COURSE OBJECTIVES: To make the students in understanding the basics and application of spectroscopy.

equilibria of two component system- Pb-Ag system.

4 Kinetics and catalysis: Rate of a reaction, order and molecularity of a reaction, Rate constants for a
first order and second order reactions

5 Activated state theory, Energy of activation, effect of catalyst

7 Basic concepts of UV-Visible spectroscopy: Lambert Beer’s Law, electronic transitions,


instrumentation for UV, chromophores and auxochromophores, general applications. Basic concepts
of Infrared spectroscopy: Instrumentation, molecular vibrations, degrees of freedom, general
applications.
8 Basic concepts of Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR): Theory, instrumentation, chemical shifts,
general applications
9 Solids and Crystal structure: Types of solids, crystalline and amorphous solids, Structure of solids,
Fundamental laws of crystal structure. X-rays and crystal structure, Bragg’s law, types of imperfections

10 Basic concepts of polymers: Introduction, mechanisms of condensation and addition polymers with
examples. Properties and applications of polymers ( Polyesters, Polystyrene, Urea formaldehyde)
