FOREWARD
A variety of difficulties attend an endeavor such as this, some greater and some niggling. The
greatest one is certainly lack of access to the original source material (I know that some people
have indeed managed to obtain copies from the British Museum, but I’m not one of them).
Another would be the lack of consistency in the versions of the source material that is available.
Finally, some of the other issues include lack of consistency on the part of Dee or even the Angels
themselves, as well as a lack of guidance in some areas, such as punctuation.
I have used Causabon’s A True & Faithful Relation… (‘TFR’) as my source for the Calls. For the
Calls not included in that work, I have added them by comparing the versions provided by the
Golden Dawn, Aurum Solis, Geoffrey James, and Ben Rowe;
While Dee included notes on pronunciation for some words, they are not complete. Any attempt
to find consistency is frustrating, and it is impossible to know to what extent assumptions ought
to be made based on how 16 th Century upperclass English was pronounced in the London area.
Consequently, I have used Dee’s indications where available, and, frankly, guessed or used what
felt most natural to me where necessary. As it was not possible to indicate where a pronunciation
choice was made based on one or the other criterion, I leave it to the reader for whom this might
be an issue to refer to either the source material or my earlier Essay on Pronunciation for Dee’s
notes. I have included a rough guide to pronunciation after this Foreword. Another choice would
be that provided by Donald Laycock in his Dictionary. It should also be noted that there is no
guide to punctuation in the original (other than some cryptic notes about stops and strokes that
don’t seem to translate into what we would consider punctuation), and one suspects that it might
be a foreign concept to a language of spiritual beings; for this reason, I have generally followed
what seems a logical flow based on the English translation.
Finally, while the arguments are outside the scope of this paper, it should be noted that there are
grammatical inconsistencies in the originals of the Calls, particularly between the words of the
Calls as given, and the translations provided to Dee by the Angels. A full version is offered by the
late Ben Rowe (“Josh Norton”) at http://w3.one.net/~browe/pdf/calls2.pdf.
Comments and suggestions on any aspect of this paper are welcome.

PRONUNCIATION KEY (Enochian)
A as in “father”, except “ag” rhymes with “nag”
C as k before a, o, u (some exceptions)
as s before i, e (some exceptions)
E stressed: as in “obey”
unstressed: as in “beg” (some exceptions)
G as (hard) g before a, o, u
usually as j before i, e, and wordfinal, occasionally in other places, some exceptions
H usually as h, except in combinations (ch, ph, sh, th); either silent or slightly aspirated in
certain locations (eg: Comselh). This last does not apply to the phonetic notation that
follows: duh’loo’gah (dluga) does not end with an aspirated sound. Occasionally gutteral as
in German “Ach” or in Gaelic.
I stressed: as in “machine”
unstressed: as in “pill”
I, J as y or jh (“ge” as in “garage”) in initial position and before a vowel
O stressed: as in “go”
unstressed: as in “go” or as in “pot”, especially in ‘och’ (rhymes with “botch”)
Q,Qu as “kuh”, or “kwuh” (as in “quick”)
U usually as in “rule,” but occasionally as in “mug”
in initial position may be pronounced as “yew”
X as in “fox”
Y usually as under key for I and I,J
Z as in “zoo”; in a very few words, as “zod”
CH as k in most positions, but ‘”och” rhymes with “botch”
PH as in “rough”
SH as in “fish”
TH as in “think”
Double vowels should be pronounced only partly separately, with an elided pause between
them: QAA becomes Kuh’ah’ah, with only the barest hesitation.
PRONUNCIATION KEY (Phonetic)
All transliterations are in single syllables. For instance, “purj” would be pronounced like the
English word “purge,” where “pur’ge” would be pronounced like “purr geh,” in two syllables.
An “h” after a vowel indicates the length of the vowel – short for “ah” and “uh,” long for
“oh” – and is not voiced. “Goh’hoh” is pronounced like the English words “go” + “hoe” and
“hohl’doh” is pronounced like English “hole” + “doe.”
The “^” symbol indicates a sound more implied than voiced, like the barely voiced sound
after the “d” in “It was programmed.”
Stresses, where indicated in Dee’s notes, have been indicated with bold text.
ah short a, as in “latte” or “cot” – note that the “h” is not pronounced
ay long a, as in “page”
e short e, as in “let”
ee long e, as in “meet”
i, ih short i, as in “kit”
oh long o, as in “old” – note that the “h” is not pronounced
o short o, as in “hot”
oo double o, as in “groove”
u, uh short u, as in “cup” – note that the “h” is not pronounced
yu “yoo”, as in “yule”
^ a sound more implied than voiced, like the sound after the “d” in “It was programmed.”
b as in “bud”
d as in “dog”
f as in “fish”
g as in “golf”
h as in “hat”
j as in “jam”
k as in “kiss”
kh gutteral sound as in German “Ach”
l as in “lamp”
m as in “moon”
n as in “now”
p as in “pet”
r as in “rim”
s as in “soft” – even at the end of a word (i.e., NOT like the “z” sound in “has”)
t as in “tin”
v as in “vine”
w as in “wet”
y as in “yes”
z as in “zebra”
ng as in “song”
sh as in “show”
th as in “think”

breath; the rest are as sharp sickles, of the horns of death, wherein the creatures of the earth are and are
not, except mine own hands, which also sleep and shall rise. In the first I made you stewards and placed you
in twelve seats of government, giving unto every one of you power successively over 456, the true ages of
time, to the intent that from the highest vessels and the corners of your government, you might work my
power: pouring down the fires of life and increase continually on the earth. Thus you are become the skirts of
justice and truth. In the name of the same your God, lift up, I say, yourselves. Behold His mercies flourish,
and His Name is become mighty amongst us. In Whom we say: Move, descend, and apply yourselves unto us,

with a loud voice: Come away! And they gathered themselves together and became the house of death, Of
whom it is measured, and it is as they are whose number is 31. Come away, For I have prepared for you.

0 you heavens which dwell in the (name of Æthyr) are mighty in the parts of the earth, and execute the
judgment of the Highest! To you it is said: Behold the face of your God, the beginning of comfort, Whose eyes
are the brightness of the heavens. Which provided you for the government of the earth and her unspeakable
variety, furnishing you with a power of understanding to dispose all things according to the providence of Him
that sits on the Holy Throne, and Who rose up in the beginning, saying: the earth, let her be governed by her
parts, and let there be division in her, that the glory of her may be always drunken and vexed in itself. The
her course, let it run with the heavens, and as a handmaid let her serve them. One season let it confound
another, and let there be no creature upon or within her the same. All her members, let them differ in their
qualities, and let there be no one creature equal with another. The reasonable creatures of the earth (i.e.,
Man), let them vex and week out one another, and the dwelling places, let them forget their names. The
works of man and his pomp, let them be defaced; his buildings, let them become caves for the beasts of the
field. Confound the understanding of her with darkness. For why? It repenteth me that I made man. One
while let her be known, and another while a stranger; because she is the bed of an harlot, and the dwelling
place of himthatisfallen. 0 you heavens, arise! The lower heavens underneath you, let them serve you.
Govern those that govern; cast down such as fall; bring forth with those that increase, and destroy the rotten!
No place let it remain in one number; add and diminish until the stars be numbered. Arise, move, and appear
before the covenant of His mouth, which He has sworn unto us in His justice. Open the mysteries of your
creation, and make us partakers of undefiled knowledge.
