How to maximize your Social Security benefits

lifetime of hard work and income
tax, you probably want to get the
most out of your social security
dollars.
Fortunately, social security
is flexible enough to accommo-
date different circumstances. And
knowing your different options is
the first step to finding what plan
will work best for you and your
family.
What To

early at age 62. And while you
can continue working while col-
lecting, your benefits may be
reduced by up to 30 percent.
Some of your benefits can be
withheld if you have extra earn-
ings, but after you reach the full
retirement age, the SSA will re-
calculate your benefit amount to
give you credit for any months for
which you did not receive benefits.
In this tough economy, collecting
early may be a desirable option
for seniors unable to find work
but still able and willing to work
in the future.

The first step you’ll need to
take in order to make an informed
decision is to find out how much
money you’ll receive in a couple of
different scenarios. Your benefits
will vary not only according to
your age and salary, but also de-
pending on whether you start col-
lecting early, collect while work-
ing, receive spousal payments,
or suspend your payments until
you’re 70.
You also want to consider your
overall health and other retire-
ment or pension plans you have.

While the full retirement age
for most Americans is 67, most

GIRL SCOUTS ATTEND COOKIE RALLY

Girl Scouts from Newaygo and White Cloud got
together for their annual Cookie Rally and sleepover.
Forty Nine (49) registered Girl Scouts, eleven (11) lead-
ers, and a couple of future Girls Scouts met at JDJ El-
ementary School in White Cloud on a Friday evening in
January for this annual event. They held a Cookie Rally
which included eating cookies, watching a movie (with
popcorn of course), and then slept overnight in the gym.
Saturday morning all were served breakfast prepared by
Troop 500. They all had a great time and can’t wait un-
til next January to do it again!!
Girl Scouts of Michigan Shore to Shore serves more
than 17,000 girls, ages 5 - 17, in 30 counties in north-
ern and western Michigan. With the support of more
than 4,500 committed volunteers and 45 qualified staff
members, girls develop qualities that will serve them all
their lives, such as leadership, strong values, social con-
science, and conviction about their own potential and
self-worth.

Montcalm Coalition to Prevent Underage drinking
(MCPUD) Announces Multimedia Contest winners at

123 Placed 3rd in Klondike Derby
Saturday Feb. 5, the annual Five
Rivers District Klondike Derby was
held at
Klackels Orchard Farm Market
in Greenville. Morley ~ Stanwood
Boy Scout Troop 123 Flaming Grif-
fins Patrol participating in the event
for the very first time, walked away
with third place. The event is fun
way of testing the scouts in the
many skills that the BSA program
offers. Fire building, first aid, ori-
enteering, cooking, knot and lash
tying were some of the events the
scouts were judged. Twenty Boy
Scout Troops in the Five Rivers Dis-
trict with equipment loaded Klond-
ike sleds participated in the Coarse
B event. Coarse A was for more
advanced Patrols.
The Morley ~ Stanwood Boy
Scout Troop 123 meets every Tues-
day evening at 6:30 p.m. at the
Stanwood Free Methodist Church
in Stanwood under the direction of
Scout Master Mike Newhall.

Sculpture Park, Grand Rapids.

United Hospital Emergency
Department in Greenville.
The mission of the Charity
Ball is to financially support
the continuation, strengthen-
ing, and enhancement of criti-
cal services Spectrum Health
United Hospital provides to pa-
tients and their families in our
community. “We are always
delighted when we can make
an impact on the health of peo-
ple in our communities. This
event will support critical new
technology in the Emergency
Department to help make that
happen,” said Rocky Hansen,

Health United Memorial Foun-

Charity Ball Committee has
planned a silent and live auc-
tion with over 50 extraordinary

GERD Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
A reader asked some questions about acid reflux. Let me begin with how we are put together. The esophagus is a muscular
tube that delivers food from the mouth through the chest cavity to the stomach. It enters the abdominal cavity using an
opening called the diaphragmatic hiatus (that is where the term hiatal hernia comes from). This opening acts like a valve to
prevent back-wash of food and liquid up into the esophagus. When we eat, a surge of hydrochloric acid is released. This acid
is needed to convert the pre-enzyme pepsinogen into pepsin which then is used to reduce protein into poly-peptides which
later are broken down into peptides, then to amino acids which we can use. The lining of the stomach is covered with a layer
of mucus to protect it from the stomach acid. During the acid surge, the stomach acidity is similar to battery acid. The lining
of the esophagus does not have the protective mucus lining. Acidic stomach juice refluxing back up into the unprotected
esophagus is what causes most of the problems with GERD.
Causes of GERD may be hereditary with a genetically weak valve or weak esophageal muscles, but mostly, however, it is
mechanical. Coughing will intermittently push the stomach up through the hiatus, stretching and weakening the valve action of
the hiatus. A big belly will mechanically push the stomach up through the hiatus when lying down or bending over. If your meal
is too large, there will not be enough enzymes to pre-digest all the protein and some of it will begin to putrefy causing gas.
This will create back pressure on the hiatus, pushing liquids up into the esophagus. Gas forming yeast and bacteria may also be
a contributing factor. Nicotine, Caffeine, Alcohol, and Stress all cause acid production when no food is present, contributing
to this problem.
Some people with GERD, especially the older crowd, actually do not have enough acid. You can test this by taking a
teaspoon of distilled apple cider vinegar at the beginning of a meal. If it helps the reflux then you need to add acid. Use Betine
HCl prior to the meal to increase acid. If vinegar makes you feel worse, then you have too much acid.
Blocking stomach acid with the purple pill and other proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) are not very healthy, long term. (The
manufacturers recommend a maximum of 28 days.) If you must take these, take them at bedtime to
prevent night time acid production and allow some day time acid for food digestion.
The Blood Type Diet and/or elimination of all dairy products have been helpful for most people.
Try this for two weeks. Then challenge to see what happens. Reduce the quantity of food in a meal.
Avoid grazing all day long. To heal esophagitis, Alovera juice has been miraculous in many cases
(one teaspoon, undiluted, four times per day). Probiotics (acidophilus) have been a great help to
reduce gas forming yeast. Fiber and activated charcoal absorb toxins in the food that may be causing
problems. Herbal Slippery Elm is very cooling for a hot digestive tract. Propping the head of your bed
up four inches uses gravity to prevent back-wash at night. Reducing the size of your waist reduces
mechanical pressure. Using the heel drop technique or abdominal massage can bring the stomach
back into the abdominal cavity if you have a hiatal hernia.
