ADMISSION NOTICE - 2008-09

Ports have always played a vital role in the trade and commerce of the country
from time immemorial. This is more so now in this era of economic liberalisation.
To meet the increasing demands for imports and exports, there is a need for
revitalising the administration of ports. Gujarat has about 41 ports along its 1600 km
long coastline. There are also other ports on India’s vast coastline requiring trained
manpower for their efficient administration. Gujarat University has taken the
initiative to start a programme specially tailored to suit the needs of the port sector.
The programme was started from the academic year 2006-07. The first two-year
batch is about to graduate and the placements have been very encouraging.

PARTICULARS OF THE COURSE

2 Duration Two years under semester system
3 Eligibility A degree from a recognized University in
Engineering/Science/Commerce (BE/B.Sc./B.Com
/BBA/BCA) streams with a minimum of 55% marks
(the grand total of marks shown in the final year mark
sheet of graduation will be considered for this purpose)
– 50% for candidates belonging to SC/ST.
4 No. of seats 1) There are two categories of seats: Merit seats (15
seats) and sponsored candidates (15 seats). These 30
seats will be filled up as under:
B.Sc /B.E. : 20
B.Com./BBA/BCA : 10
The unfilled seats of sponsored candidates will be filled
up from merit candidates.
2) Besides the above, 2 supernumerary seats will be
filled be filled up through bona fide NRI candidates.
5 Sponsorship of Institutions such as ports or institutions undertaking
candidates activities connected with ports can sponsor candidates
against the 15 sponsored seats. Further, the interested
candidates also get themselves sponsored by the eligible
institutions against these seats.
6 Reservation of seats As per Gujarat University rules (for merit seats only)
7 Location The programme is being conducted in the B.K. School
of Business Management, Gujarat University.
8 Course Fees Merit seats : Rs.10,000/- per semester
(Subject to change) Sponsored seats: Rs.20,000/- per semester
NRI seats : Rs. 25,000/- per semester
9 Faculty for the course The management courses will be taught by the B.K.
School and other faculty members of Gujarat
University/visiting faculty. The port-related and other
specialised subjects/modules will be taught by experts
from the field.
10 Admission process 1) The merit seats will be filled up through the merit
position of the candidates in the GCET (Gujarat
Common Entrance Test) for admission to the MBA
Programmes of Universities of Gujarat.
2) For sponsored seats the admission will be based on
the inter-se merit position based on graduation marks of
the applicants.

HOW TO APPLY
The admission to the merit seats in the programme for the year 2008-09, will be
based on the rank obtained in the GCET 2008 for MBA, being conducted by the
GCET Admission Committee (Sardar Patel University, V.V.Nagar). The
advertisement for the same had appeared in major newspapers of Gujarat State on
June 23, 2008. The particulars can also be seen from Sardar Patel University
website: http://www.spuvvn.edu. The last date for submission of application for
GCET 2008 is July 14, 2008.
The interested candidates for merit seats of the Port Management Programme
should take the GCET 2008 test and the GDPI and should find a place in the
GCET merit list. Besides, they should also fill up the attached application form
for admission to the Port Management Programme. The application form should
be downloaded from the website and the duly filled in applications, along with an
application fee of Rs.200/- (non-refundable), in cash or demand draft drawn in
favour of “Registrar, Gujarat University” and payable at Ahmedabad, should be
submitted in person or through registered post to the B.K. School of Business
Management, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad 380009 (phone: 079-26304811)
latest by August 25, 2008. NRI applicants may submit their applications
latest by August 30, 2008.
As soon as the GCET 2008 merit position is announced (around August 11, 2008)
by the GCET authorities, the applicants should immediately inform their merit
position to the B.K. School of Business Management. The names of candidates
short listed for admission will be put up on the notice board of B.K. School on
August 26, 2008 and also the Gujarat University website:
www.gujaratuniversity.org.in. No written personal communication will be sent.

Guidelines to fill up the application form:

1. Candidates who have appeared for the final year/semester examination can also
apply. The applicants, whose result of final year/semester is declared after
submission of the application, are required to send the result as soon as the same are
announced.

2. List of enclosures to be attached are as under. Incomplete forms are liable to be


cancelled. The document shall be duly self-attested.

i. All the Mark sheets and certificates of passing (up to graduation).


ii. Certificate of experience gained after graduation (if any)
iii. Caste certificate (for SC/ST/SEBC) from competent authority of Gujarat
Govt.
iv. Non-Creamy Layer Certificate issued after April 1, 2008 for SEBC
applicants.
v. Letter of sponsorship and MoU (if not already entered into) from the
sponsoring institution in the case of sponsored candidates.
vi. For NRI student: proof of residence and documentary evidence of NRI.

