Influence of Surface Area Contact to Reaction Rate

By: M. Helmi Akbar W. (14 / XI IPA 3)

I. Purpose of experiment
The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the influence of surface
area contact to reaction rate.

II. Theory
For heterogenous reaction, i.e. reaction in which the reactants are in
differents phases, the rate of reaction is affected by the surafce area. The
larger the surface area the higher the probabiliti for particles to meet and
react.

III. Instrument and Materials

Instrument

1. Chemical glass Materials

2. Measuring glass 25 ml 1. Egg shell

3. Reaction tubes (2 pieces) 2. HCl 0.5 M

4. Pipette

5. Ballons (2 pieces)

IV. Procedure of experiment

1. Pound egg shell into small pieces and powder.

2. Measure both of small pieces of egg shell and egg shell powder 1
gram each.

3. Measure 20 ml of HCl 0.5 M by using measuring glass and put it on

chemical glass.
4. Then put 1 gram of small pieces of egg shell on the A reaction tube
and 1 gram of the powder of egg shell on the B reaction tube.

5. Then pour 10 ml of HCl 0.5 M into each reaction tube at the same
time and set the ballon at the mouth of reaction tubes immediately.

6. Record the time needed to carry out reaction on both tube which is
indicated with the bulged ballon.

V. Observation Data
• Reaction on tube A needed 19 minutes and 13 seconds.

• Reaction on tube B needed 5 minutes and 42 seconds.

VI. Elaboration of experiment

Reaction on tube A finished slower than tube B because the

reaction on tube A contained of small pieces of egg shell that has smaller
surface area contact meanwhile the reaction on tube B contained egg shell
powder that has wider surface area contact compared with the small
pieces of egg shell.

VII. Conclusion

So the more delicate pieces the size of solid substance the surface
area is wider . The wider surface area contact of subtance the number of
collision and it makes the faster reaction occurs.

VIII. Questions

1) What is the purpose of crushing or pounding egg shell?

2) Complete the observation data!

3) Which ballon that bulged first?

4) Which one has wider surface area contact, the powder or small pieces
of egg shell?

5) Make conclusion based on the data!

Answers

1) To widen the surface area contact of the egg shell.

2) Tube A needed 19’13’’ to finish the reaction.

Tube B needed 5’42’’ to finish the reaction.

3) Ballon on tube B.

4) The powder of egg shell.

5) So the more delicate pieces the size of solid substance the surface area
is wider . The wider surface area contact of subtance the number of
collision and it makes the faster reaction occurs.
