A Year of P R O G R E S S
It was a year that started with new Chamber
leadership and ended with a Celebration of Regional
Growth recognizing seven organizations that made
substantial investments in new facilities, technology and
jobs in our region. It was also a year when the worries of
economic uncertainty slowly began to give way to cautious
optimism.
For the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce
(LRCC), 2009 was a year of new vision, innovative
initiatives that delivered promising results, unprecedented
success in the political and government relations arenas
and increased membership involvement in networking
events and affinity programs.
For the Lansing Regional Chamber and the region as
a whole, it was a year of progress.
At the start of 2009, the Chamber team led by
president and CEO Tim Daman and Kristin Beltzer, senior
vice president, Government Relations & Public Affairs, laid
out an ambitious agenda that emphasized four priority
areas: business growth initiatives, government
relations, regional cooperation and membership.
During the past 12 months, each of those areas has met
with considerable success.
Perhaps the most important characteristic of the
Chamber’s progress in the past year has been an increased
emphasis on public/private partnerships
that are being leveraged to advance a
unified regional vision.
“Even during the challenging times,
the Chamber Board had confidence that
advocating for the best interests of the
region and our membership would bring
positive results, and that’s exactly what
happened,” said John Truscott, 2009 LRCC
Board Chairman. “It has been rewarding to
be part of a team that has delivered on what
it set out to do.”

private sector partnerships has resulted in

several exciting initiatives in the past year. The Chamber
is working with several regional partners to develop an
international marketing program to support development
and growth surrounding the Facility for Rare Isotope
Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University.
The Chamber also worked closely with business
and education leaders in the region to launch a public
awareness campaign that highlighted the investments
and contributions of the region’s insurance industry.
Insuring Greater Lansing’s Future was designed to
make the Lansing region more attractive for business
investment and further the image of the region as a hub
for the insurance sector.
The 2009 local elections gave further evidence to the
Lansing Regional Chamber’s ability to build a winning team
and successfully advocate for a pro business, pro growth
agenda. The Lansing Regional Chamber’s Political Action
Committee (LRC PAC) enjoyed an unprecedented perfect
record in candidate endorsements in the November
elections. Nine out of nine candidates endorsed by LRC
PAC were elected to office in races for Lansing Mayor,
Lansing City Council, Lansing Community College Board of
Trustees and Lansing Board of Education.

exciting opportunities within the Chamber, the business

Among the areas that hold great promise in the
coming year are the Procurement Technical Assistance
Center, which helps area businesses secure government
contracts, Port Lansing and the Foreign Trade Zone at
Capital Region International Airport and the 2010 state and
local elections, in which the Lansing Regional Chamber
will play an active role.
A major emphasis in the coming year will also
be placed on delivering the finest in membership
programming and services. The Annual Dinner will take
place at the beautiful Wharton Center at MSU and offer
increased networking opportunities. The 2010 Economic
Club series offers an impressive array of speakers. Finally,
our new-tiered membership structure offers our members
the opportunity to better align Chamber services with their
particular needs.
While the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce
is proud to celebrate its progress of the past year, we also
realize that we must turn our attention to the year ahead.

When our Chamber team laid out our vision for this great organization one year ago, we agreed that we
wanted to be known throughout the region as an organization that did what it said it would do.
We also agreed that we would be a very transparent organization, that is, we would be upfront about our
goals, regularly update our membership on our progress and honest in evaluating our results.
It is that commitment to transparency that caused us to do something quite different with this month’s edition
of FOCUS. We are using our most powerful communications tool to publish the core of the Chamber’s 2009
Annual Report. We hope you will enjoy the opportunity to review the highlights of what we felt was a great year.

The Lansing Regional Chamber of Com-
merce’ Political Action Committee (LRC PAC)
was actively engaged in recruiting and endorsing
candidates who share our pro business/pro growth
vision for the region. On November 3rd, LRC PAC
enjoyed an unprecedented perfect record as all nine
of its endorsed candidates were elected to office.
LRCC hosted more than 230 attendees at the
2009 Chambers of Commerce of Michigan Leg-
islative Banquet, held March 18 at the Radisson
Hotel in downtown Lansing. House Speaker Andy
Dillon, Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop and
House Minority Leader Kevin Elsenheimer participat-
ed in a panel discussion that centered on tax reform,
spending of federal stimulus dollars, healthcare and
urban policy.

2010 Goals
The statewide election in 2010 is one of the
most pivotal in years. Races for Governor, State Leg-
islature and Congress will be before voters. LRC
PAC intends to be actively involved in evaluating,
endorsing and supporting candidates in key races
in order to ensure that the influence of the business
community is an important factor in determining
who represents the region in Lansing and Washing-
ton D.C.
LRCC will again host the 2010 Chambers of
Commerce Legislative Dinner, which is scheduled
for March 24 at the Radisson Hotel. The Chamber
also plans on hosting another Mid-Michigan Del-
egation Breakfast at a date to be announced later
in the year.
The Chamber plans to expand the role of its
Public Policy Advocacy Committee (PPAC),
which was formed last year to analyze and develop
policy positions on issues affecting the Lansing busi-
ness community and the mid-Michigan region.
Eight members of our local legislative del-
egation participated in the 2009 Mid-Michigan
Delegation Breakfast attended by business, gov-
ernment and education leaders. Lawmakers fielded
questions from the audience on a wide range of top-
ics, including the state budget, education, healthcare,
tax reform and term limits.
The Chamber launched its East Lansing and
Meridian Government Relations Commit-
tee (ELMGRC). Patterned after the Chamber’s
highly successful Delta Government Relations
Committee, government, education and business
officials meet monthly to discuss important business
and legislative issues in East Lansing and Meridian
Township.
Members of Mid-Michigan’s legislative delegation met with
local leaders from business, government and education at
the Mid-Michigan Delegation Breakfast in November.

