GHG emissions, improves air quality, and enhances mine
safety. In 2010, global methane emissions from coal
mines were estimated to be approximately 407 MMTCO2E. By 2020, the
world’s coal mines are expected to produce annual emissions of 450
MMTCO2E.

Ukraine Builds
on Successes
As the world’s fourth largest emit-
ter of methane from coal mining
activities, Ukraine is working with the
support of EPA to raise awareness
about the benefits of capturing and
using CBM and CMM. Efforts have
focused on addressing legislative,
regulatory, and financial barriers to
project development. In April 2009,
EPA sponsored a roundtable held by
the Ukrainian Parliament Committee
on Fuel to discuss issues associated
