Kartikeya was son of Shiva and the brother of Ganesha. He is also known as Skanda.
Skanda is believed to give name to the Jat gotra Sheokand and to the region Scandinavia.

He is known by many other names, including Karttikeya (meaning 'son of Krittika' ),


Arumugam or Shanmukha (meaning 'one with six faces'), Kumara (meaning 'child or
son'), Skanda (meaning 'that which is spilled or oozed, namely seed' in Sanskrit.

The Atharva Veda describes Kumaran as 'Agnibhuh' or son of Agni, the fire god. The
Satapatha Brahmana refers to him as the son of Rudra and the ninth form of Agni. The
Taittiriya Aranyaka contains the Gayatri mantra for Shanmukha. The Chandogya
Upanishad refers to Skanda as the "way that leads to wisdom". The Baudhayana
Dharmasutra mentions Skanda as 'Mahasena' and 'Subrahmanya.' The Aranya Pa rva
canto of the Mahabharata relates the legend of Kartikeya Skanda in considerable detail.

Murugan shlokas and mantras for worship/prayer:

(1) om jaya jaya mahavira bhagavan sri skanda namo nama ?


Aum! Victory, Victory (to Thee)! Salutations to the Great Hero, Lord Skanda.

(2) muruga muruga ve?ve?muruga, muruga muruga vetri ve?muruga


This is a popular shloka in the Tamil language, it glorifies Lord Murugan and His Vel
(a.k.a. shula, meaning ‘lance’), which represents His Shakti. Vetri means victory.

(3) jñana saktidhara skanda valli kalya?asundara |


devasena mana? kanta kartikeya namo'stute ||
om subrama?yaya nama ? ||
Unto Skanda, who holds the power of spiritual knowledge,
The Beloved of Valli and Enchanter of the mind of Devasena,
Praiseful salutations to Thee, O Kartikeya.
Aum! Salutations to Subramanya.

(4) mayuravahana? vira? tarakasura mardanam |


vande ?a?anana? deva? kartikeya sivatmajam ||
To the brave One, whose mount is the peacock,
That Destroyer of the demon Tarakasura,
Obeisance to Lord Shadanana, born of Shiva’s own Self.
