9:10 – 9:35 am Discerning Investments Through the Lens of Behavioral Finance

Dr. Hersh Shefrin, named by the American Economic Review (2003) as one of the
top fifteen economic theorists to have influenced empirical work, discusses how
to discern the truth behind marketing and our own biases in interpreting those
messages. For example, people automatically ascribe more weight to information
that confirms our own belief systems. What implications does that have for impact
investors? Professor Shefrin’s latest book Ending the Management Illusion identifies
the psychological factors underlying a wide range of issues such as the global financial
crisis, the cultural weaknesses that led to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010,
and how investors can make their best decisions.

The Time is Now! Partnering with Government for Impact
The future of impact investing will be driven, in part, by the layering of private and
philanthropic capital with public resources. To that end, impact investing is gaining
traction in Washington, as key government actors seek to partner with private
investors, institutions and foundations to achieve mutual domestic and international
policy objectives. This session convenes representatives of select government agencies
to present their impact investing initiatives and to engender collaborative dialogue
with the impact investing community.

Increasing Liquidity & Achieving Impact—A Structuring Conversation
Many investors shy away from impact investments because they believe the
investments are “too different” or the “risk/return” profile is unfavorable. What if we
created a structure that was more familiar to investors so they could immediately see
their downside risk was manageable? Would that result in more capital flowing into the
sector? How does one balance liquidity, security, yield and mission/impact?