2009 Highlights
The Chamber established a sub-center for the
regional Procurement Technical Assistance
Center (PTAC) in 2008. PTAC is enjoying con-
siderable success in helping tri-county businesses
identify opportunities to secure government con-
tracts. During 2009, regional businesses received
550 contracts, totaling $33.4 million.
LRCC continues to work closely with Capital
Region International Airport on the marketing and
business development efforts for the Foreign Trade
Zone (FTZ) and Port Lansing. In August 2009,
the federal government approved the application for
FTZ status establishing Foreign Trade Zone #275.
The Chamber is working with several regional
partners to market the Facility for Rare Isotope
Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University. A

international program in the coming year. Look
for more activity surrounding the FTZ and Port
Lansing. Companies in the region and through
the Midwest are already recognizing the enormous
potential in utilizing Port Lansing to grow interna-
tional trade opportunities.
LRCC’s International Market Development
Initiative will lead the coordination of international

vibrant, multi-media web site was launched to assist
in strategic marketing of the region to prospective
FRIB employees and their families. The web site,

to serve as a one-stop shopping destination for peo-
ple interested in learning about the region.

ness campaign launched by the Chamber to highlight
the investments and contributions made in the
region by the various insurance companies that are
headquartered in and around greater Lansing. The
campaign is designed to make the Lansing region
more attractive for business investment and further
the image of the region as a hub for the insurance

2009 Highlights
The Lansing Regional Chamber dedicated the Insurance Capital Board Room in December.
In 2009, the Chamber commissioned Capitol
Research Services to conduct focus groups and a
series of in-depth interviews with Chamber members
to help us identify how we can better align our ser-
vices with the needs of our members. As a result,
the Chamber developed a new Tiered Membership
structure that offers an opportunity to choose from
five levels of membership based on business needs.
Business, Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum member-
ship levels are designed for businesses of all sizes
looking for increased exposure, access, networking
and involvement.
LRCC welcomed 145 businesses to our growing
membership base. Retention levels reached 80% in
2009, demonstrating the high return on investment
LRCC is delivering to our members.

LRCC hopes that the initial positive feedback
to the new Tiered Membership structure will not
only help increase overall Chamber membership
and retention levels in 2010, but will also encour-
age members to become more involved in various
events and programs. Members will find the flex-
ible options provided by the enhanced membership
will cause them to realize a greater value from their
Chamber investment.
The Chamber’s Ambassador Team has been
instrumental as a liaison between the Chamber and
its membership. The LRCC Ambassador Committee
will host the 2010 Statewide Ambassador Con-
ference held September 29-October 1, 2010 in
Lansing.
Affinity Programs with organizations includ-
ing Blue Cross Blue Shield, Accident Fund Insurance
Company of America, Auto-Owners Insurance, Com-
cast and DBI Office Products continue to grow and
create added value for Chamber members. More
than 160 businesses shared a $147,999 premium
dividend from Accident Fund Insurance Company of
America, thanks to safe work practices and their par-
ticipation in a workers compensation group dividend
program, available through the Chamber.
The Chamber dedicated the Insurance Capital
Board Room in December 2009 with much thanks
to Accident Fund Insurance Company of America,
Auto-Owners Insurance, Farm Bureau Insurance and
Jackson National Life Insurance.

2009 Highlights
The Economic Club of Greater Lansing hosted a forum on regionalism in May 2009, featuring the top six
local elected officials in the region.
Nearly 1,000 Lansing Regional Chamber mem-
bers enjoyed a night of networking and entertainment
at the 97th Annual Dinner. Award winners rec-
ognized during the evening were: Rachelle Neal of
Capitol Research Services (ATHENA Award), Kelly
Rossman-McKinney, president of the Rossman Group
(Community Service Award) and MessageMakers
and its owner, Terry Terry (Outstanding Small Busi-
ness Award).
The Celebration of Regional Growth hon-
ored seven organizations that have or will invested
in new facilities, technology and jobs in our region.
The honorees included: East Lansing Technology
Innovation Center, Facility for Rare Isotope Beams,
General Motors, Granger, GreenStone Farm Credit
Services, Jackson National Life Insurance and the
Lansing Board of Water and Light.

2010 Goals
The 98th Annual Dinner will feature a new
venue and modified format in 2010. MSU’s Whar-
ton Center will host the event for the first time. In
response to member feedback, the Annual Dinner
will feature a strolling dinner, as opposed to the
more traditional sit-down affair. That is intended to
provide greater networking opportunities for those
in attendance. The evening’s highlight will continue
to be the presentation of the ATHENA, Community
Service and Outstanding Small Business Awards.
The 2010 Economic Club speaker series
is one of the strongest in memory. MSU President
Lou Anna Simon, U of M Athletic Director and for-
mer Domino’s CEO David Brandon, and Phil Power,
president of The Center for Michigan lead an all-star
lineup.
LRCC will focus more heavily on its signature
events in 2010 which will result in higher quality
programming for members and the elimination of a
handful of lower profile events.

A rained out June outing allowed Chamber
members to conclude the summer with the Lansing
Open on August 18. The outing was held at both
Hawk Hollow and Eagle Eye golf courses. Nearly 300

The third annual Ten Over the Next Ten
Awards program honored the area’s top young pro-
fessionals who are expected to contribute significantly
to our community over the next ten years. LRCC and
Grand River Connection were co-sponsors.
