WHAT IS CULTURE?

10 Culture (from the Latin word cultura)
means "to cultivate". It generally refers to
forms of human activity. It includes arts,
beliefs and institutions of a population. These
activities pass from generation to generation.
15Some people also define culture as "the way of
life for an entire society." It includes codes of
manners, dress, language, religion, rituals,
norms of law and morality, systems of belief
and art. People manifest culture in human
20artifacts and activities, for example, music,
literature, lifestyle, food, painting and
sculpture, theater and film.
Various definitions of culture reflect
different theories. The social anthropologist
25Tylor describes culture in the following way:
"Culture or civilization is a complex system
which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals,
law, custom, habits, and other capabilities and
men learn them as members of society."
30 Many people have an idea of culture
from the 18th and early 19th centuries. This
idea is European. It identifies culture with
civilization and contrasts it with nature.
According to this way of thinking, it is possible
35to say that some countries, nations and people
have more civilization and culture. In practice,
culture refers to élite activities –for example, a
visit to an art museum and an appreciation for
classical music – and people who know about
40and take part in these activities. They often
call this idea "high culture", the culture of the
dominant social group, and they distinguish
high culture from mass culture or popular
culture. This view often sees indigenous
45(native) people as 'savages' because they do
not have a complicated and corrupted life with
the capitalist systems of the West.
Today, social scientists reject this
conception of culture and the opposition of
50culture to nature. They believe that non-élites
have culture, too, but in a different way.
The United Educational Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) describes
culture as follows: "... culture is the set of
55spiritual, material, intellectual and emotional
features of society or a social group.”
These definitions reveal a variety of
meanings, but they do not exhaust the many
uses of the term "culture." In Alfred Kroeber
60and Clyde Kluckhohn's book, Culture: A Critical
Review of Concepts and Definitions (1952),
there is a compilation of 164 definitions of
culture.
