during the modern Civil Rights Movement. The wall behind the table
is inscribed with excerpts from the Book of Amos quoted in the

Memorial Center expands the experience of the Memorial that
honors the memory of those who lost their lives during the Civil

The museum is a major landmark in the revitalization of downtown
Montgomery. The museum is located on the site of the old Empire
Theatre where Mrs. Parks began her courageous and historic stand in
l 955. The museum features a recreated street scene and replica of the
bus, while video footage transports visitors to the fateful day.
Additional exhibits lead visitors on an emotional journey through the
days of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which became the first step on
the often difficult path to Civil Rights in America. The Children’s
Wing provides an experience that is much more child focused and
tailored specifically for their age and comprehension abilities.
Through the use of multi-media presentations via a “Time Machine,”
the Children’s Wing prepares visitors for the museum reenactment
experience involving Rosa Parks, activities of Martin Luther King, Jr.,
and involvement of other early Civil Rights leaders. Exclusive to this
museum, the scholar’s research area captures Montgomery’s history
and Civil Rights history including artifacts, oral histories, historical
documents, and art for high school students and adults.

How to get to the Visitor Center at Union Station
Traveling I - 8 5 S ou t h : Follow I-85 South to Montgomery and
take Exit #1 onto Union Street. Turn right on Perry Street and turn left at
the sixth red light onto Dexter Avenue. Follow Dexter Avenue until it turns
into Commerce Street. Continue down Commerce Street to the half circle
and take an immediate right onto Water Street. The Visitor Center is inside
Union Station.

Traveling I - 6 5 S ou t h : Follow I-65 to Montgomery. Just north


of the I-85 intersection, take the Clay Street Exit (172) toward downtown.
Turn left onto Herron Street. Herron Street becomes Bibb Street. Turn left
onto Commerce Street. Follow the street to a half circle at the end and
then take an immediate right onto Water Street. The Visitor Center is
inside Union Station.

Traveling I - 6 5 N O R t h : Follow I-65 to Montgomery. Just north


of the I-85 intersection, take the Herron Street Exit (172) toward
downtown. Keep right at the fork in the ramp. Turn onto Herron Street.
Herron Street becomes Bibb Street. Turn left onto Commerce Street.
Follow the street to a half circle at the end and then take an immediate
right onto Water Street. The Visitor Center is inside Union Station.
