THE CLARENS GOLF AND TROUT ESTATE
At the Clarens Golf and Trout Estate, a round begins at the
stylish clubhouse for both nines, which is at the highest point

mountains. All of the 18 holes meander along and across the
tranquil river and its splendid series of trout dams, waterfalls and

mountaineering, fishing, game drives and hiking.
Sandstone Mountains of cliffs & large boulders have rock
climbers spoilt for choice. The drive through the passes is
breathtaking & the monumental aggression on the appearances
of these weather-carved backdrops has one spellbound in the
face of creation.
On the neighboring borders of the town, one becomes drawn
even closer to nature by simply parking your car & traveling
around on horse back as was done when Bethlehem was
founded.
The Jordan River meanders right through the town where
Pretoriuskloof nature reserve offers lovely walks alongside the
rive banks amidst Willow trees & towering krantz’s.
The Wolhuterskop Game & Nature Reserve is on the outskirts
of the town where an abundance of wildlife grazes on the rolling
hills & under shady pine trees. Whether you’re game viewing by
car or following the hiking trail (with a stay in overnight hut),
you will see large numbers of Zebras, Rooihartebees, Eland,
Springbuck, Black Wildebeest & many other antelope species.

CLARENS SURRENDER HILL MARATHON
The Surrender Hill Marathon is a qualifying race for Two Oceans
Marathon in the and the Comrades Marathon. The next race
takes place on Saturday, 6 March 2010.
CLOCOLAN VINTAGE TRACTOR FAIR
Every year since 1989 a Vintage Tractor and Engine Fair has been
held in the village of Clocolan, in the scenic Eastern Free State
Highlands. Tractors are sent from as far afield as Natal and the
Fair has grown from just 29 tractors in 1989 to 153 in recent
years. Thursday opens the events with judging of all classes and
best of show.
A parade through the streets of the village on the Friday creates
a carnival like atmosphere, whilst such wondrous events as
the firing up of the 1902 threshing machine in readiness for a
working demonstration makes for an unforgettable experience.
The National Ploughing Championships are held each year
at Clocolan during this Fair, and are a must see, with these
wonderful machines of a by-gone era puffing and panting to the
finish line amidst much laughter, excitement and cheering.
Don’t miss the hand plowing with a team of magnificent Nguni
bulls. These spectacular beasts are well worth the visit all on
their own! There are stalls, horse riding, gymkhana, bars and
pubs and on Saturday night party time in the Showground Hall
with live music and much carousing. This fair takes place every
year, the first weekend of March.

FOURIESBURG ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL
The Asparagus Festival takes place every year on the last
weekend of September. Originating from an agricultural festival
in the Fouriesburg area, the Asparagus Festival officially came to
life in 1996. All aspects of asparagus, such as growing, planting,
preparing and cooking methods will be displayed as well as
some agricultural aspects with a small farmyard for children and
a ‘gaiters’ competition.
Stallholders from all over the country participate in the show.
There is a competition for the best bottled products, baking,
needlework, soapmaking, knitting, crochet etc - arguably the
only of its kind still in operation in the Free State. Visitors are
also entertained by well-known artists and at the same time they
can enjoy Fouriesburg’s unique beauty and views of the Maluti
Mountains.
