From March 1st through April 30th, the
Fight Against Hunger movement, sponsored
by the noted philanthropist, Alan Feinstein,
is offering their yearly challenge. During
these two months only, any monetary and/
or food donations made to Helping Hands
will be totaled and the amount reported to
the Feinstein Foundation in order to qualify
Helping Hands for a portion of the one mil-
lion dollars that has been set aside to match
funds. The amount Helping Hands receives
will be its portion when all the qualifying
food pantries in the United States have sub-
mitted their donation amounts. The more
Helping Hands collects, the larger the per-
centage they will receive.
Donations may be taken to either How-
ard City bank (Firstbank or Independent),
dropped off at the pantry during regular
open hours, or mailed directly to Helping
Hands at P. O. Box 532, Howard City, MI
49329. (If a receipt is needed, a request,

Henry Maciulaitis
Henry Maciulaitis, 73, of Pier-
son passed away on Feb. 18, 2011,
at Spectrum Health Butterworth
Campus.
He was born March 20, 1937, in
Belmont, the son of Henry and Hel-
ena Maciulaitis. Henry worked on
the farm as well as being a loader
operator for over 30 years. He loved
Bingo, watching birds, watching
cooking shows and football.
Surviving are seven daughters,
Linda Humbarger and Wendy Law-
son both of Howard City; Kathy
Wright of Evart, Shiela (John)
Stears of Constatine, Patty (Rob-
ert) Jackson of Howard City, Jody
Maciulaitis of Pierson and Kelly
Macuilaitis of Howard City; sons,
Jerry (Pam) Lawson of Sand Lake
and Mark (Brenda) Lawson of
Howard City; many grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; and sev-
eral nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by his parents;
three sons, Michael Sammons and
John Lawson and Dean Lawson;
and grandson Johnny Kronberg.
Memorial services are to take place
at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the
Heckman funeral home with Tony
Wright officiating. Friends may call

Finding of No Significant Impact
It has been determined that such request for release of funds for the above project will
not constitute an action significantly affecting the quality of the human environment
and accordingly above named Village has decided not to prepare an Environmental
Impact Statement (EIS) under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA,
42 USC 4321).
The reasons for the decision not to prepare an EIS are as follows:
No serious environmental adverse impacts or hazards were identified in the course of
the environmental review.
An Environmental Review Record respecting the proposed project has been made by
Village of Howard City, which documents the environmental review of the project

CROTON TOWNSHIP
NEWAYGO COUNTY, MICHIGAN
At a regular meeting of the Township Board of Croton Town-
ship, Newaygo County, Michigan held at the Township Hall on
February 14, 2011, at 7:00 PM, Township Board Member Mor-
gan Heinzman moved to adopt the following ordinance amend-
ment, which motion was seconded by Township Member Chris
Ortwein.
An ordinance to accept the Croton Township Planning Com-
missions recommendations for changes and amendments to the
Zoning Ordinance of Section 2.120-Fences to read as follows.
Section 14.60 Signs - Definitions
Direction Sign: A sign which gives directions, instructions
or facility information for directing traffic.
Temporary Directional Sign: A sign which gives direction
to real estate, open house, garage sale, auction sale, etc.
Section 14.70 (B), add a new subparagraph (7): Temporary
directional sign of six (6) square feet or less in size.”
Section 14.70 (F). Change to read: No sign shall be placed
in, upon or over any public right-of-way, alley or other
public place that would interfere with normal traffic func-
tions.
Section 14.120 District Sign Regulations: Add temporary
signs in each district, with a height of no more than 42
inches and a size of less than six (6) square feet; length
cannot exceed more than four (4) times its height.
Section 2.110
Add a new paragraph as follows: A. (7): In a District where
a portion of a lot is within five hundred (500) feet from
the lot upon which the principal structure is located, an ac-
cessory building or structure may be constructed on that
portion of the unoccupied lot, provided, however, said
lots shall be permanently combined under one (1) legal
description and described and recorded as such. An acces-
sory building so located shall meet the requirements of a
principal building pursuant to setbacks from the road, side
and rear lots lines. The accessory building shall have a
minimum floor area of 300 square feet.
Section 16.50
(A)(2)(a) Modify the number of copies from “five (5)” to
“ten (10)” so that ZBA applicants supply the Township
with ten (10) copies of necessary documentation.
Section 2.120 - Fences
Add a new subparagraph (k): Barbed wire fence only per-
mitted for agricultural fencing used for bona fide farming
for the containment of livestock.
Except the reasonable use of barbed wire is allowed along
the top of security fences which protect the public or
properties such as storage yards, transfer stations, public
utilities, impoundment lots, etc. On such fences the barbed
wire will be at least 6 (six) feet above ground level.

