INDUSTRIAL TRAINING SCHEME IN

THE FACULTY OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING, UTM

1. Industrial Training Course

Industrial Training Program is a compulsory component of the undergraduate curriculum

at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. The Industrial Training committee is responsible
for coordinating the training program activities. The Industrial Training website
(http://www.fke.utm.my/li) is provided by the faculty to facilitate the students and the
committee in processing the applications and placements of training. Placements at the
participating industries are structured for undergraduates in the third semester of their
third year study. Undergraduates have to undergo the industrial training for a period of
at least 10 weeks. The numbers of credits awarded in the industrial training program are
5 credits for onsite training and technical report written. Undergraduates are expected to
acquire hands on experience not only in the engineering aspects of work, but also to
other related matters such as administration, accounting, management, safety etc.
during the industrial training period.

The objective of the industrial training is to provide the students with the opportunity to
practice and apply knowledge and skills in various actual working environments. For the
outcomes, after undergoing the training, the student who successfully fulfills the course
requirements will have demonstrated:

a) An ability to work in actual working environment.

b) An ability to utilize technical resources both from prior relevant coursework, as
well as from sources students must seek out on their own.
c) An ability to write technical documents and give oral presentations related to
the work completed.

The industries where the students are attached to during their training as listed in the
supporting document (LI-CL). These industries cover all areas in electrical engineering
such as communications, electronics, power, control system, computer engineering and
networking. The nature of jobs involved in the training includes designing,
manufacturing, testing, maintaining, fabricating and etc.

2. Assessment of Industrial Training

The course outcomes (CO) of the industrial training are assessed based on the program
outcome (PO) which are related to COs. Table 2.1 shows the mapping of COs to the POs
and Table 2.2 shows the assessment carried out to measure the POs as well as to
indicate the points in the program where students are given the opportunity to be
introduced to, become familiar with, and master the program outcomes.

Levels:
xxx : Students are expected to master the concepts related to the program outcome.
xx : Students become familiar with the concepts related to the program outcome.
x : Students are introduced to concepts related to the program outcome.

The assessment of the undergraduates in the industrial training program is as follows:

1. Onsite Training
Assessment from industry = 40%
Assessment from visiting lecturer = 20%
Log book = 20%
2. Technical Report = 20%

Undergraduates have to score a minimum 60% of the total marks to pass this program.
However the marks do not contribute to the calculation of CPA or GPA during the
undergraduate study. The status HL (passed attendance) or HG (failed attendance) will
be given in the final assessment.

Reports from the industries are used to evaluate the students’ performance in order to
study the achievement of the course objectives. On top of that, the students are asked to
give some feedbacks (FKE-LP7) on the experience obtained of the training. These
observations and evaluations are vital in this learning process to assist the students in
further development and future work experiences.

The overall assessment by the industries of the student performance covers the following
aspects;

a) The ability to achieve competitive positions or entry into program/areas of their

interest.
b) Competent and productive in engineering and related practice.
c) The ability to develop professionally through industrial experience and practice life-
long learning.
d) The ability to communicate and lead effectively.
e) Practices high standards of ethical conduct and societal responsibilities.

3. Procedures/Guidelines of Industrial Training

The industrial training course formally integrates a student's university education with
work experience in co-operating employer organizations. The course provides full-time
undergraduate students who have successfully completed three years of the Bachelor of
Electrical Engineering program. The complete procedure for conducting the industrial
training course is shown by the flowchart of Figure 3.1. Qualified students take part in an
application/interview process; the company makes the final selection and offers the
training placement through the faculty industrial training committee. Guidelines for
industrial training scheme consists of three phases, as followed:

Phase One - This phase involves the briefing to the students by the committee on the
objectives of the course, pre-registration process as well as the procedures on how to
apply for industrial training placement. A database consisting of relevant public and
private sectors/industries have been developed to facilitate the students and the
committee in processing the applications and placements of training. Placements at the
participating industries are structured for undergraduates in the third semester of their
third year study. This database is placed at faculty industrial training website
(http://www.fke.utm.my/li) and could be accessed by the registered students and the
coordinators. The website is developed to provide some useful information regarding on
the training procedures as well as to inform the students on any important and latest
announcement. The final briefing will be conducted for the students who have
successfully getting the training placement two weeks before the training starts. In this
phase, the students are required to submit the FKE-LP1 form.

Phase Two – The second phase begins with the students reporting and start undergoing
the training at the related training organization. The students are given two weeks to
return a form of FKE-LP2. This form gives the information on the training location as well
as the industrial’s supervisor name whose is responsible to monitor and supervise the

student. Besides supervising the students’ work, the industrial supervisors are requested
to certify records of daily activities written in the students’ log-book. The students are
also to fill-in the training schedule form (FKE-LP3) through a discussion with the
industrial supervisor. During the training, the students’ performances are assessed by the
industrial supervisor based on work performance and personality (FKE-LP4 form). The
work performance covers the knowledge on work assigned, quality of work process,
creative and innovative and ability to meet work deadline. The personality of the
students is assessed based on the dedication, cooperativeness, discipline,
competitiveness, communication skills, decision-making skills, sincerity and honesty.

The appointed lecturers usually visit the work site during the probationary period. The
visit is scheduled at a time convenient for the student and industry. The purpose of the
meeting is to assess how the internship is going from both the student’s and supervisor’s
points of view. The on-site visit is an informal meeting that lasts about one hour. Tours
of the work site and the viewing of student projects/tasks can be part of the on-site visit.
For students placed in remote areas, it can be difficult to have a visit. In these cases, the
monitoring and assessment may be done through a telephone call or via e-mail.

Phase Three – Upon completion of the industrial training, students are required to
submit industrial training report for a part of the assessment components. The criteria
that need to be assessed from the report written are stated in the form of FKE-LP6. The
total marks obtained by a student are recorded in FKE-LP5 form. The industrial training
committee will compile the data of the students’ performances for the purpose of
analyzing the outcomes of the industrial training course. The report that describes the
students’ performances and industry feedbacks will be submitted to the faculty
management for further action and continuous improvement.
