CLOUD COMPUTING

Cloud computing is already here – with web-based email and social

networking websites just two examples of services which exist in the ‘cloud’. No
software or local servers are needed, just an Internet connection. The trend towards
services moving to the ‘cloud’ is already underway. The question remains how far it
will go and how much it will impact on our use of the Internet and computing in future.
Everything will happen in the virtual space known as the ‘cloud’ accessible through our
Internet connection to any computer or mobile device.
It is one of those emerging technologies that everyone knows they want to get
into, but no one seems to know why or what the real benefit is. Cloud computing is not
a new issue - it has been around since the beginning of the Internet but with an increase
in bandwidth and reliability of the Internet, its true potential is now emerging. Hundreds
of companies are already offering cloud computing services aimed at big companies as
well as individual users. A new era of computing may be dawning but it is still at an
early stage.
In general, cloud computing customers do not own the physical infrastructure,
instead avoiding capital expenditure by renting usage from a third-party provider. They
consume resources as a service and pay only for resources that they use, just like we
buy like electricity. Then we might just have a monitor and a terminal, or some mobile
device. We will no longer need to install or update programs or software on our
computers and all our data could be kept in the ‘cloud’ not on hard drives. There will be
massive data centers in the ‘cloud’ with thousands of servers like enormous public
mainframe computers spread over sites in different countries A side-effect of this
approach is that overall computer usage rises dramatically.
