Valeria’s Story:
When the enemy comes in like a flood
Miracles come in all shapes and sizes … and modes of delivery as it turns
out. Twenty-four-year-old Valeria Jardim found that out the hard way after she
was hit by a delivery truck while commuting to work on her bicycle. Six hours later, as
she lay sprawled across the only two vacant chairs in one of Sao Paulo’s overcrowded
emergency rooms—her body wracked with excruciating pain—she was more than ready to
petition God for her own private miracle.
Not that Valeria wasn’t grateful to be alive—she was. But it’s hard to be completely thankful when
your situation is so bleak! After all, not only had her sole mode of transportation to work—a brand
new bicycle—been converted to a gnarled lump of steel and chrome, she was also broke … dead
broke. And it was pretty obvious she wouldn’t be able to return to work anytime soon. On top of
that she had no “familia” and few friends she could count on to give her the comfort and hope she
so desperately needed.
“God! Why is this happening to me … here I am having to wait and wait—in horrible pain,
because I can’t even afford to have a private doctor!” She cried out to God—no longer even trying
to hold back the tears that now ran freely down her face.
Before Valeria could even finish her prayer of desperation, she felt a buzzing sensation on her
leg. It was her cell phone, indicating she had a message. As she looked down at her screen, there
it was … in tiny little letters was God’s answer: “All things work together for good for those who
are called according to His purpose” the text message read.
It was enough … enough to keep Valeria from going over the edge, enough for her to realize one
inconvertible fact: God knew. God cared. And out of this ugly mess He would end up redeeming
for good what the enemy meant for evil; He had given her a future and a hope
and His plans for her were for good … even if she couldn’t quite see it yet.
