Business Case <Insert Project Name> Created on 8 May 2008:

Overview
Purpose To document the justification for the undertaking of a project based on the
estimated cost of development and implementation against the risks and the
anticipated business benefits and savings to be gained. The total business
change must be considered, which may be much wider than just the project
development cost.

The Business Case is used to say why the forecast effort and time will be worth
the expenditure. The Project Board will monitor the ongoing viability of the
project against the Business Case.

Contents The Business Case should cover the following topics.

Reasons...............................................................................................3
Options...............................................................................................3
Benefits Expected...............................................................................3
Risks...................................................................................................3
Costs...................................................................................................4
Timescale............................................................................................4

Advice The existence of a provisional Business Case is checked during Starting Up a

Project (SU). If the Project Mandate does not contain a Business Case, this
would be created. The Business Case is refined in sub-process Refining the
Business Case and Risks (IP3).

Information for the Business case may be obtained from the Project
Mandate/Brief, the Project Plan and the customer. All Benefits should be
justified and in line with the Project Plan. The reasons for the project must be
consistent with the corporate or programme strategy.