3. All original documents and the fee should be brought at the time of
counselling/admission, without which admission will not be given. No extension of
time for the purpose will be given and those who fail to do so, their seats will be
allocated to the next eligible person in the merit list.
4. The admitted candidate will also have to make a course deposit of Rs.2,000/- over
and above the course semester fee at the time of admission.
5. The sponsored candidates will have to deposit the entire course fee at the time of
counselling/admission, along with the course deposit of Rs.2,000.
6. An applicant who withdraws from the programme within 15 days of the
commencement of the course will be refunded 50% of the fee paid. No refund
will be made to candidates withdrawing from the programme after the above
programme.
7. The decision of the University on above matters matter will be final and
binding on all concerned.

PROCEDURE FOR SPONSORING CANDIDATES
(i) Application: Each candidate desirous of admission to the programme through
sponsorship should preferably also take the GCET 2008 test and submit the
application form as stated earlier. Further, the applicant should also submit a letter of
sponsorship from the sponsoring institution at the time of application or latest by
August 25, 2008 along with the full course fees.
(ii) Eligibility: Any institution associated directly or indirectly with the business of Ports
and/or shipping which is likely to employ the candidate on successful completion of
the PGPPM course can sponsor the candidate for the course. The institution should
be approved by the Gujarat University by entering into a memorandum of
understanding (MoU).
(iii) Procedure: The institution should enter into an MOU in support of the candidate
with the Gujarat University on the lines of the draft attached with/without
modification.

(iv) The institution should also forward the sponsorship letter/s of each of its sponsored
candidate/s along with non-refundable full course fee for four semesters, by way of a
demand draft payable to Gujarat University at Ahmedabad along with course deposit.
(v) The institution may have its own agreement with the candidate/s sponsored by it with
respect to the project work and further employment.
(vi) Acceptance: The Gujarat University PGPPM Committee will confirm the admission of
the sponsored candidate/s subject to the following:
1. The minimum qualifications are met.
2. In case an institution sponsors more than one candidate, the second or subsequent
candidates will be admitted only after acceptance of the first named candidates of
other sponsoring institutions, and so on for the third named and other candidates.
4. In case the second or third named sponsored candidates of various bodies are more
than the available number of seats, the Admission Committee will decide the mode
of selection and its decision will be binding on all concerned.
5. In case an admitted sponsored candidate opts out of the program within the first 15
days of the commencement of the course, the sponsoring body will be permitted to
sponsor another candidate against that seat by paying only the Course Deposit
again. This will be permitted only once for each sponsored seat and the entire
process must be completed within 30 days of the commencement of the course.
6. The Fees of Sponsored Candidates not granted admission will be refunded. Where
a sponsored candidate withdraws and the sponsoring institution does not sponsor
another candidate against that seat, no refund of fees already paid will be made.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU)

This MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) is made at Ahmedabad on


....................... between GUJARAT UNIVERSITY (hereinafter referred as “GU”), located at
Navrangpura, Ahmedabad, a University established under the Gujarat University Act, and
desirous of providing an employment-oriented post graduate programme in Port
Management.

............................................................................... and desirous of supporting the training of
professionals in the port sector.
The objective of this MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING is to train
professionals for managing the fast expanding business/trade through the ports of Gujarat and
other states of India.
Keeping in view the need for training of the students and to enhance the learning
process and improve upon by involving “____________” for various activities like research
and development, projects with industry applications, etc., the said MOU herewith is signed.
Both the “GU” and “_______” intend to co-operate in the following areas and work
jointly to bring closer the Industry and Academia.
1. To identify and create a panel of experts from _______ who has acquired specialised
skills in the fields for expert talks (Visiting Faculty) and updating/review of
curriculum.
2. To identify the areas and offer projects to the students (course participants) and
guiding for dissertation work as a part of the curriculum.
3. To recognise and offer in-plant/in-house industrial visits/training and help to co-
ordinate study tours in the respective specialised area for course participants.
4. To conduct jointly periodic continuing education programmes in the emerging areas
and inviting _______, Officers/Engineers as experts.
5. To organise jointly workshops, seminars, etc.
6. Providing information and publications related to the course.
7. _______ may sponsor one or more candidates and/or help the course participants for
their final placements.
8. _______ will appoint one officer to co-ordinate the activities under this MOU.
This MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING between GU and _______ will be
for a period of .............. years from the date of signing the documents after which it will be
reviewed further.
