 THEME OF THE SEMINAR
Geospatial technologies are becoming increas-
ingly useful and widespread in the present
knowledge and information based society. It is a
rapidly evolving field of technology providing
powerful tools to integrate information, visualize
scenarios and create maps, solve complicated
problems and develop effective solutions and
add value to spatial data. The components of
geospatial technology are Remote Sensing, Geo-
graphical Information Systems and GPS. These
technologies in the last two decades have trans-
formed geographical research more into applica-
tion studies and thereby widened the scope of
geographical research and teaching and also
made geography more scientific and technical.
Moreover the unlimited value of this growing
technology in the allied scientific fields, indus-
tries and planning departments have market de-
mand for trained personnel in geospatial technol-
ogy.
More recently, GIS and Remote Sensing is
also introduced as a component in one of the pa-
pers in geography at undergraduate level in al-
most all colleges of the country. However, the
teachers are not adequately trained and well
versed to teach this subject. In view of this the
Department is conducting a 2 days seminar on
“Applications of Geospatial Technology in
Teaching and Research” from 27th to 28th Feb-
ruary, 2011. Experts from GIS and Remote
Sensing fields are invited to deliberate their ex-
perience and knowledge in the seminar. The
Seminar is open to all geography teachers.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
RKMV Shimla is a premier institution of
women education in North India. It is the only
Govt. Girls College in Himachal Pradesh. It
came into being in 1977 when the erstwhile
RPCSDB College (estd. 1945) was taken over
by the H.P. Govt. and converted into an all-girls
College. From 919 students on its rolls in 1978,
the number increased to 4000 students today.
The institution offers Bachelor's Degrees in
three mainstreams of studies: Humanities, Sci-
ence and Commerce and Computer Application.
Besides continuing with the Honours' Course in
English, Physical Education has also been in-
cluded as a course of study in B.A., which be-
gan in the last lap of the last session. Sandhya
Sangeet Mahavidyalaya (affiliated to the pres-
tigious Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth
(Luckhnow) conducts a graduate level course in
classical music and a post-graduate level course
in the Classical Dance, as also hobby classes in
Music and Dance for the general public. The
College is situated on Elysium Hill, so named in
1838 after Lord Auckland's sister. Elysium is
Greek term meaning "a delightful place" and
immensely suits the location as it stands amidst
rolling hills, emerald valleys and the distant
snow-peaks. The college is a ten-minute walk
from the famous 'Ridge' and can also be reached
by local buses plying on the circular Cart Road
