Introduction
T he 2011 edition of Ambiente boasted an attendance increase of almost ten percent
over last year’s fair. That meant more than 144,000 trade visitors attended the world’s
largest consumer-goods fair, held in Frankfurt, Germany. They saw the latest color and
design for tableware, kitchen products, home accessories and gifts.
This year’s event felt like a launching pad for the decade. With improvements taking hold
in the economy, exhibitors showed not only optimism, but also enough new products to
keep consumer interest in positive territory going forward. All facets of design moved
ahead: color, texture, shape and pattern. This is in contrast to last year, when color car-
ried most of the burden of newness. No wonder the show had a higher level of energy
and excitement than in the recent past.
All the color and design trends from Ambiente will be discussed in the pages to come.
Each topic has supporting images that show you the trends, and company names are noted
in each case. To find contact information for these exhibitors, go to messefrankfurt.com
and select Ambiente 2011 from the Exhibitions (A- Z) menu. Then, look for Exhibitors
and Products on the left and enter the name of the company you wish to locate.

Grids and Checks proved that plaid patterns still have a future:
• Grids appeared over and over again
• Their best roles were as background patterns or allover textures
• In these situations, the scale was quite small
• Though checks never got huge, they went beyond tiny sizes
• A few box patterns appeared, the newest of which looked digital
• Ginghams were key, as they are in most spring-focused assortments
• They appeared in many colors and materials at Ambiente
• More-conventional plaids struggled to be noticed
• Only a few patterns featured them this time, but plaids looked great when they appeared
