Jammers enews
Is published to inform interested people of events,
CD launches, jam sessions, to review past sessions, to
promote events being put on by Jammers,
encourage people to get involved in live
performance and to provide an iinformative and
friendly network for musicians and followers of jazz.
This jams feature a blend of accomplished musicians
and those beginning their jamming careers. A great
opportunity to drop in, meet other musicians, blow
your heart out on your favourite tune or kick back
and listen in. The music may be good, bad or
bebop, swing, blues, latin or lousy – anything can
happen and often does! All are welcome. Bring
charts.

Friday at the Leinster

Arrived a bit after 6pm to find Frank (guitar and
Bass) and Tony (Keys and Bass) already playing to a
small audience. Jack (trom), Keith (mostly bass
clarinet), Ted (keys), Louis (keys), Shad (drums),
John (guitar) and Jim (drums) joined in as the night
progressed.
A vocalist free night apart from Wendy who was
brave enough to front the microphone for the very
first time. Wendy has an interesting voice and loads
of potential.
A good time was had by all so I hope to see you
next Friday

The Rotten Ronnie Chronicles (continued)
As if... managed to get to two jams this week end -
Friday facilitated in part by the Guildord Lane
workshop now coming with new improved $10 cover
charge, which, even with a 50% discount for
students, may prove a bit steep.
And what a medium sized week it has been in jams -
Friday at the Leinster a joyous little bash, and even
though I left early, with jammers still staggering
across Gold Street and into the house, a fair amount
of jollity was already being had, as is invariably the
case with Col, Frank, multi-talented Luxmore and the
usual crew all firing. . See elsewhere for details...
Sunday, back to the Leinster, and I fronted with my
Tasmanian friend Prudence in tow, having promised
that she would at least be kept awake for the
afternoon. At first it was, admittedly, touch and go,
but as the session warmed up and more and more
assorted, or maybe unsorted ,jammers popped
through the door, the vol turned up, the tempo was
toe tapping and the musical standard reached,
maybe even exceeded, the apotheosis of average .
Even accounting for the fact that Tasmanians are a
little, er, different, Prudence declared herself well
entertained by the time we left. Props to Jeremy and
Frank (bass), Malcolm (sax) Captain Col leading
proceedings with customary aplomb, Al "I wish I was
Buddy Rich" on drums, Keef on bass clarinet, as well
as a some other *dude whose name I forgot who
could actually play drums, Marion on keys, a variety
of tonsil artistes including the sublime but scatty Miss
Smith, all topped off by **Tom (?) on blues harp
calling Blue Moon in five sharps - we like a challenge!
It has been noticeable in recent weeks that the Jam
sessions are entertaining the clientele in the back
bar, interfering with the smooth running of functions
in other parts of the Leinster, causing eight ball
players to tap their toes between shots, and
gradually attracting the attention of complete
strangers (not to mention the partially strange
jammers themselves). It is in danger of becoming
popular. This is quite inappropriate and should cease
forthwith.
You have been warned.

A pianist and banjo or guitar players are needed for
a weekly trad jazz jam. Players of other instruments
and vocalists are also most welcome. We generally
roster the drummers and pianists (one of each at a
time) but everyone else is welcome to turn up. Bring
your own chord books/charts if you need them.

Penny School in Maldon looking for acts to perform

I went to a performance by Doug Owen at the
Penny School in Maldon and talking to the owner
and manager, Barry Vieth is or was a big band
muso and organiser. It is a good venue and I
believe Barry and his wife Marilyn are good
employers of musos. They have an excellent grand
piano. I have seen Jan Preston (piano), Miles White
(guitar) and Mark Hannaford (piano) play there.
The venue probably suits smaller groups best. I
thought you might be able to pass the word out to
people looking for gigs. It’s about an hour and a
half from Melb. They are also looking to attract
audiences from Melbourne
