Management

The combined power and patch management solution of NightWatchman version 6.0 and WakeUp from 1E was deployed in June 2010. The 1E solution was considered the most robust and configurable solution for a 24/7/365 patient care environment. Its tight integration with Newham University Hospitals new software distribution platform, Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) added further management benefits and increased the overall efficiency of IT. Power state information from all PCs on which the NightWatchman and WakeUp software was deployed was gathered for a fortnight following the implementation. Collecting power state information involves tracking and recording computer activity as well as the energy usage of each individual PC. NightWatchman uses built-in intelligence to understand the power usage of a single PC based on its specific make and model number - in Newhams case, a combination of Fujitsu Esprimo E5720 and E5730 and Dell GX620 machines. The software also utilises information specific to energy tariffs charged by EDF Energy, the Trusts energy provider, (in this case 0.07 per kWh of electricity), for the most accurate and comprehensive view of power use available on the market today. The information collated was then made visible to the NHS Trust in the form of at-a-glance estimated power and cost savings reports within the NightWatchman console.

Benefit
Projected savings of over 18,500 per year, year on year.

One month in and we were already saving approximately 1,250 per month across just the PCs which had had the agreed power policy applied. In just one year, we stand to save over 18,500 but also reduce our carbon emissions by approximately 143 metric tonnes a year. These savings, coupled with a shift in awareness and behaviour amongst our staff to turn off lights and equipment when not in use, were some of the keystone reasons behind our being awarded the Greenest Hospital 2010 award. Case Study - Power & Patch Management No interruption to 24 hour machines

In a 24 hour patient care environment, it is critical that power policies are not applied to certain PCs such as those used in the Pathology department, those hooked up to x-rays and those located in A&E. The power policies defined by NightWatchman were as such not was not applied to a small number of PCs in the Trust. The total number of such exceptions at the Trust is approximately 60 PCs, or 4% of the total estate.

Profile power usage to drive best savings

A unique power profile was created for the Trust, based on its power profile report. That power policy was then applied to all PCs (with the exception of the identified exclusions). At Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust, a single shutdown policy is applied every day of the week to power off PCs when they are not being used. The first scheduled shutdown is set for 17.15, however, the Trust has configured power management policies to automatically defer if any keyboard or mouse activity has been detected in the previous 35 minutes. Scheduled shutdowns support end-user opt-out (for example, when a user finds him or herself needing to work beyond 17.15) and document back up, to avoid losing any documents that were open at the time of shutdown, to fully empower the end-user, without disrupting productivity. NightWatchman will retry the shutdown throughout the night at 45 minute intervals in order to maximise the opportunity for energy savings. Built-in NightWatchman intelligent reporting and analytics identified that a large number of PC monitors at Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust were being left idle or on standby. A significant saving was made simply by turning these PCs off.

The NightWatchman difference

Prior to deploying NightWatchman & WakeUp and implementing bespoke power policies, PCs at Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust were in the off power state 34% of the time during the week and 45% of the time during weekends. During the course of just two months (June to August 2010), Newham was able to see a 20% increase in the time PCs were powered off and a 12% reduction in time PCs spent in a monitor idle state. The decision to go with 1E was put to our board after having been recommended by Microsoft. Once approved, we worked with 1E Professional Services on the deployment. Using data from the first full calendar month where power policies were applied to a sample number of PCs, the 1E team was able to demonstrate that Newham University Hospitals NHS Trust had already started seeing the benefits of the combined Power and Patch solution, says Shaun Jeffery, ICT Operations Manager at Newham University Hospital NHS Trust. One month in and we were already saving approximately 1,250 per month across just the PCs which had had the agreed power policy applied. In just one year, we stand to save over 18,500 but also reduce our carbon emissions by approximately 143 metric tonnes a year. These savings, coupled with a shift in awareness and behaviour amongst our staff to turn off lights and equipment when not in use, were some of the keystone reasons behind our being awarded the Greenest Hospital 2010 award. he concludes.
