IMMIGIRATION GUIDELINES FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

I. NEW APPLICATION

1. International Applicants who have been offered to study in Malaysia are


required to have a Student Pass approval before entering the country

2. To apply for a Student Pass, the candidates is required to submit to


Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS):

a) 2 certified photocopies of all used pages of his/her passport


b) 3 passport-sized photographs

The passport should have a validity period that covers the period of study

3. Applicants who have previously applied /registered in any institution in


Malaysia and possess a Student Pass under that institution are required to
get a letter of release from the said institution in order to cancel the
particular student pass. The application for a Student Pass under UM
cannot be processed until the release is given.

4. Applicants who enter Malaysia on a Social Visit Pass before obtaining the
approval for student pass will be required to pay a sum RM500.00 for
journey performed (JP) visa, in addition to the normal Student Pass
processing fee.

5. For such cases, it is the sole responsibility of the student to ensure that the
Social Visit Pass does not expire before the Student Pass is approved.

6. Applicants need to register and pay the fees before submitting their
passports to IPS. IPS will arrange for the passports to be endorsed at the
Immigration Office.

II. GRADUATE STUDENTS WITH FAMILY

1. Candidates who wish to bring their family to Malaysia need to complete


registration first before bringing the family to the country.

2. IPS will issue a letter of invitation to the candidate’s family so that they
can get an entry visa from the nearest Malaysia Embassy in their country.

3. Upon the arrival of the family members, the candidate is required to


submit the following documents for visa/pass applications:

(a) 2 certified photocopies of passport (inclusive of the front page,
hard cover and all used pages
(b) Marriage Certificate or letter from the respective embassy
(c) Birth Certificate for children birth certificates
(d) 2 passport-size photographs of each family member

4. Family members who enter Malaysia before receiving the dependent visa
from Malaysia we have to pay sum of RM500.00 for each person (over
and above the normal fees for dependent visa).

III. EXTENSION OF STUDENT PASS/DEPENDENT PASS

1. Application for extension of Student Pass/Dependent Pass Visa must be


made through IPS at least one month before expiry of the said pass/visa.
The application must be enclosed with a photocopy of the passport, the
original passport and cash (please refer to the schedule in Appendix A).
Any penalty imposed by the Immigration office for overstay (RM100.00
per month) or other penalties must be borne by the applicant.

2. Candidates who have reached the maximum period of candidature need to


appeal to the Dean/Director of the respective faculty to extend period of
study before applying for an extension to Student Pass.

3. Candidates also need to renew the validity period of their passport before
applying for an extension for the Student Pass.

IV. INFORMATION REGARDING VISA

1. No entry visa is needed for nationals of Commonwealth countries except


for Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nigeria.

2. Nationals from the Republic of Ireland, Switzerland, Netherlands, San


Marino and Liechtenstein do not require entry visa.

3. A visa is required for social/business visit not exceeding three months for
nationals of Albania, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Bosnia
Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Cuba, Czech, Republic, Denmark,
Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Jordan,
Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Norway, Oman, Peru,
Poland, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden,
Slovakia, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkey, Turkmenistan, U.A.E., Uruguay and
Yemen.

4. No entry visa is required for U.S.A. citizens visiting Malaysia for Social,
business or academic purposes (except for local employment).

5. No entry visa is required for social/business visit of not exceeding one


month for nationals of all ASEAN countries, Hong Kong SAR, British
National Overseas (BNO) and North Korea. For a stay exceeding one
month a visa will be required for nationals of Brunei, Singapore and
Vietnam.

6. No entry visa is required for a stay not exceeding 14 days for nationals of
Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Macau (Travel Permit) and Portugal.

7. Nationals of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Taiwan,


Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, People’s Republic of China, Certificate of
Identity (CI) holders, Lesser Passer holders and Titer De Voyage holders
must obtain a visa before entering Malaysia.

8. Nationals of Israel, Yugoslavia, Communist Independent State (CIS) and


People Republic of China are required to apply for a Special Approval
from the Ministry of Home Affairs before entering Malaysia.

9. Other countries that are not listed in any of the categories do not require
visa for social/business visits not exceeding one month.

10. The application process for visa is usually about one month from the day
IPS receives the Student’s documents.

11. Cholera vaccination is not required for travelers entering Malaysia.


Applicants from Yellow Fever Endemic Zones and other affected areas are
required to present International Health Certificates showing Yellow Fever
vaccination. This regulation does not apply to children below the age of
ones.

12. These regulations are subject to changes from time to time.