All interested agencies, groups, and persons disagreeing with this decision are invited

49329 on or before March 15, 2011 All such comments so received will be considered
and Village of Howard City will not request the release of Federal funds or take any
administrative action on proposed project prior to the date specified in the preceding
sentence.
Release of Funds
Village of Howard City will undertake the project described above with Commu-
nity Development Block Grant funds from the State of Michigan under Title I of the
Housing and Community Development act of 1974. The Village of Howard City is
certifying that the Village of Howard City and Mark Rambo, in his official capacity
as Manager for the Village of Howard City, is consenting to accept the jurisdiction
of Federal courts if an action is brought to enforce responsibilities in relation to envi-
ronmental reviews, decision-making, and action; and that these responsibilities have
been satisfied. The legal effect of the certification is that upon its approval Village
of Howard City may use the Block Grant funds and the state will have satisfied its
responsibilities under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969.
Objections to State Release of Funds
The State of Michigan will accept an objection to its approval only if it is on one of
the following bases: (a) that the certification was not in fact executed by the certifying
officer or other officer of applicant approved by the State of Michigan; or (b) that ap-
plicant’s environmental review record for the project indicated omission of a required
decision finding or step applicable to the project in the environmental review process.
Objections must be prepared and submitted to the State of Michigan, Michigan Eco-
nomic Development Corporation, Community Development Block Grant Program,
300 North Washington Square, 3rd Floor, Lansing, Michigan 48913.
Objections to the release of funds on bases other than those stated above will not be
considered by the state. No objections received after March 31, 2011 will be consid-
ered by the state.

This month Tri County recognized the principals for their
dedication to our school. This took place at the February 14
board of education meeting.
Kurt Mabie is the principal of the middle school and the
high school, two jobs one man has never been challenged
with in our district since the early 1970’s when Tri County’s
enrollment was a fraction of the current enrollment. Krystyna
Sweeney is also working hard and providing duel leadership
to two schools, Edgerton Upper Elementary and Sand Lake
Elementary. Appreciation and gratitude goes out to Kurt and
Krystyna for their countless hours to Tri County.
Also recognized for leadership was Dan Brant, director
of special education, Joe Williams, assistant principal at the
high school, Bill Cichewicz, assistant principal at the middle
school, and Tim Goheen interim principal at MacNaughton
Elementary.

The state has come out with new requirements for student
immunizations. These requirements take affect before the start
of school next September. The changes will affect students
going into kindergarten, fifth and sixth graders turning 11
years old, and any child changing school districts. The Health
Department will give shots to anyone without insurance, but
you must call them first for an appointment. Please plan ahead
and call your doctor or health department and utilize spring
break and summer break to have your child immunized.

Kindergarten: need second dose of Varicella (Chicken Pox
vaccine)
11 Year-olds: Need Meningitis Shot and Tdap booster

On March 1, 2, and 3 all juniors in the state of Michigan
are required to take the MME test. Tri County High School
requires all students to take the MME test as a graduation
requirement. Seniors who did not complete all three days of
testing in 2010, will also need to test on March 1, 2, and 3.
On March 1, students will be taking the ACT test, on March
2, they will take the Work Keys, and March 3, they will take
the Michigan math, Michigan science, and Michigan social
studies. Attendance is required for all three days. On March 1,
juniors will be dismissed early after taking the ACT test. The
testing will be finished around 12:15 p.m. and transportation
will not be available until 2:21, please plan accordingly. On
March 2 and 3 the juniors will remain at school after testing.
On March 1 all freshmen and sophomores will be taking the
PLAN test, a pre ACT test. They will also be involved in career
day activities, including: Career Cruising, college presentation,
military presentations, career center presentations, trade
school presentations, and career presentations.
On March 1 seniors do not report to Tri County High
School, they will be given the opportunity to go on a college
visit, job shadow, or volunteer. Students can go to www.
workpaths.com to find more information on job shadowing
opportunities.
Test taking tips:
Go to www.actstudent.org and click on test prep. This is
a great resource for students and parents, including: practice
test questions, test taking tips, and test day procedures.

request made by David Inman, 11thgrade, as previously
reviewed. David must meet all requirements as set forth.

