The Salam Centre
for Cardiac Surgery
Cardiovascular diseases represent a new emergency in the African
continent. Nevertheless, there is a substantial lack of medical and surgical
facilities, as well as specialised personnel, to meet the growing needs
of the population.
In 2007 EMERGENCY launched a Regional Programme for Paediatrics
and Cardiac Surgery, whose hub is the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery
in Khartoum, Sudan.
Named Salam, meaning peace in Arabic, the Centre provides free of charge,
specialised assistance to children and adults affected by congenital
and acquired heart disease and it is linked to a network of Paediatric Centres
in Sudan and neighbouring countries.

Since 2005, EMERGENCY has treated over
109,844 patients in Sudan.
At the Salam Centre for Cardiac Surgery, from April 2007
through March 2010:
- 21,664 outpatients consultations
- 14,268 cardiological consultations
- 2,761 patients admitted
- 2,172 surgical interventions
- 762 cath lab procedures

STRUCTURE AND STAFF
63 Beds (including 15 ICU and 16 Sub-ICU beds), 3 Operating Theatres,
Outpatient Departments, Catheterization Laboratory, Radiology,
CT Scan, Ultrasound, Laboratory and Blood Bank, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy,
Sterilisation, Auxiliary services, Technical and Maintenance Department,
Guesthouse.
The centre employs 364 people, including 158 medical personnel
and 208 non-medical personnel. 300 Sudanese nationals receive training
from EMERGENCY’s international staff.
A REGIONAL PROGRAMME
FOR PAEDIATRICS AND CARDIAC SURGERY
The Salam Centre was designed to assist the population of an area three
times the size of Europe, where needs are significant and medical responses
are few and inadequate. In this vast African region, EMERGENCY plans
to build a network of Paediatric Centres that, besides offering free of charge
basic healthcare to patients under 14 years, will host the screening
of children and adults affected by cardiac diseases of surgical interest.
Those in need will be transferred to the Salam Centre for the intervention
and will then receive the postoperative follow-up in their country of origin.
The first of these Paediatric Centres opened in Bangui, capital of the Central
African Republic, in March 2009. The second Centre, operational from
Summer 2010, is located in Nyala, in the state of South Darfur, Sudan.
A third Centre is under construction in Port Sudan.
Since 2007 EMERGENCY’s international cardiologists have performed more
then 30 screening missions in Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic
Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Iraq, Sierra Leone and Uganda.
So far, patients from seventeen different countries have been admitted
at the Salam Centre.
Through this regional programme, EMERGENCY hopes to promote
cooperation among the countries involved, and to foster peace in a region
suffering from decades of continued war and poverty.
