A PROFILE OF VISAKHAPATNAM STEEL PLANT

VIZAG STEEL also know as visakhapatnam steel plant is the only steel company in the outskirts of
Visakhapatnam india. The foundation stone was laid by the former prime minister smt indira Gandhi
which helped in cherishing the long draw dreams of the people of Andhra Pradesh and in particular
Visakhapatnam . the plant has established itself high standards both in productivity and technology .it is
among india’s premier steel mills in india and also been conferredthe mini ratna statis .its vision –
infrastructuring india.

Visakhapatnam steel plant achieved its excellence because of its dedication to


certain established ethical values in everything

Principles which are being followed here are:

New technology ,large scale computerization and automation etc ,are incorporated in the plant
at the international levels to labour productivity comparable with international standards ,the
organizational man power has been rationalized.the plant has the capacity of producing 3.2 million
tones of liquid steel and 2.56million tones of sailable steel

MAJOR SECTIONS OF STEEL PLANT(DEPARTMENTS):
COKE OVEN:

This is the first department of plant located 9km away from the entrance.production process
commences here.the raw materials like coal etc is brought in vagons and dumped in to the ovens.the
ovens are maintained at 1200-1800degreee Celsius temperature.the dumped coal is kept in the oven
chambers for 18hrs after which coal is converted to coke which is the major output of this
department.there are also subproducts like BENZOLENE,AMMONIUM SULPHATE,TAR etc.coke from here
is supplied as input to other departments for further processing to produce steel the final output

SINTERPLANT:

this is the department that comes next in the production process after cokeoven.there are two sinter
machines each of 312SQMTS gate area here ironore fines,coke,benzene,limestone,dollamite are mixed
together to form a mixture mass called as GROSS SINTER which is used in blast furnance as a primary
input.the annual production capacity is 5.256million tones.

BLAST FURNACE:

there are two blast furnaces named KRISHNA AND GODAVARI.each furnce has 3200cubic mts usefull in
volume.here hot metal is produced from the raw materials like ironore,sinter,coke,limestone etc.the
annual capacity is 3.4milliontones.from the molten hot iron known as pig iron STEEL is produced

STEEL MELTING SHOP:

there are three num’s of LD converters each of 133cubic mts usefull volume with a capacity to produce
3million tones of liquid steel.the production capacity of the plant is it’s capacity to produce liquis
steel.vsp is a 3million tone plant.sms also has 6numbered of 4standard continous casting machines to
produce blooms.2.82million tones of blooms can be casted annually.in this shop hot metal from BF is
received in the mixture kept for the temporary storage and transferred to converters where charging
takes place in presence of 99.5%of pure oxygen.after argon rinsing,the molten steel is moved to 6
standard continuos casting machines.blooms are formed from the input materials for the mills.blooms
are taken as input to small steel making industry

ROLLING MILLS:

this is the last department of production.there are 3 rolling mills

 Light and medium merchant mills:-it includes bar mills and billet mills has an annual capacity of
1.85million tones of billets and 7.1million tones of bars and structures
 Wire rod mills:-it is a high speed 4 standard continuos mill.the mill is designed to produce wire
rods in plane rounds and ribbon bars. It has an annual capacity of 0.8 million tones
 Medium and merchant mills:-this mill produces squares,flat,channels,angles,ets.., has an annual
capacity of 0.85 million tones of bars and structures
MAIN PRODUCTS OF VSP:
Steel products:-angles,billets,channels,beams,squares,flats,rounds,bars,wire rods

BYPRODUCTS OF VSP:
Nut coke,coal dust,coal tar,benzolene,wash oil,limefines,ammonium sulphate,naphthalence,hp,toluene
etc.