ACTION ITEM #2 - School Election Resolution. Motion
by Dailey, second by Fennessy to adopt the resolution calling
for a Special Election on May 3, 2011, and approved the ballot
language containing option 1: Operating Millage and Voted
Debt Bonds with Current Millage rate continued. Motion
CARRIED (5-0-2).
ACTION ITEM #3 - Election Coordinator. Motion by
Hoisington, second by Fennessy to appoint Sherry Wheeler
as election coordinator. Motion CARRIED (5-0-2).
ACTION ITEM #4 - Additional Coaching Positions.
Motion by Dailey, second by Powell to approve the addition
of Freshman Baseball Coach and JV Boys Golf Coach for
the 2010-2011 school year, with positions being paid by the
Athletic Boosters. Motion CARRIED (5-0-2).

In the spring of 1962 Sand Lake High School and Howard
City Community Schools (both K-12 grade schools) came
together to form Tri County Area Schools. Below are some
fun facts about each school, before and after the merge.

Sand Lake School History:
In the 1957 Wildcat Yearbook (Sand Lake High School)
this building is pictured along with the statement, "This four-
room school was built in 1907 in the center of town, but only
three rooms were used. This was the first school known as the
Sand Lake High school."
There was a school built before the pictured building. In
1872, Sand Lake built its first one-room school. It was later
used as the first Catholic Church in Sand Lake.
Howard City School History:
In the 1954-55 Howard City Community Schools Student
Handbook it reads, "Citizenship: We have very few rules and
regulations governing the conduct of students in Howard City
High School. The only thing that is to be expected of you is,
that you conduct yourself as a lady or gentleman at all times,
not only while in school but also on the street or wherever
you may be. Remember that as a student of this school you are
also a representative of this school, and people will judge your
school and your schoolmates by your actions. All of us like
to live and work in a clean place. Your care of your personal
property as well as the school property will insure you of this
kind of cleanliness. Do your share in picking up paper and
keeping the rooms tidy and you will be happier for having
done it and will give others a better impression of you."
TC School History:
In August of 1969, the Howard City Record published
a full page of the upcoming first day of school including
announcements, bus routes (listing last names of each child
riding), and faculty names and information. The page reveals
how times and prices have changed. In one announcement,
under the hot lunch heading, it reads, “Hot lunch and special
milk prices will remain the same for the time being. Hot lunch
may be purchased by the week for $1.50 or by the day for
$.35. Milk will be four cents per unit. The special sandwich
line at the high school will continue to be available.”

The Art of Being

I recently read “The Art of Being” by Dennis Merrit Jones, DD. In this book he talks about 7 “Be-Attitudes”
which I think are worth sharing. His summary is that these are Seven Ways of Being that Will Alter the
Altitude of Your Attitude.
1. Be Present in Every Moment. You are invited to “be” rather than to “do”.
2. Be Willing to Listen to your Intuitive Self and the Guidance it Offers. The primary difference between
the animals and us is that they cannot choose to ignore that guidance, but we can and often do ignore
it. When we ignore it, we often suffer the consequences of that choice. Hearing and listening are two
different functions.
3. Be Open and Transparent in your Communications. Transparency means you have nothing to hide,
nothing to defend, and nothing to fear.
4. Be of Service to Others. A life of wholeness will never be obtained until you offer the whole of yourself
to the whole of life.
5. Be Generous and Grateful. Someone who has developed the attitude of gratitude and generosity is
first and foremost established in an attitude of “I am enough”. There is an inherent intelligence in Nature
that knows there is always enough for everyone.
